BG2 is one of the best rpgs ever made seriously! I've played over it countless times :D The first time i trully completed it(only a couple of years ago) it took me around ~90 hours with the expansion.
Exploring the whole word, reading every book, spell, item description...so much fun.
The companions are super fun too ;3 I especially liked Jan his constant annoying stories made my other party members angry and me laughing.
As others have pointed, playing a melee class would be the easiest choice, but you should pick the class that suits you best, some fights can be really tough but dont give up!

BG2 is fucking amazing! You will not regret this!
Unless you are a graphic loving FPS maniac who believes Crysis is one of the greatest games ever made, I see no reason why you won't like it.

MOD MOD MOD, it will make the experience much better and solve a lot of bugs. Also don't skip BG1 plz ( you can play BG1 with BG2 engine ! )
If you are not a computer illiterate it shouldn't be too hard to mod the game ( ~ 1 hour of instal )

Quoting/editing a recent PM to a friend In bold -> important mods/patches. DONT INSTALL SCS I & II if it is your first game because it becomes way more difficult.Ascension makes things more difficult too but it is only for the very end of the game. You can skip Oversight and aTweaks they are really not important. Same for Bigger fonts if you don't use a huge resolution or if you have good eyes ( i don't have it in my screenshot ) Install+modding will probably take you less than one hour if you are not a computer illiterate.

If you are going to install SCS I reccomend going through and carefully picking through the options. Some of them make the game a lot more tedious in addition to increasing the difficulty. It's been awhile since I have played BGII, but I think all the AI improvements are worth it, but some of the encounter improvements are annoying, demons get REALLY tedious to fight with some of their improvement components installed.

Ok, this is going to be a long one
1 Don't make a character that has 3 int, it will burn you.
2 You get good exp for picking locks and disarming traps
3 Druids level up very very very slowly
4 The best weapons are swords
5 Two weapon wielding > two handed weapons > sword and shield > bows > slings
6 Inquisitor is the best Paladin Kit.
7 Blade is the only good bard kit (and even then you need to know how to abuse)
8 If you reload enough you can kill anything (almost) with a kill spell or skill

I'll add to this. Make sure you get a +1 attacks per round sword and keep it in your offhand if you intend to dual wield. I believe you get at least two throughout the entire game, one of them coming from a long and fairly well hidden sub-quest, but if you can find it, keep it, as it is the best off-hand weapon in the game. I think the other is only usable by monks and and very high level thieves so it's a bit more limited in utility.

Blades are so much fun. If you pick the right spells and use their defensive spin they become pretty much invulnerable in melee combat. |

Thank you guys for your encouragement. I consider myself a very experience gamers. I play almost every genre of games. Rts,rpg,jprg,fps..etc..
I've also played Neverwinter Night, Dragon Age...so I think I can dive into BGII quite natually.
But now,after reading this thread, I fear that I lost the right of brag about my gaming experience since I never play BGII.
Luckily, I got a two weeks of holiday coming, though I have to share my time between SC2,Civ 5 and BGII, but Im definately give this a go today.

The most powerful class you can make is a Kensai/Mage Dual class with dual wielding. Start as a Kensai, switch class to mage at level 9. You can actually solo BG II with that class.
If you are not a paladin, take Keldron the Inquisitor with you. You will bump into him eventually. There is a sweet 2h sword in the game that only a paladin can use. Hint: Do you like dragon? I like dragon.
Don't play as a woman, play as a guy. The romance options for male in this game are amongst the best ever written, way way better than Dragon Age.Last edit: 2010-09-20 10:29:08 |

| I forget, is it possible to solo the game as a trap thief? I know you can kill most stuff if you just take forever to set up traps but I can't remember if it was actually possible to do it for everything. |
