It could work, but it has to be on that gamemode where there's no respawn (forgot the name) and no more than 16 players, to make it more squad based.
Imagine a 32vs32 WCG Final battle on Apartments, with commentators that narrate it like a documentary...that could be, interesting.

Hehe, well. I think at RO1 the most common playersize was 8 per team. The no-respawn gamemode is called countdown and I think you can easily play 6on6 because the maps are kinda small. |

RO1 supported 32 players by default, but modders quickly upped it to 50.
I do not believe RO would work as an esport because all the fun/challenging maps are too large to easily be observed. Another big problem is that it is difficult to tell who to observe at any given moment. With SC2, it's easy enough to just track army movements, but when there's a few dozen people running around, all having their own little engagements, it seems nearly impossible to tell who is in the most exciting, most worthy-of-being-observed situation. Lastly, it doesn't support replays, as far as I know. |

| Euh, at countdown you actually play only on 1/4 of the map since its divided into 4 parts. It's not that big in fact. Haven't tried it yet but I dont think it supports replays atm. At least the devs said some weeks ago they they'll implement shoutcasts, a streamingfunction and replays. |

For public servers, maybe (I never really played the first one). But I think he's talking about clanwars.
edit:
a patch just got released: + Show Spoiler + Everyone,
I wanted to make everyone aware first off that we're hard at work addressing the issues that have been discovered since the launch. Additionally, we'll be releasing the first patch for the game today in just a little while. This patch will address among other things:
- fixing the day 1 unlocks not working - spawn menu looping bug - various crash fixes - decreased AI MG accuracy for vehicle AI
To be quite frank with you it has taken us a little longer than usual to get an update out post launch. Without going into the boring technical details, the patching functionality built into UE3 is heavily geared toward consoles. So we've struggled a bit working out how to properly do patches on the PC, without requiring a massive download. Anyone in the beta remembers that every update for the beta was fairly large, and this is the reason why. We had thought we had all of this worked out before the final release, but that was not the case.
So rather than saddle you all with a multi-gig download for a small code patch, we've been slaving away on the patching system to get this issue resolved. Fortunately, it looks like we've finally cracked this issue, and will be able to deliver code patches to you all now without requiring overly large downloads.
So once again, you will see an update today, and many more to come. Thank you for your patience while we work diligently to get these issues resolved for you.

If anyone is interested in playing competitively me and the rest of my team CoreNA are looking to fill in a dedicated 8 man lineup. We usually have 8-12 people on each night and try to get scrims as often as possible.
In RO1 we were the #1 ranked NA clan with a ladder record of 63-6 with 15 ties as well as a few tournament wins and runner ups. Then the team went on hiatus as the NA scene died down but now with RO2 we are making a comeback.
Message our clanleader on steam if interested(tell him Ziggy sent you); http://steamcommunity.com/id/CoreNAVader/
This is for North American players only. Our sister clan core is EU based but I'm not sure if they are recruiting.

8v8 has been the standard and works really well on almost all maps for RO1 and ROmod.
Now in RO2 it looks like territory(the classic gamemode) will remain 8v8 and countdown will be 6v6. Trust me 16vs16 would not be fun especially on apartments. Even 10v10 it's tough to communicate effectively and maps feel kind of crowded. |

| They had a few campaign tournaments back in the mod days that lasted for months fighting over a map. It was neat, I never joined one because I was too busy with my clan doing scrims and some community made ladder just after 2.0 was out. I played with some of my old clan mates last week and it was pretty fun to see some old names from the old community hopping into our game. |

so ive been playing this game for the last week and when it runs fine it's a total blast. one of the most rewarding shooters ive played in years (IE surviving a long time and killing people actually feels like an accomplishment). but there are just so many shitty bugs with this game right now
for instance half of the patches make it almost impossible to actually launch the game. I've found a few tricks that work once in a while (reinstalling UE3 engine, re-validating game cache on steam, etc) but right now there's no way the game will launch (and a steam on TWI forums shows that other people have the same issue right now too).
also the game is so poorly optimized that it causes my PC to overheat and shutdown in the middle of gameplay A LOT. I can run any other modern game fine as long as I have a fan pointed at my tower (with side casing off), but RO2 still causes it to overheat a lot :\.
I really wish TWI spent a longer time optimizing this shit before releasing, but hopefully they wont put off too many players before it all gets fixed. |

Its been getting better. I got the game at launch, and my mid-level computer could barely run it at the lowest settings. Now I can run fine at medium, with only AA off, which doesn't bother me at all since I never notice the AA in the first place.
There's still some really dumb bugs, but most the optimization seems pretty good so far, at least for me. I wish they would fix the scope blurring bug, the bug where when you first go to iron sights they sometimes dont line up properly so you cant aim, the bug that won't let you change your respawn point once you've picked it, and last I'd like the chat to have team colors again, it can be tough to tell what team someone is on when they talk in allchat.
The crashes seem to have stopped though, which is good. |

yea the last patch fixed the launch bug for me and dusting out my PC fixed the overheating problem (holy shit i forgot how dusty PCs can get lol).
this game is such a blast. too bad the leveling/unlock system is sort of fucked up right now, although it's definitely one of those games that is totally fun by itself without needing a bunch of arbitrary unlocks to keep you playing. just give me my Mosin–Nagant and i'm good to go. |

The things that bother me the most now are a couple of bugs. First, I hate how the scope blurs from suppression. It makes sense while you're suppressed, but it gets stuck like that. It also has a nasty habit of not being properly aligned when you shoulder it, so you aren't aiming where you think.
Second is that I get awful FPS or lag when in CQC, especially if either me or the other guy has a fully automatic weapon. I get great performance any other time, just full auto stuff kills it.
Anyone else have these bugs? |

With all the negative, bug-related comments, I thought I'd just chime in to say I adore this game, and I have not had any problems whatsoever with bugs or performance issues.
As someone else mentioned, managing to kill several people and survive for a long time really feels like a huge achievement. It's terrific if you should have the good fortune of joining with some people that are actually working together and/or using mics. I've also found that being shot unexpectedly from medium/long range makes me actually physically flinch, such is the brutality and suddenness of it. |

I do too. I've made some bug-complaints earlier in the thread, but that doesn't mean I don't love the game.
Its already pretty good, and once they stamp out the last of these bugs it'll be excellent. |

| Played a couple of games on classic mode and it was a blast! At first it was pretty hard to recognize friends from enemies, but after a while that's not a problem. Great game might even buy it, if there is enough players after this free weekend. |

If you played this before and were disappointed, reinstall and play Classic Mode. Shit is amazing, they really stepped it up with this latest patch. This game is definitely worth a buy if you don't already got it. Been having a blast with it all weekend.
Also, Germans sprint with their guns in one hand and Russians in both hands like they were trained to do. That's how you tell who is who at farther distances.Last edit: 2012-06-01 03:02:09 |
