I'm certain I'm not the only one that is curious about this recent event.
For those that don't know, at the start of the new GSL season Tastosis made an announcement that Tasteless is no longer observing GSL games, and there has been an entirely new observer hired to fill that role. The new (presumably Korean speaking) observer is not on camera, and the extent to which Tastosis can interact with the observer is unknown.
I happen to be not a fan of this switch at all. While I appreciate all the smooth movements of the new observer and how easy on the eyes it is to watch (especially from a new players POV) I find that the lack of coordination between what we are seeing and what we're hearing takes away from the experience in total. There was a scenario just now where: + Show Spoiler +a banshee from PoltPrime got a TON of SCV kills, and Tasteless and Artosis were beckoning "please click on Banshee!" because they wanted to see the number of kills, but were obviously unable to get that.
This is a thread to anyone that has any real information on this, or the (perhaps?) disappearance of John to let the rest of us know
EDIT: John is still here! Hooray!

This is really a big loss for the foreign commentating... Tasteless needs control of the camera.
|
I think it makes sense to have an in-game cameraman and let tasteless + artosis watch the game on their own client (three sets of eyes on the game = you're not gonna miss much) but from the sounds of things tasteless and artosis don't even have computers at their casting booth :/
I'll agree that I'm not much of a fan of the current setup, but it has potential.
Also, no john? D:!!!!!!!!!

It's a small sacrifice to not have that communication. Immediately I am able to hear that tasteless is doing much better at casting just because he doesn't have multitask like he did before. A full time observer is going to be, overall, a good thing, even if we have to miss out on small things like not seeing the number of kills on that banshee. We can extrapolate from what we see on the screen that it was "a fuckton". An exact number isn't too relevant.

Do you have a source for this? I dont remember hearing this in any of the casts. This is too bad if its true.

they said it on gsl right now

Its true, I just saw it. They said that tomorrow they will have a second comp to observe with or something. Btw, did anyone just see "coming up 5rd match" XD
|
It's the first day, give it some time.
Koreans do it this way and it honestly is better as it frees up the caster from focusing on obsing as well as commentating.
|
Artosis did say that he will be a secondary observer, hopefully his observing will smooth over some of the problems.
I will hold my criticism for now given that this is the first time there is a dedicated observer and hopefully he will improve as he goes. It seems that the relationship between Tastosis and the observer will develop and grow and hopefully it will get better as we go on.
|
I'm not a big fan either but love it all either way.
|
I actually prefer it this way and from watching BW all these years it definitely works. It'll take some time for the observer to be great and Tasteless to get used to it but with Artosis getting the 2nd computer tomorrow he'll be back to normal.
|
I feel like it all could work quote well, but the likely language barrier between observer/commentator makes things feel too disjointed.
I do agree though, it seems like Tastless's commentary is SO much better with him not obsing. Bravo for that!
|
Well obviously it's better having tasteless on camera, cause now you miss some of the action. In neastea game he just looked at flying mutas for like 5mins and nothing more =/

ya, if Tastosis had their own computers + a 3rd position watching the "main" action.
|
Apparently Tastosis are getting their own computers tomorrow.

Tasteless just mentioned that it was both Tasteless' and GOMTV's opinion that doing the observing AND commentating was more than one human (or Protoss, lolz) to handle, so they changed it up.

Didn't the Korean Commentators have the the same kind of format? I think that after awhile everyone will get used to it, including Tastosis. Just need to improve on their coordination skills.
|
It is a lot smoother with Tasteless not obsing i will say that. I don't anticipate this being a huge issue.
|
Why don't they have Tasteless set his cam to follow an observer but then let him break out when he wants? The SC2 observer mode already has this made...
|
Koreans have been doing this for 10 years and it´s a lot smoother.
