Do you guys like Korean movies? Over the last two years, the Korean movie industry grew extremely big. Hundreds of multiplexes and cinemas, which weren't common, sprang up here and there and going to watch a movie is probably now the number 1 thing to do on dates and when meeting friends. Just yesterday I read an article in an English paper talking about the Korean movie "OldBoy." It gave a wonderful review and I really would like to reccomend to you guys to go watch that movie. It is very good. Not only the size of the industry but also the quality of the movies in Korea increased a lot. A great number of our movies are going out to movie festivals and winning a lot of stuff. Just to highlight a few big awards, "Oldboy" got the grand prize for 2004 Cannes(?) Film Festival and "Samaria" got director award for the same festival. So I wanted to introduce you guys to three movies from Korea that are receiving universal approval and reccomend that you guys take time to watch them because it is really fun Also I'm curious if any of you actually watched Korean movies and what you think about them.

A review on English paper about Oldboy. It just talks about how great Oldboy is, receiving 5 stars, and how it is superior compared to Tarantino and his movie KillBill. I love the last line which says "Shove over, Tarantino, a new master's in town!"

The movie "Memory of Murder" which literally sweeped the Korean movie awards in 2003. It is based on a true story that happened 20~30 years ago in Korea. Its about this crazy killer who rapes/kills women who wear red clothes on rainy nights. He leaves no trace whatsoever so until today the people in Korea call it the murder by the Martians.

Also a great great film called "Flying the Taeguki" Taeguki is the Korean flag. This movie is about two brothers fighting in opposite sides on during the Korean war. I think its a great war movie and is up there with the best war movies in movie history. (PERSONAL OPINION)

These were just three of the many movies in Korea that are really good. If you have a chance, go watch them. You won't regret it.^^

I saw OldBoy recently very cool movie with a suprising twist in the end when the plot is revealed.
But also very strong violence in some parts.

I've seen Old Boy about 3 times now. It's so darn fun to watch. And it's funny to see the expressions on your friend's face when you show it to them (there's a lot of stomach churning scenes).

oh god, Ive shown Old boy to all my friends as well, its an amazing movie ^^

A classic that I always liked is: Attack on the Gas Station (Gas Station Attack Incident?) I believe it won some international awards as well.

korean cinema is spearheading a revolution in asian cinema in general. it's not just the art films like oldboy; popular korean cinema like shiri, attack on the gas station, and my sassy girl, show that dealing with convention doesn't have to mean creating an hour and a half of vacuous screen-wasting shit, as hollywood seems to do. wong kar-wai, zhang yimou, et al, are doing their part for china, and in japan there are auteurs like takeshi kitano working their magic against the japanese mass market films, which tend to be just as ridiculous as the formulaic movies churned out in the united states.

The only movie I've ever cried in was My Sassy Girl. Mostly for personal reasons but also because that movie just touched me. Sounds emotional but I've never felt like that watching any other move in my life.

Kmovies own ^^ I made a topic about it waaaaaay back when I was about to leave for Korea [ or was it after - _-v ]

Anyway, great topic.

takeshi kitano is the man, I recently saw Post Man Blues, and Monday, both great movies. People keep telling me to watch Drive, which is next on my list.

they are doing a hollywood remake of my sassy girl. director previously did 'bend it like beckham'.
windstruck ( same director and actress from my sassy girl ) sucked so bad tho.
one of the few movies i actually stopped watching halfway through.

some other korean movies ive seen that are good were chingu(gangster flick) and christmas in august and the way home.

i am mostly a fan of boy/girl romance/comedy movie.. but i also thought that the fast pace tae guk gi was good ^^. Hm, oldboy and chin goo was pretty odd for me because I normally do not enjoy those kind of movies (but i see it's directing and acting was really talented..jang dong gun ~~). My sassy girl is obviously on everyone's favorite list, I also rank Classic up there with it. Also, anyone see si sil ri 2km (시실리2km)? I found that pretty funny kaka

good movies in other countries are the exception and not the norm just like in the united states. theres less vacous screen wasting shit only because they are making less movies in total.
