What is this thread?
This thread lists all the mafia games concurrently happening on TL, as well as games that will be starting once the current ones are finished. Up above, you will find the list of ongoing games, as well as the queue for upcoming games.

Why does this thread exist?
A lot of people want to play mafia, and a lot of people want to host. This system helps to keep mafia games flowing at a steady pace, while allowing everyone to get a chance at hosting. Our system is not perfect, and we realize that. If you have ideas on how to improve what we have (either by a small change or a total revamp) please do not hesitate to post in this thread or PM me.

How does this affect me as a host?
TL Mafia prides itself on having a variety of hosts who are willing to dedicate countless hours to ensuring that others have a fun experience. That said, hosting is not for everyone, and there are many long-time members who have never hosted. If you would like to become a host, you must first cohost a game (but preferably more). The best way to prove that you will be a good host for our community is by cohosting. Furthermore, you must have played in 5 games on TL Mafia.

Once the above criterion has been met, you must send me a PM summarizing why you should be allowed to host (along with your 5 games that you have played in). This is not a college essay and I'm not expecting anything detailed, just a paragraph or two explaining what you would bring to the table as a host.

All games must have a cohost! Having 2 people hosting a game ensures that the game is run on time and in a proper fashion. Rules about cohosting are as follows:

1) If you have never hosted a game on TL Mafia before you must start by cohosting with a trusted host before you may host your own game (see above for a further explanation). Hosting games on other forums or in real life do not qualify.

2) Once you have found a cohost, either PM me or post in the thread who your cohost is. I reserve the right to deny you a cohost.

About balancing your game:
All games must be balanced to ensure that people have fun while playing. Nothing sucks worse to lose a game only to find out your chance of winning was next to nil from the start. Please note that TL Mafia may be different from other forum mafia sites, and some setups that work on other sites may not be appropriate here. If you are hosting a game you must get the setup approved by one of the following members before starting your game:

Foolishness, GMarshal, GreyMist

People on this list may refuse to look at your game for whatever reason (i.e. they are too busy with life). This is a volunteer job so please be understanding.

If you are an experienced host or player you may 'petition' to include yourself on this list. You must have at least 2 games of hosting experience and several games of playing experience to be considered to be on this list. Send me a PM if you wish to be on the list.

Rules about hosting:
Please consult this thread for rules about hosting. These rules are established to ensure that our mafia games are run in a fair manner. If you break these rules too many times I will deny you hosting privileges. If you played in a game recently where a host violated one of these rules or did some other misdeed, please PM me and let me know.

Newbie Games:
Here on TL Mafia, we attempt to constantly run Newbie Games. These games may only have players who have played in three games or less on TL Mafia. This is designed to help ease players into our forum and get the feel of games before jumping in with the advanced and long-time players.

The Newbie Game queue is managed by kitaman27. He is in charge of finding hosts and ensuring that the Newbie Games are put up in a timely and orderly fashion. If you have questions about the Newbie Game queue or would like to host a Newbie Game, please send him a PM.

How does this affect me as a player?
Check this thread to see what games are accepting signups and thus are available for you to join! You can also see the expected times for the current games to end. Inactivity is a problem for TL mafia games, so this will help you estimate when games are starting and ending. Don't play in a game if you know you can't commit!

What this thread is not:
1) This is not a discussion about if it's okay for people to be playing multiple games at once.
It's up to the hosts if they want to stop that from happening, not me. A host may deny you entry into their game if you are already playing in another. As a reminder, here is the general thought about it:

*Note: If you take a normal setup and rename all the roles for flavor this is still a normal game.

Wow this seems like a lot of annoying work. Why have you decided to do this?
The old members of our community have always talked of starting a thread like this. Having some organized system for hosting games gives more people the opportunity to host, as well as making it easier for new members to join and become acquainted with what's happening on this forum. Because I am a full time graduate student and working three jobs, taking up this responsibility is my way of contributing to this community since I am generally too busy to be playing mafia.

Unnamed is Pokemafia (around 30 players: no PMs plus third party SK). I'm willing to wait for another boot camp game to start and finish(2 theme games in a row with harry potter is kinda bleh). Although because it will be a fairly typical game the boot camp analysers can feel free to help out with post-game analysis.

General guidelines about the hosting queue:
Since everyone has wanted to hosted at some point, and there might be multiple people hosting at once, I have devised a formula to figure out who gets priority on hosting. Why is this so? I think we can all agree we'd rather play a game hosted by Incognito, Qatol, or Chuiu, than one hosted by Bill Murray or Showtime!.

How will this work? Each time you host a game, you get a certain number of points. The more points you have the higher on the ranking of hosts you are. If two people want to host and we have to pick one, the one on the higher ranking gets to go first. The other person will be next up, regardless if another person comes in. This is to ensure that new hosts aren't waiting forever.

After getting a few opinions, I have decided to establish this system. However I feel like it's far from perfect. As stated, we need some way to moderate who gets priority when hosting games, since we never want to play a game hosted by Bill Murray. Thus I arbitrarily created this as a starting point for something more precise. I need some thoughts and opinions about this; is it a good idea, should I revamp the whole system, add a few things?

Let me make clear that I don't want to discourage hosting as much as possible. Having a load of good hosts is a wonderful benefit to this community. But when push comes to shove we need something to make the decision.

As a note, given the current state I do not find it likely to ever have to use this. It's more of a long term thing since this community is growing. As it might become a problem someday, I want to establish is now instead of fighting about it later (although I'm sure there will still be fights about it later).

I think there should be some way for people to get at least temporary priority points based on how long they are waiting. And I think it might be too strong to say we never want to play in a game hosted by Bill Murray. Though I would definitely rather play in a game hosted by someone like Chuiu.

this point system is a pretty bad idea

why do you value normal games over theme? theme take MUCH more effort, in balance, flavor, etc.

why even have a point priority system? first come first serve, imo. whoever declares their intent first gets in the queue.

common decency should be more than enough. if we establish a firm limit of 1 normal 1 theme 1 mini at any given time, people should be able to wait out the active game before starting the other. even if i fill HP mafia, i wait until salem ends before starting.

Why shouldn't we value normal over theme? It seems like everyone has their pet theme game they want to run. Notice how many theme games there have been recently. Compare to the number of normal games. Heck, even the 2 most recent normal games didn't exactly work out that way. Insane was somewhere between a normal game and a theme game. And Salem was planned to be a theme game originally and then converted into a normal game. Besides, normal games are more educational and are actually mafia. Games like Sengoku aren't even really the same game.

What do you consider the difference between a normal game and a theme game?

I would consider Salem a normal game even though it has a "theme" being the Witch Hunt. Pokemafia will not have an incredibly unusual/abberant set-up but it has strong flavor. Does this count as a theme game rather than a normal game?

I guess I would say a theme game must have some sort of specific mechanic/role types that do not occur in normal mafia games. By that logic Haunted was a normal game but 2 family games are not typical so I wouldn't consider it a normal game by any means.

I'm assuming that is what you mean by theme (sengoku, insane, haunted, etc.)

I personally think that a game with semi-standard roles and whatnot is a normal game. So I feel like haunted was a normal game. Theme games are generally centered around a specific gimmick. So something like the map from Sengoku or the nukes from WAW. I feel like a game should be considered normal if it is popular/balanced enough to interest people several times, so PYP or Haunted might become a normal game (it was at least the 4th time we have used 2+ mafia families). I don't know though it is really hard to draw lines, and I definitely feel like my definitions could use improvement.

Note (Qatol and DH): The discussion for the definition of normal/themed games goes in the expanding the player base thread, not here (as per Foolishness's request).

On the issue of the points system: I don't see how this is necessary or beneficial. I get the point that we'd prefer a game hosted by Qatol than BM, but those are extreme cases. I don't see a reason to favor DH over Artanis or Coag over Hesmyrr or whatnot. As long as the host acts within reasonable standards of behavior, it should be first come first served. If we have hosts who present themselves as abnormal cases, we can deal with that on an individual basis. Having a point system seems arbitrary and pointless.

I agree actually. I think the system should be a mix of first come serve with bootcamp/normal games being prioritized.

And have we agreed to a system such as:
1 normal
1 themed
2 mini

or something of that nature? as far as what games can overlap, or are we just going to leave it up to mod discretion whether they will allow people to be in two games at once?

Like I said, the "mod priority" debacle could also be resolved by simply taking a hint from Mafiascum, though I can see it can have problem of stretching what are already thin player availability, especially if we are going to carry on with no multiple signups rule.

Edit: Also Foolishness seems to be giving me priority to mini setup over DoctorHelvetica due to amount of games he recently hosted, but holding back for moment since I am not sure if Foolishness conferred with DrH before making this decision.

Of course it's going to be a first come first serve basis, but in the event there's an issue we need something to determine what's what. As I said before, I don't foresee this ever really being used anytime in the near future. I'm accounting for the long run growth of this forum. If we get to the point where we have multiple games running at once (say 2 normal, 2 themed, and 3-4 mini), simply because our forum keeps growing, then we need something to help satisfy disputes. If we have a growth of players, we're surely going to have a lot of people who will want to host.

Another point of this list would be so that new people can see who has the most hosting experience when they are deciding to join games or host/cohost themselves.

Remember, I don't think it's ever going to be needed until our player base grows. I'm establishing this now so because it's much easier to agree on a system now that when that happens. It's still going to be first come first serve.

I'm also good with DrH's proposed system of 1 normal, 1 themed, and 2 mini mafia games. I think however, we should limit ourselves to only 1 mini game having sign ups at any given time. So for example, Hesmyrr has opened up his game. Once his signups are filled up, DrH is free to make his mini game and start it whenever (even if Hesmyrr's is still ongoing).

And yes Hesmyrr, I asked DrH if he'd be okay with waiting to host his mini game since he has dibs on the next Normal game.
