Marion Tinsley plays chinook (Checker AI)
Why is this a greater picture than Deepblue beating Garry Kasparov? In 1992 Marion Tinsley beat Chinook, and since Chinook won 1990, Chinook would be allowed to challenge the 1st place for national title - but was REFUSED by American Checkers Federation and English Draughts Association, since it was non-human. Tinsley resigned his WORLD champion title in order to be allowed to play Chinook. After 6 games of draws, Tinsley had to withdraw due to health reasons... 7 months later he died, still the best checker player ever to live in many peoples eyes.
Huge respect to Tinsley.
The other man in that picture is Jonathan Schaeffer. He used to be the chair of my computer science department, now he's vice provost. You should seriously considering reading his book. It's an incredible and heartbreaking story, when you hear it in full. (And chinook actually defeated tinsley a few times). When Schaeffer solved checkers a few years ago, he gave us a lecture and told the story.
thats sad stuff right there T.T - fucking journalists only care about money, no regard of human life and common dignity. Its like the picture says, "lets suck the last piece of money that we can get out of this shit girl like the good capitalist we are".
That's not fair at all. Journalists have a job to do. You're oversimplifying things, pictures can have profound effects.
Journalists dont have a job to do. They have the option to do their job, that means they have a choice. Also one must take into consideration that this picture is not a single case. It can be extrapolated more or less to the entire guild of journalism. And when all journalists behaves like that it sends a message. The message is saying, "dont help people, do your job. Your job and your career are more important than helping victims". So what do we get? We get a population suffering from mass psychosis that makes them care less for each other and more for themselves.
Lead by example as they say.. And thats what is happening.
I think it depends on the situation. It could be that in some situations a picture does more than helping the individual could do.
I, personally, don't agree. I just think that saying the picture says "lets suck the last piece of money that we can get out of this shit girl like the good capitalist we are" isn't entirely fair. We don't even know if those journalists helped the girl or not. We don't even know what they thought about the situation. If he says that none of those people care about human life and that they only care about money, then it's based on very very little and it's an unfair statement.
I'm entirely with Travis on this one. My picture was there to remember us how nearly all those pictures came to life, and to learn to have some distance with them.

Polish cavalry galloping through a bombed town during the German invasion of Poland in 1939.
Those Polish men were extremely brave, marching with horses and pole arms against German tanks..
That is a common myth, Polish cavalry mainly fought as dragoons (dismounted). Of the the few cavalry charges they did commit to, most we actually successful.
As a former soldier and now student of international relations focusing on terrorism and warfare, I constantly temper my enthusiasm for such academia by constantly reminding myself that war is hell, and I study it so that I may help avert further conflicts.

That's actually a myth, yes they used horses in the war but they didn't attempt to take on heavy armour with them, that would just be straight up suicidal.
During the German Invasion of Poland in 1939, there is no evidence of Polish Cavalry mounting a brave but futile charge against German tanks using lances and sabres. This seems to have its origins in German propaganda efforts following the Charge at Krojanty in which a Polish cavalry brigade surprised German infantry in the open and charged with sabres until driven off by armoured cars. While Polish cavalry still carried the sabre for such opportunities, they were trained to fight as highly mobile, dismounted infantry and issued with light anti-tank weapons.
If you need a lift from this freaking depressing thread:
wow I never thought I would cry for anything like this. I didn't cry, just almost.
Except at the little girl at 1:29, that shit just broke my heart
Damnit every time this video gets linked somewhere I always watched the whole thing and end up crying ... Although it is nice to see the family's whose loved ones come back as opposed to the depressing stories which dominate the media these days.
I think that is my fifth time watching, I cry every time.
Wow i like those pictures a lot.. really intrigues me. Anyone know where i can get more info on them? Specifically the Man and boy with syringes and the man with all the guns pointed towards him.
