Bah why did TERA need to come out so close to diablo 3. I am in a huge dilema to buy tera or d3. Tera is more appealing but it has a monthly subscription sigh

| The two games are not mutually exclusive because quite frankly D3 has limited end game and is a one time purchase. |

Enjoying the game, although PvE is pretty easy so far, as a warrior.
Sucks that VoT is full, would love to play with you guys. Stuck on Feral Valley for now :< |

same here, a trick I use is blink in combination with mounting to get around really fast, specially fun when your blink resets 4 times in a row :D
*blink* *mount* *blink* *blink* *mount* *blink* *blink* *blink* etc
also nice for escaping ganks, even with fast horses they can't catch up to you |

So after being awake for the last 44 hours our attempt to try to get the server first level 60 achievements for lancer and mystic has ended in failure at level 55. Our original plan was to have a lancer, a mystic, and a slayer, but EME decided to fail horribly on their part preventing the slayer from logging into the game for a full 5+hours after the cap had been removed. They required him to set up a subscription payment plan to log in, but before the maintenance he was unable to because the feature on their site was "Coming Soon" and didn't work and after the server maintenance the subscription service was under maintenance for a long time after servers came up.
Obviously we knew we could not wait for him and started right when servers came up. All was smooth sailing through the 40s. As we pulled away from the masses of people who didn't give a fuck about server first (read: intelligent people) we became aware of the small handful of groups putting in the effort. Unfortunately every single one of them had a lancer and mystic. (why do people hate warrior and priest? QQ) Through the 40s we noticed a lot of people struggling as they hit 49. The main issue is that in order to progress through the world's story each section has a level requirement (more below). We somehow managed to slip by 49 without much effort, probably due to repeatable spamming before cap was raised, but soon hit another wall at 52. We were able to surpass this wall by queuing the dungeon finder for the level 48 dungeons and somehow carrying the few DPS who happened to be high enough to randomly try to enter through to the end. Unfortunately this took much longer than hoped and at this point in time a group of 4 players who actually had a balanced setup began to surpass us in terms of level. They were not very far ahead (less than half a level from what we could tell) by the time we were able to move on. From 53 to 55 we resumed our struggle and began to catch up slowly until we hit the wall again. At that point we required 32 million exp to unlock the next quest chain at 56. This number was ridiculously high to try and grind on mobs with only a lancer and mystic, especially with a balanced group of slayer/berserker/lancer/mystic chugging along fine. At this point we decided to give up and finally call it a night. At least we had been server first up to 52? Unfortunately EME in their infinite wisdom has decided to make quest rewards provide the majority of your exp rather than the mobs (the opposite of KTERA as I understand), because a western audience would appreciate that better, apparently. What this led to was the problem that in order to get exp you need to do quests and in order to get quests to do you need to get exp. A beautiful catch 22. Now one may think that BAMs and repeatable quests would solve this issue. While this is generally true it is sadly unrealistic when your focus is on speed. To put it in perspective, when we hit 55 and realized there was no way for us to continue questing we required 32 million exp (10m/42m). Now in a party of 5 people doing a BAM repeatable its not incredibly hard to do somewhere near 400-500k exp per minute, this is all great and fine when you have that many people (the majority of the time), but by our calculations our lancer/mystic combo would have taken ~12 hrs to grind that much exp from a lack of dps. There was no one higher than 48 who could join us for BAM killing because the few people above that were our competition. |

lol thats why its usually just a bad idea to go for an achievement like that. when one of the wow expansions came out(think it was wotlk) we went for something like this too, we actually made it to server firsts on our classes, but just never got any sleep for like 4 days and it was basicly just aoe grinding some instances over and over again.
I always thought it would be better to do these kinda achievements alone though? I guess tera is slower to level individually compared to a group? is doing BAMs and instances faster than questing alone?

The biggest difference is the combat system, which is very action-oriented. Instead of selecting and "locking" to an enemy and just spamming your ability buttons like in WoW (and just about all other MMOs), you actually have to position and aim your attacks to hit the enemy, more similar to games like God of War or Darksiders (but with a lot more timing-related strategy).
I can't say for ranged classes, since I haven't played them yet, but at least melee classes are more fun to play than in any MMO I've played before.Last edit: 2012-05-02 23:27:11 |

You get quite the awesome xp bonus when questing in a group. And they made questing so much faster than just grinding BAMs in EU and NA.

Anyone else think it ridiculous to be able to hit max level in 50 hours? I guess I am accustomed to games like FFXI where it took players about 50 days or so to get their first 75/37 (pre-experience buff) and about 25-30 or so after. To put it in perspective: 1200 hours vice 50.
Games have went from being about the journey and the story to being about the destination. I'll never forget my times in Valkurm Dunes or in the Crawlers Nest or fighting Tucan Sam birds for merits.
Meh, perhaps my MMO days are past. I just do not like the direction the genre is heading in.

You have to question if levelling really is a worthwhile experience, grinding to someone might look like fun questing to the other but the fact still remains that questing in MMOs are mostly a joke in terms of story progression as you are easily spoiled by other players. The 'questing grind' in MMOs are a clear issue and some try to tackle it in different ways, Guild Wars attempts to spice up the questing system by making it more dynamic while other games simply focus on the endgame to make it worthwhile and accelerating the levelling process really does aid that.
I have not seen a truly good story driven MMO and doubt it will ever come simply due to the nature of the Massively Multiplayer Online Genre. |

This is the absolute opposite of my experiences, ganking going on everywhere for me. Stuff like doing quests in the same area as someone else can sometimes set them off to butcher you lol, and GvG wars are fun, because you can contribute whatever level you are whatever you're doing, if you bump into some guy from the enemy while questing or sitting outside an instance you can fuck that guy up. My guild managed to get into wars with 2 of the top 3 sized guilds on the server, had a lot of trouble getting levelling done on sunday hahaLast edit: 2012-05-03 03:54:06 |
