Hello TL
I'm in high school atm i play football, and recently i've been self conscious about being such a nerd. I was just curious to hear TL.net's storys about being a nerdy in high school assuming you are. What kind of friends did you have? What was your HS like? I have problems with friends and im a little shy. I usually just sit on my with my friends and we each make a program for e/o then hack it. I love sc2 master league atm and uh, yeah what was HS like 4 u? |

Yeah I moved from Shanghai to Orange County.
I had to suffer through the, "WTF why don't you have an accent? and WTF why is your English so good?" When they found out I was in Spanish 2 as well, they pretty much fainted.
But really I just missed my friends. And my (ex)girlfriend. |

moved around 4 different schools in 2 different countries. Never really "belonged" to a posse in school but I was pretty cool with every different group, got into a couple of fights here and there so that bullies wouldnt pester me any more.
For the most part high school was ok, played lots of sport but i hated the whole "group" atmosphere where people would all follow some douche leader and all the bullshit politics. Good thing that school has finished :D Uni is much more fun. heh |

| my highschool experience was really baller... i was never mister popular or mister jock but i live in New Hampshire (far northeast usa) where it's a pretty homogenous group of people... only the emo kids had a "cliche" so it was a really strong community of like 1600 kids... not super ritzy high school or anything just pretty friendly area |

My experience was great. I had poor grades but mostly because i slacked off and smoked too much pot. I played football and basketball for 2 years. I was friends with almost everyone I knew. I lived in a small town and i was the only person in my school that could program afaik. I was known for gaming a lot. I hung out with the "stoners" i guess you could say. I had 4 really good friends and i'm still friends with them to this day. We got into a lot of trouble around town. I got messed up in the wrong crowd for a bit but then my good friends steered me away and we went back to smoking pot and causing trouble, but at least it wasn't what the other guys did. I got cocky for a bit because I was getting in so much shit without getting caught and it bit me in the ass. I got caught with some of weed at school in my junior year. Luckily for me the juvenile court lady was nice and I didn't get anything on my record as long as I stayed out of trouble for 6 months (kind of like probation but it wasn't recorded anywhere). The charges were dropped and i was suspended for 2 weeks. Overall I had fun during my high school years and i don't regret anything, I learned good lessons and had good experiences. Sorry for my rambling but i'm too tired to write any better . |

I was a skateboarder/metal/punk/nerd guy so I had friends in a lot of groups. I was an open nerd, but not to the point where I talked to people about video games in front of non gamers.
A lot of the nerds i was friends with called me a closet nerd because of this though. |

I hung out with the skater kids mostly, a bunch of them I knew from before high school as well. I was pretty much friendly with everyone though, my high school was kind of cliquey but I tried to spend time with other groups of people so I was pretty well liked by most. My close friends and I basically just skateboarded and smoked pot a lot, went to parties on weekends. I actually had a lot more fun in high school than I am in college, mostly because there are no girls in my computer science classes and it's harder to meet people than it used to be.
I never really had any super nerdy friends like myself, so my gaming has always been done with people I met online other than like console games and stuff. My grades were always very good but I didn't brag about them so that didn't turn anyone off and I never tried to hide that I was a nerdy guy and a pretty hardcore gamer. Even though it seems like people would make fun of you for being a nerd I never found that to be the case, people don't actually care what you enjoy doing as long as you're not a dick.Last edit: 2011-02-09 12:49:21 |

Wish I had gotten the help I needed to make more out of my high school experience. Had some bad anxiety, so I skipped just about every other day, and kept to myself a fair amount. Despite that though, met some great people, teachers were awesome and I DID enjoy it when I was there. Would've been great if I had stuck with it, though!
And I was part of the tech crew, lights. So there you go. |

Idk if you're looking for advice or just asking, sooooo I'll try and give you some advice =]
Graduated in 2008 btw.
You haven't said anything about being desperate to fit it (keep it that way), so it sounds like you're kind of going through what I went through in HS, in that you aren't quite sure where you fit in/where you want to fit in. The absolute best thing I can say to you is NEVER let your friends down for the sake of any group. You'll only regret it and more than likely lose a great friend. I was lucky enough to learn early on that the group of people I surrounded myself with was amazing (and very small).
I wrestled, and was one of the better/more well known athletes in my school of ~2000, so in that sense, I was 'popular', but I never let it bother me if I didn't get invited to some party, or if I didn't constantly have people texting me, and I really think thats important. My little circle of friends still stays in touch, and my best friend from HS is my roommate now, so its all good.
That said, shy or not, don't be afraid to speak up. If you have a question, ask it. If you think something your classmate said is dumb, tell them (if you can back up your statement). Soon you'll notice people asking you things, you'll become a bit of a leader. This definitely holds true as a football player, play smart, be smart, guys start looking to you for answers.
In closing, to be completely honest, senior year is fun, but college gets amazing, so just wait for that =]
So not sure if thats what you were looking for, but there =]

What kind of friends did you have? Same friends I had since middle school, we were labeled as skaters / hip hop heads. but I didn't really care.
What was your HS like? I went to quite a few, all of them pretty lame and same shit everywhere basically.
Spent a lot of time fucking around and getting into trouble and not going (and finding drugs/alcohol). Wasn't really concerned with grades or making new friends or finding girls to date there. I already had friends and knew girls to hang out with.
Always played games like my whole life, some of my friends played as well (and still do). Playing SNES, PS1, N64, PC LAN, MTG, Overpower, Arcades, Gameboy, etc.
HS was a joke, I actually graduated a year early even though I was like one of the worst students. The reason why, is because the system is bad. Half the shit they taught every year was just the same shit the already taught in previous years. I swear we learned about simple machines every fucking year in science. When looking back, I realize I probably was an outsider, cause all my life I have been a geek. However, at the time I felt pretty good about my life. I was nerdy yes, didn't party and such, but I still felt I really fit in. Probably cause I never was that interested in being "one of the cool kids", they all seemed kind of shallow and they only cared about stuff I couldn't care less about. I was in a rather tight group of friends, we shared the same interests and had good times with sports and computers. We also got along with the other groups, so yea, when I think about it was all good, which kind of surprise me now, when I look back.
I would advice anyone in highschool, to try to not care too much about what others think, and not always try to fit in. Highschool is over so fast, and when you move on to university etc it normally gets easier to connect with people you study with. Mostly because everyone chose their own path. Either way, good luck too all you current highschoolers, try to enjoy it as good as you can, I kind of envy you!

High school was a necessary evil for me. School is so much bullshit that I never wanted to be involved with it, but I realized I had to do decent or else life afterward would be very difficult. So I basically did the littlest work possible to get a B and spent the rest of my time sleeping(I went to a public school where most teachers were glad it was one less student to cause trouble) or in PE classes playing basketball.

I'm asian so normally its easy for me to take pride in my nerdy/geeky (still need to find out the difference), I hung with a good group of diverse fellow. Smoked weed here and there. I liked to hang out with the really smart Asian groups, my stoner friends, cousins, played lots of halo and DOTA, and ME1 and ME2...just got into SC2 senior year...and i'm fucking in love.
Played a shitload of basketball, that's all i do when its good weather out, seriously SC2 is good, but when it's sunny out, all basketball for me...unless all my friends are chilling on BNET and fucking around.

Friends:
I had an eclectic group of friends, most of them went on to universities studying various things ranging from liberal arts to maths/engineering.
I also had friends who went to community colleges, or simply worked at entry level jobs. I also have one close friend who did an apprenticeship after HS and eventually became a machinist.
Overall experience:
Really good, grade 11 and 12 were particularly awesome. I had friends to play chess, and discuss maths and computer stuff (my interests at the time), and I also had friends to hang out and go drinking on weekends (small intersection). |

High school seemed kind of cool at the time. I mean in terms of other students, I got along and liked most people. I'd say overall, I had a good high school experience.
But now when I look back 2 1/2 years later, it just seemed.. stupid. I think you'll be surprised with how unimportant high school will feel just even 6 months after. Most of the cliches you hear about high school really are true. It really is just a bunch of immature and insecure kids constantly worrying about what others think of them.
It's tough to view it that way while you're still in it so its not always that helpful to be told that. But hopefully you can at least be comforted with the knowledge that after high school, you'll probably be way less "self conscious of being such a nerd" because most of the world really doesn't care. |

Social side fine. School side Administration (principle, vice principle subject arrangement etc) I hope they rot slowly in hell.
Teachers, most of them I like, they were good teachers alot of them let us insult each other (win!) no holds bar. I only want something bad to happen to 2 or 3 of them. |

Pretty much qft.
Personally I loved certain aspects of HS and miss them; whilst I don't miss others.
Probably to my demise, I played WoW and quit in Gr.12 (year ago). Never really talked about games with friends because of the above quote really.
I felt as If I was caught in between two personalities as such. On one hand, I played WoW etc, and on the other, I was pretty into sport. Played in Div 1 Team for Hockey for my city for around 3 years until I gave up hockey for squash.
I miss P.E class; and definitely don't miss English class
Overall, HS was alright.
