wow I felt the exact same way when I played that game. I never finished the game because of the gameplay (boring combat, weird inventory, too complex and nerdy alchemy etc etc) but never because of the awesome story/setting/feeling and the sex;)

Also I like playing mage or something similar but that game had like 4 spells if I'm not mistaken? Yes you could add special attributes and-what-not but still it felt really boring also the sword combat, while slightly better than the traditional button-mashing-action RPG alá Diablo, it's still quite boring and there wasn't too much depth in to it imo-

hope things will get better with the sequel as I pre-ordered it

It seams that for the two of you games like God of War or Dragon Age 2 are just complex enough. You should stick to those and not play "too nerdy" games...

A couple of pages later, once the thread was changed into "The Witcher 2" I posted another time (two times even I think, since I forgot that I had already posted a second opinion) and reported my experience after picking the game up again. This time I really got into it.

By the way, thanks for being an asshole. I won't report your post since it's probably not warnable/banable and I don't want to spam bad reports (a lot of mine recently weren't warned or banned, so I don't want to push it), but that kind of talking-down to other people just because they don't like something you like is absolutely disgusting.

Oh, yes. I am a jerk and not the guy that called anyone that liked the alchemy nerds. Normally I an not offended by this as I am not ashamed of my nerd/geek status (having a wife that likes me just because of that) but his sentence was a derogatory term which is even funnier since we are on a geek/nerd web site discussing games.
My comment was actually only jerky towards the guy he quoted (and I didn't read that whole post until just right now) but I assumed that guy wrote something similar as this one was so in agreement with him.

Anyways, have fun in your high morals world. Not that it will help you much in the realworld...

The artstyle, view of man and story of these games are as outdated as the Gears series but still widely popular.

The art style, view of man and story of BG2 are so outdated...yet people rightfully think it's one of the best games of all time. Posters confuse me sometimes.

So, you jumped to conclusions, insulted two people for a harmless comment and then leave on a hilariously nerdy obtuse message that is meant to solidify your position as alpha nerd. Does your wife love you for your lack of maturity, too?

(p.s. appreciate the irony in an equally obtuse closing statement?)

WoW are you seriously offended by that?!? Oh my...sorry...

btw I play games like Men Of War and Civ4 so I'm actually a fan of "complex" games. As long as they are deep and have good gameplay of my taste, which the witcher overall I felt was not.

Woah someone is struggling with some insecurity issues...

Anywho, how the hell can Witcher 2 digital premium edition only be 45 dollars right now on steam?
Seems like an amazing price for getting the game + sound track, making of, map, etc.

cause they don't have to package it. The added cost of a collectors edition is normally from packaging and printing etc.

but anyway, I can't wait It looks amazing.

Because it's not EA and they won't demand heaps of gold for any game, no matter how good it is. Besides, from the developer's point of view, retail sucks. Digital sales profit them much, much more - and in the case of CDProjekt, digital sales at GOG profit them the most (which I guess is the reason it's the only place you can get a 100% DRM free copy, to lure customers who would otherwise choose steam over GOG in a hearbeat).

Hmmm...if this game manages to live up to the hype, at a $45 release price, I'll buy the biggest, stupidest hat I can find, then eat it. They're promising far, far too much to make it sound plausible. Some big part of it has to suck, whether its going to be the UI/voice acting/combat (again), the length of the game or the depth and breadth of your decisions.

Yes, because a huge price guarantees quality. Oh wait, it does not, look up Dragon Age 2.
The first Witcher sold over 1 million units on the PC, CDP Red obviously thinks the second installment will do even better and they are not looking for a huge profit margin either. Remember that development costs are much, much lower because it's a PC exclusive title, limited to a single platform.

I also hated the little side quests where you picked it up on the notice board and just had to kill a few monsters. I know stuff like this is a bonus that should be ignored if you don't like it, but somehow for me it lessened the quality of the game.

I also lacked an emotional connection to Gerald himself and his aims/goals.

First of all, it's Geralt, not Gerald. And second, very important thing is that he's a witcher.
I know this profession seems unfamiliar, but it's more or less a witch/monster-hunter. The notice board kill-some-stuff side-quests actually make sense. In the books Geralt was taking some small jobs like that on his way, part of his job description and also an additional source of income.

Makes more sense now?

I agree with heishe about this. I also hated this kind of quests in DAO and DA2 as well.

It makes sense, of course, and as I posted before (you probably missed it), a couple of pages later in this thread I posted about my experiences when I picked the game up again, and this time I completely changed my opinion. When I posted the post that you're quoting, I hadn't played the game beyond the beginning of chapter 2. I didn't have anything to do for a few days, so I installed the game again and this time played it through.

The notice board missions work their way perfectly into the flow of the game after a while.

I'm also sensing hostility in your post (in a way it sounds like "lol you idiot know nothing about The Witcher universe so your opinion doesn't matter"). Jesus guys, even if I completely hated the game you don't need to be so mean towards other people.

edit: "A couple of pages later"... this thread is only 5 pages long.

On March 09 2011 18:30 heishe wrote:
I've recently (read: two days ago) started playing The Witcher again, so, naturally I'm pretty excited for this game.

I bought the game when it came out a few years back, but I actually never played it far beyond the part where you enter Vizima first, for various reasons (Alchemy system seemed confusing, monster and human enemy balance seemed to be really bad [And I still believe that Echinops are OP, lol], didn't dig the setting), but I've been playing maybe a good of 10 or 15 hours already in these two days, and seeing as I don't even receive silver talent points yet it seems like this game has a ton of content.

I don't know what kept me playing this time, but after you "get" the alchemy system and it's uses, and after you learn to use your combat mechanics better (dodging, signs etc.) this game is really awesome. The story/setting of the world is a really gritty (very few black/white moral choices and views presented to you) and the way your decisions seem to impact the story seems to be rather huge, even though I can't judge it completely because I still just entered the Trade District of Vizima.

Judging from the preview videos, the combat system seems to have been improved a lot, as it looks a lot more fluid now. Also looks like they've cleaned up the UI quite a bit, and finally there's also a bit of visual character customization.

I'm not sure what they've done about the skill system yet, the one in the first game was largely flawless, safe for the fact that nobody tells you what some of the effects like "Pain +10%" etc. actually mean.

One two edged blade though: The game looks really beautiful, but that makes me afraid that I won't be able to run it fluidly. I've got a pretty powerful graphics card (radeon hd 4890, it doesn't support DX11 but in terms of pure processing power it's still better than most medium-prized cards that come out these days), but my CPU is pretty bad (Core 2 E5600) and I've only got 2GB of DDR2 ram. The witcher 1 runs absolutely flawless, but then again it's also a few years old now.

edit: lol what, I already posted a rather long post about the same thing on page two. Didn't remember that at all, anyways, I'll leave this post, I guess it can't hurt.

It also makes you need to acquire the bestiary article about the monster in question which can mean talking to random NPC's to hear their stories or gettin some orens to buy a book, so not exaaaactly just kill x number of monsters. Anyways, the majority of the time you just finish that quest while you do another quest.

I agree though, they don't add too much to the game. I'd prefer more the royal huntsman quests where it feels like you're seeking exceptional monsters.
Why am I still here?

Or its just bravado and building up hype...just like every other company in the world trying to sell you an entertainment product. The first game wasn't exactly perfect (the voice acting and dialogue alone made me facepalm more times than I can recall) and if you think this one is, I think you're just setting yourself up for disappointment. These guys aren't special. They've got mouths to feed, and investors to pay back, just like everyone else in the industry, so either they're not letting on the full truth, they've got an accounting team that have taken a few too many blows to the head or they're adopting an altruistic policy to use this game to build up goodwill, and what are known as 'brand deposits', to make a name for themselves to sell future products (but that's a pretty slippery slope - piss off your fans by releasing a bad or mediocre product later-on and you've just wasted that entire endeavor - plus its ultimately the publisher footing that bill, not the developer).

Naturally I'm reserving judgement until I've played it, but I'd rather be reserved and then later impressed by the product, than expect perfection.
