Man just reinstalled the game, it's been like 10 years...
Was really hesitant to start with bg1 again, but the tutu mod totally makes it go from ''ok, but not sure if want'' to ''awesome bg2 engine!''
Ah how I miss the 2d proper rpgs, wish bioware would dump all the 3d gimmick and revert to the good old days and focus on gameplay instead of graphics and cutscenes. |

I have played through BG1+2 tons of times, especially 2, but never ToB because both enemies and your characters become really overpowered at later levels, making it less exciting as you spend much more time just pausing and "solving" the battles.
But I would def. recommend playing bg2 if you like the genre. Lots of fun NPCs to have in your party (I'd recommend Edwin, Korgan, Jan Jansen, Viconia, Haer'Dalis and maybe Valygar but really, most of them are entertaining)
The game is easy enough that you can play any class and basically have any type of setup, that is unless you plan to tackle the harder (non-compulsory) fights. Archer, Kensai dualled to Mage or Thief, Sorcerer are all somewhat overpowered classes. One thing to take in notion is the class-specific quests, and regarding those, I'd say the bard has the most entertaining one
Also, this might have been mentioned but, there is a mod to play bg1 through the bg2 engine, which I definitely recommend. I'd say the story in bg1 is better but after playing bg2 It's quite annoying to go back to the bg1 engine so... best of both worlds by doing this |

i really recommand you the following mods:
BGTrilogy Ascension Solaufein Don't bother with any other till you have completed the game, they will mess up your first experience.
They will make the game way better. Now my advice is to spend time to try all the spells you can. Better you know the spell repertoire, better you'll enjoy the game. Take a lot of casters, and make your mind on every single spell. Don't underestimate multiclass: a warrior mage under stoneskin and mirror image is a better tank than a 150hp dwarf warrior, and a cleric mage is a spell factory which can be useful later in the game.
I recommand you the best (and most broken) class in the game: cleric ranger, which can use both priest and druid spells and will also be a fantastic warrior.
Enjoy the best rpg ever. |

baulders gate 1 is the best RPG ever made, period..but shadows of amn wasnt far behind...i miss the days that companies took pride in their work and added nuances that generation Y gamers dont get to experience..seriously in BG 1 i went off the map in uncharted wilderness and found a talking bunny rabbit named fred, then i got him a cure and it turned out to demon who wanted my D at first then tried to kill me and i found a note on the body that directed me to a little house in tradewind where the family was dead...
comparing dragon age isnt realistic, all RPGs in this era are super linear..some games have poked through the drivle like Bethesda games but Bioware back in the day was easily the gaming company for RPGs..ever. |

i love baldur's gate <3 <3 !! I did found bg 1 better then bg 2. The first game gave me much more a feeling of freedom and i was able to discover the world, visting unknown places. In bg2 you get flooded by sidequests which confused me where to start. It seemed like every time i visited a new place at athakla 4 or 5 people would come begging to me asking if i could save X person, Y village or solve Z plot.
My tip: take things slowly and keep good track of what quests you have. Dont visit all the regions of the city at once or you'll be buried beneath side quests.Last edit: 2010-09-20 22:48:33 |

The sense of exploration was amazing in BG1, the main quest pointed you in the general direction but gave you huge freedom to explore and see what's out there. It seemed like every map had a purpose or cool quest, every time you went off the beaten track to explore a bit or try something different you're rewarded.

This... although, I have tried playing Torment about 50 times, and never made it past a couple hours. It's like I know it would pay off but I never have the gumption to keep on with its horrendous graphics and reading requirement. |

What a coincidence, I installed BG2 + some ThreeGibberling mod two days ago.
Playing it through with a Kensai/Mage and Ranger/Cleric. Possible the most imba duo there is.
Good times. |

What mod is this? Just seeing the screenshots (and in wonderful hi-res!) makes me want to replay the game. Does this mod (or a comparable one) work on Vista? |

From my experience it does work on Vista. Playing the game on Vista was a tad choppy, but I believe that had to do with an unrelated issue. |

I cannot agree more with this. While I do consider SoA to have a better storyline. The exploration of BG1 easily made up for it. Think I've played it around 10 times and I know I haven't discovered everything yet. So few games have a decent exploration aspect these days. Also the humor I have encountered in these games are far beyond everything else except portal (and probably torment which I haven't played yet but definitely will if I can get that widescreen mod to work ) |

So, I download the game, install it, add the Trilogy addon, etc etc etc. Making my character I roll 14,14,14,14,14,17 in that order as a Kensai, move some points around to get Str up to 18, and it randomizes 18/99. Then my game crashes when I alt tab to reply to my girlfriend on gtalk. Spent the last hour trying to recreate anything close to that >.< |

HAHAHAHA
i've spent countless hours rolling the "dices" over and over to get a decent character. With some practice you'll even know how to judge a character sheet in 1s... (and you get mad just because you're hearing the same music over and over again)Last edit: 2010-09-21 02:24:12 |

The music is awesome though so it's ok. Stat rolling is part of why I like playing a mage. Who needs constitution/dexterity if you have spells that ensure you will never be hit? I go for mediocre strength (to prevent encumbrance + to have chance at that wolf outside candlekeep) intelligence (obvious reasons) and wisdom (for wish.) Everything else goes to charisma for RP reasons, because I don't like having to wear the ring of human influence. Usually takes me only a few re-rolls to get favorable stats.
