Nobody's discussing it? I guess I'll chip in. So far, this season has been incredible, a change of director really shows with a brilliant episode such as Devil's Cherry. There, in my opinion, hasn't been a bad episode so far. The Red John arc is really escalating, and it is becoming more and more mysterious, which is incredible considering that the more we know about him/her, the more mysterious it gets. My theory is that, Lisbon is Red John. And before you flame me and call it absurd, here's why. At times, she can see right through Jane, just as he does with so many others. Coincidentally, she only does that when something is relevant to Red John, for example this most recent episode Cherry Picked, she knew instantly that Jane knew Walter the Policeman knew something. Back in season 1, when Jane was pursuing Red John's accomplice, Lisbon showed up early, and supposedly spooked Red John. When Jane confronted her, she simply said "Red John's long gone" with clear certainty. In the season 2 finale, when Jane is kidnapped by the two Red John copycats, Jane left a message on Lisbon's answering machine revealing his whereabouts. He told nobody else. And also that mysterious Mentalist music played during that scene that showed her answering machine. I find that odd if Lisbon isn't intended to be Red John. But she could be just another accomplice of Red John, you might say. No! She's the main character of the show and has been there since the beginning. She can't be just another accomplice. She is Red John. Also, that would be an amazing twist of events. What do you people think?

Still entertaining, but definitely worse than previous seasons IMO I said when I started watching this show if it lasted more than 3-4 seasons it would get worse and worse (there's only so many things you can do with a character like Jane before it gets less entertaining, and although I love the Red John story arc it 1) will mark the ending of the show and 2) is getting too drawn out and predictable (high ratings and show renewed for next season? ofc they aren't going to catch him).
Your theory is ridiculous and wrong btw GhostLink. wtf lol. |

Care to elaborate? Still hooked to this show after all this while. Used to be my mom's favourite show until she found classic Hong Kong dramas on our satellite TV channel. |

It's still pretty good but i really don't want to watch any more fillers... this show has been going on for too long to get at all excited about anything else than the Red John storyline.

The mentalist is a two-edged sword of sorts:
One one hand, you have some of the best crime/thriller episodes you'll ever see - ONLY WHEN - the Red John arc is the primary focus of the episode.
On the other, when it's just about catching bad guy A or killer B, the show is incredibly predictable, so much that Jane's arsenal of tricks becomes a case of 1-2-3, repeat, 1-2-3, repeat. It's not that they're that bad compared to say, CASTLE or any other similar show out there...the problem is that you can't raise the bar so high with the Red John episodes and then go back to the stone age and pretend your audience is not going to hate you for it.
Last episode I just skipped the filler 'monster-of-the-week' crap (akin to what the X files had when they were not following the fun main story arc) and went straight into the red john bit.
I can only hope Heller will wake the fuck up, get his act together and finally focus the series on what it should have been about all along: catching Red John...and not drag us through 20 seasons to do so.Last edit: 2012-11-06 09:41:44 |

The show's becoming a bit formulaic and same-old for me. It's really good when the Red John arc picks up but we only get a couple of episodes of that a season
I'm finding the in between episodes progressively uninteresting.
Murder > establish some shady suspects > insert some witty dialogue from Jane > Jane randomly solves murder.
It's like they just make episodes based of a template now without much thought going into the script. Kind of like what happened with House: it only got interesting towards the season finale when something interesting and different happened from the predictable norm.
That said, I still enjoy this show but not as much as I once did. I just wish they'd get to the Red John stuff.
I'll place $10 on RJ being Lisbon too. Or that creepy IA guy Laroache (sp?). |

I don't know, maybe previous seasons I would agree with you that the show's getting old and formulaic unless Red John arc is involved. This season, all of the episodes, Red John or not, have been brilliant, and most of them include Red John arc, even if only a little of it. Last episode for example, and the episode when he's high on tea. It's still very creative, more creative and interesting than other crime dramas. |

I've been hoping against hope forever that RJ is Van Pelt. The thought tickles me. |

I thought about that. She has red hair, and joined CBI after Jane did. But then, remember her boyfriend, FB O'Laughlin?
When he went to the car to kill the two policemen guarding the premises, he told Van Pelt he was going to get his phone. Nobody was around. Why would he need to do that if she was Red John?

| i actually love pretty much every single episode of this show. It is always entertaining, and the last episode opens up a completely new playing ground, adding a "bad guy" who probably gets taken down in the season finale (Volken). So I'm fine with that, even though it feels like an incomplete episode (the side plot not getting completed in one episode). And Jane breaking into prison will be AWESOME. |

Unfortunately this is American television where they milk a show for ALL ITS WORTH. The RJ arc will probably only be the main focus for a few episodes a season, at least until they decide ratings suck, cancel the show and (hopefully) finish it off. |

| And yet another episode where Red John material covers 1 minute tops. Congratulations Fago Heller, you've effectively killed a once very promising show. You can quit life now. |
