Bonus: For me this seemingly mundane picture is actually extremely meaningful. I think in this particular instance Nachtwey got incredibly lucky catching this shot. Maybe I'm looking too much into it, but you guys should tell me if you see what I see.

Water Cure during the Philippine-American War. "The "treatment" consisted of spread-eagling a prisoner on his back, forcing his mouth open with a bamboo stick and pouring gallons of water down his throat. Helpless, the prisoner was pumped with water until his stomach was near the bursting point. Then he was questioned. If he refused to answer, an American soldier stood or kneeled on his belly, forcing the water out. One report by a U.S. soldier told how "a good heavy man" jumped on a prisoner’s belly "sending a gush of water from his mouth into the air as high as six feet.""

Destruction of Manila at the end of the WWII. Upon seeing the damage, General Douglas McArthur commented that it was the most devastated city in the world, second only to Warsaw. At the end of the Battle for Manila, 10% of the population was dead.

n 7 March 1908, Gandhi wrote in the Indian Opinion of his time in a South African prison: "Kaffirs (Kaffir = nigger) are as a rule uncivilised—the convicts even more so. They are troublesome, very dirty and live almost like animals."[15] Writing on the subject of immigration in 1903, Gandhi commented: "We believe as much in the purity of race as we think they do... We believe also that the white race in South Africa should be the predominating race."[16] During his time in South Africa, Gandhi protested repeatedly about the social classification of blacks with Indians, whom he described as "undoubtedly infinitely superior to the Kaffirs".

And he did sleep with naked underaged girls in the same bed, multiple times. He also thinks that if someone invades your country, you should just bend over and die, in the millions, so that the invader thinks your badass and will stop invading you. If the people can't commit to such an act, he is ready to resort to violence.

This picture should always come with some explanation as people who don't follow history probably have no idea the minutes that happened after this picture was taken. Everytime I see this picture I always wonder if the tanks rode over the man or they stopped. You simply can't tell from looking at that picture alone.

The incident

The incident took place near Tiananmen on Chang'an Avenue, which runs east-west along the south end of the Forbidden City in Beijing, on June 5, 1989, one day after the Chinese government's violent crackdown on the Tiananmen protests. The man placed himself alone in the middle of the street as the tanks approached, directly in the path of the armored vehicles (39°54′23.5″N 116°23′59.8″E / 39.906528°N 116.399944°E / 39.906528; 116.399944). He held two shopping bags, one in each hand.[1] As the tanks came to a stop, the man gestured towards the tanks with his bags. In response, the lead tank attempted to drive around the man, but the man repeatedly stepped into the path of the tank in a show of nonviolent action.[2] After repeatedly attempting to go around rather than crush the man, the lead tank stopped its engines, and the armored vehicles behind it seemed to follow suit. There was a pause for a short period of time with the man and the tanks having reached a quiet, still impasse.

Having now successfully brought the column to a halt, the man climbed up onto the hull of the buttoned-up lead tank and, after briefly stopping at the driver's hatch, appeared in video footage of the incident to start calling into various ports in the tank's turret. He then climbed atop the turret and seemed to have a short conversation with a crew member at the gunner's hatch. After ending the conversation, the man alighted from the tank. The tank commander briefly emerged from his hatch, and the tanks restarted their engines, ready to continue on. At that point, the man, who was still standing within a meter or two from the side of the lead tank, leapt in front of the vehicle once again and quickly reestablished the man–tank standoff.

Video footage shows that two figures in blue attire then pulled the man away and disappeared with him into a nearby crowd; the tanks continued on their way.[2] Eyewitnesses disagree about the identity of the people who pulled him aside. Jan Wong is convinced the group were concerned citizens helping him away.[3] Charlie Cole believes that the man was arrested by secret police and was just one of the many executed in the aftermath of the military crackdown, since the Chinese government was never able to produce him after the images became public.[4] In April 1998, Time included the "Unknown Rebel" in a feature titled Time 100: The Most Important People of the Century.

One ring, to rule them all!

well the article suggest something about the landscape but does not give any fact that proves it is not true.

could be arranged , or very well could be not , the dry landscape of Aragon community could resemble the one from andalusia too , and then the photo would be real.

dont think you or me can even tell that , the photo is quite astoundong nonetheless.

Some Context is always nice, since this is one of the most overused and miss quoted pictures of all time. As a controversial picture representing one of the most controversial history event.

I always thought its amazing how people claim there's a "secret execution aftermath" when all the leaders of this incident are still alive, although not welcomed in China.

the most powerful picture for me thus far is of the vulture and the child. hubba pictures are awesome as well.

The quote is from when Gandhi was younger. He later on became much more open-minded person. Everyone says strange things when they are young; you can't laugh at someone respecting Gandhi who has brought a revolutionary mindset just because something he said when he was young.

Also, sleeping with young girls was to test himself and this was a public knowledge.

And when did he ever said "just bend over and die"? He promoted non-violent resistance, such as strikes. He attempted to appeal to the human side of the invaders.
