Korean Movies Anyone?

Do you guys like Korean movies? Over the last two years, the Korean movie industry grew extremely big. Hundreds of multiplexes and cinemas, which weren't common, sprang up here and there and going to watch a movie is probably now the number 1 thing to do on dates and when meeting friends. Just yesterday I read an article in an English paper talking about the Korean movie "OldBoy." It gave a wonderful review and I really would like to reccomend to you guys to go watch that movie. It is very good. Not only the size of the industry but also the quality of the movies in Korea increased a lot. A great number of our movies are going out to movie festivals and winning a lot of stuff. Just to highlight a few big awards, "Oldboy" got the grand prize for 2004 Cannes(?) Film Festival and "Samaria" got director award for the same festival. So I wanted to introduce you guys to three movies from Korea that are receiving universal approval and reccomend that you guys take time to watch them because it is really fun Also I'm curious if any of you actually watched Korean movies and what you think about them.

A review on English paper about Oldboy. It just talks about how great Oldboy is, receiving 5 stars, and how it is superior compared to Tarantino and his movie KillBill. I love the last line which says "Shove over, Tarantino, a new master's in town!"

The movie "Memory of Murder" which literally sweeped the Korean movie awards in 2003. It is based on a true story that happened 20~30 years ago in Korea. Its about this crazy killer who rapes/kills women who wear red clothes on rainy nights. He leaves no trace whatsoever so until today the people in Korea call it the murder by the Martians.

Also a great great film called "Flying the Taeguki" Taeguki is the Korean flag. This movie is about two brothers fighting in opposite sides on during the Korean war. I think its a great war movie and is up there with the best war movies in movie history. (PERSONAL OPINION)

These were just three of the many movies in Korea that are really good. If you have a chance, go watch them. You won't regret it.^^

I've seen Old Boy about 3 times now. It's so darn fun to watch. And it's funny to see the expressions on your friend's face when you show it to them (there's a lot of stomach churning scenes).

oh god, Ive shown Old boy to all my friends as well, its an amazing movie ^^

A classic that I always liked is: Attack on the Gas Station (Gas Station Attack Incident?) I believe it won some international awards as well.

korean cinema is spearheading a revolution in asian cinema in general. it's not just the art films like oldboy; popular korean cinema like shiri, attack on the gas station, and my sassy girl, show that dealing with convention doesn't have to mean creating an hour and a half of vacuous screen-wasting shit, as hollywood seems to do. wong kar-wai, zhang yimou, et al, are doing their part for china, and in japan there are auteurs like takeshi kitano working their magic against the japanese mass market films, which tend to be just as ridiculous as the formulaic movies churned out in the united states.

The only movie I've ever cried in was My Sassy Girl. Mostly for personal reasons but also because that movie just touched me. Sounds emotional but I've never felt like that watching any other move in my life.

Kmovies own ^^ I made a topic about it waaaaaay back when I was about to leave for Korea [ or was it after - _-v ]

Anyway, great topic.

windstruck ( same director and actress from my sassy girl ) sucked so bad tho.
one of the few movies i actually stopped watching halfway through.

some other korean movies ive seen that are good were chingu(gangster flick) and christmas in august and the way home.

i am mostly a fan of boy/girl romance/comedy movie.. but i also thought that the fast pace tae guk gi was good ^^. Hm, oldboy and chin goo was pretty odd for me because I normally do not enjoy those kind of movies (but i see it's directing and acting was really talented..jang dong gun ~~). My sassy girl is obviously on everyone's favorite list, I also rank Classic up there with it. Also, anyone see si sil ri 2km (시실리2km)? I found that pretty funny kaka

i am speaking specifically about asian cinema, and i acknowledged that about japan; i don't know enough about china's cinema to make a statement, but as for korea, every korean movie i've seen that seems to be aimed at the mass-market has impressed me to some degree. i mentioned my sassy girl, shiri, and attack on the gas station, but there are others, such as kick the moon, resurrection of the little match girl, and musa. i can't claim to be any sort of expert on korean cinema, but as a consumer, i know what i like and korea's film industry has a far better ratio with me than hollywood does. part of the effect of korean cinema, and similarly, any kind of foreign or independent cinema (from european fare like goodbye lenin to independent fare like coffee and cigarettes to kitano's zatoichi), is that it is a refreshing change. hollywood has its finer points too, even in the mainstream, with films like spider-man 2 fully deserving their box office draws in my opinion.

expanding one's boundaries, exploring other cultures via their cultural product, and having a good time watching a new movie are all worthwhile activities. asian cinema is providing that.

Save the green planet is a really nice movie, but the nice ones (which don't have violence, sex, and that stuff) never seem to gain popularity.

And also Volcano High School is miserable. It sucked so much that even today Korean people make fun of it. Did some of you really enjoy that? There are much more better Korean movies!

ANd as you guys mentioned, Shilmido and Chingu are also awesome movies.
Shilmido is another true story and I'll explain a little about the background that doesn't appear in the movie or in reviews.

Back when North and South Korea had very bad feelings toward each other, North Korea sent some special troops to kill the South Korean president. The amazing thing is that this guy traveling on foot with a 20~30kilo bag travles 60~70 km in one day. The normal rate a person walks on a flat ground is 4 kilometers and hour but this guy with a 20kilo bag and 10kilo gun ran an average of 12 kilometers an hour. This North Korean agent almost got to the blue house where the Korean president lives and this incident of the North Korean special troops shocked everyone in Korea. So what SOuth Korea did was create its on special troops which had only one mission: To kill the leader of North Korea at the time. Since this would be a extremely dangerous mission nobody would want to volunteer. So what they did was get all the prisoners who were scheduled for execution in the near future or sentenced for life and told them that if they complete the mission they will not only be freed but will become heros and rewarded a great deal. So the movie starts with these prisoners going to an island called Shil-Mi-Do, where no one lives and fierce army men are waiting to train them to life-threatening warriors.

"Sex is Zero" and "Singles" were really cool.
"My wife is a gangster 1&2" pretty funny comedy.
"everybody has a little secret" - twisted comedy/drama about lying and cheating
"wet dreams" sex comedy similar to "sex is zero"
"dont believe her" - comedy about how lying might lead into lots of trouble. very good acting by kim ha neul.
Very recently (less than a year) started to come out very interesting korean movies which are hard to
classify as one genre only. Rather mix of two or more with surprising elements (script, idea etc)

I've seen Old Boy about 3 times now. It's so darn fun to watch. And it's funny to see the expressions on your friend's face when you show it to them (there's a lot of stomach churning scenes).

Is the movie "OldBoy" you guys mentioned the story of four friends ?

Hey man, are you talking about the movie acted by the HongKong comedy
actor ZhouXingchi in which there are a few weird guys and a girl?
If so, you see, it is neither korean nor jap!

Nope Oldboy isn't about that. Um I think your talking about "Chigun" which means Friend in Korean. That's about four friends. And maybe your talking about "Four Toes", although I doubt it because it wasn't even that popular in Korea.

I just saw taegukgi and it was very very good. Impressed the hell out of me in everyway and exceeded my expectations... Probably the best movie I've seen this year.

why do most poeple from china like so much "My Sassy girl"????

because of Jeon Ji Hyun???

i don't understand that....

talking about the topic...

the first korean movie i liked ever was "Attack the gas station"

the best korean film ever to me is "Save Green Planet".....

followed by "OldBoy", "JSA", "Memoir of Murder", "Taegeuki", etc....

"Shilmido" can't be compared with "Taegeuki"... "Taegeuki" rules....

i would recommend u guys "My Little Bride"
but recently i noticed the movie was a plagiarism of a Hong Kong Movie...

most of them i downloaded.. and seem in home....
because i can't see them in theatre

Gwisin???? me???? u r wrong....

Its funny how many foreigners praise "Save the Green Planet" but in Korea the movie was a disastrous failure

i wish moon geun young was my bride TT or at least girlfriend..we are same age kaka

it's a cool movie, but not as good as any other typical romantic comedy, say like my tutor friend which was much better. Kim rae won is one of my favorite actors next to jang dong gun and kwon sang woo.

I have. It's a very artistic movie. It's very slow, but overall, it's a good movie. The cinematography is gorgeous. The plot is very good too. Very spiritual.
