Hello, I'm in the market for a mechanical keyboard with Cherry Brown switches.
I've come down to the Leopold or Filco. The Leopold I'm purchasing from Elite Keyboards and the Filco from KeyboardCo.
Given I can get them for equal price which keyboard do you guys think I should get.
The Filco I can buy now, the Leopold not till end of March. Although I don't necessarily need any of them right away, I just want to pick the best one. Again price is not factoring in to my decision thanks again!

I thought Filco is releasing a new version soon?
|
Isn't a Leopold just a redesigned Filco? I thought someone posted pics that it even had a couple Filco parts. Most likely going to get a Leopold to see what all the jazz is about.

I've got a Filco Majestouch with Cherry Brown switches (from KeyboardCo), and I'm more than happy with it. I can't compare with the Leopold (afaik they are really similar), but as price doesn't matter and the Filco is available, you can blindly go for it.

Since no one has really picked up a leopold yet, at this point we can only assume that build quality is pretty much equal and that the switches feel the same on both.
So basically you have to consider price (where are you that they are equal in price? In the US leopold is 99+shipping, filco is 130 and up) the detachable usb cord that leopold has, and the slight aesthetic difference in that leopold has a more significant "roundness" to it. And I guess the way the logo looks.
I personally think that filco looks slightly better, but given the fact that no US sellers carry filco tenkeyless I'd go for the leopold right now. But that might change by the time I get a chance to get another mech keyboard, so we'll see.

Has Filcos and the prices are with DHL shipping already added in. I just ordered my Filco with cherry browns (same exact keyboard as FruitDealers) My 3rd purchase from this store. Great seller.

just wondering - how do you guys feel about the layout of the f keys on these mechanical keyboards?
i rely on them a lot for macro and they the f2, f3, f4 keys seem further from #1-#5 than on my keyboard.

However I have bound one of the side buttons on my mouse to CTRL so I press that and F2 to save that camera position for example. Pressing ctrl F2 with one hand is very awkward now that I try it. If you bind it to Shift F2 it's fine though.

I think both are good but Filco's still better.

Heres a review from geekkack.org, a website that is dedicated to keyboards
Leopold TenkeyLess Review
Though personally, i would buy the leopold but still use my topre 103UB 55g, elitekeyboards are only selling it for $100 now, its a nice price considering similarities between the two keyboards, filco and leopold.

The difference in quality between the Filco and Leopold keyboards are negligible. Just go with the one that you will have easier access to.
Leopolds are going to be cheaper as they'll be stocked by EK, whereas you need to get Filcos from overseas. Amazon stocks them, but at 150USD you may be able to find a cheaper price from Armygroup or PCHome (assuming they restock soon).
Filco will be coming out with the Majestouch 2 in a few weeks/months, so you might want to be on the lookout for that. Not sure what's changed, the guys over at Geekhack have a thread all about the new Filco so you can check there for more information.
Good luck!

Thanks for all the help guys, I guess there really is no way to tell which of the two is better till people can get their hands on the Leopolds end of March.
I think I'll just wait for the Elite Keyboards - CherryMX Brown TenKeyless "OTAKU"
Took me awhile to decide between the regular printed keycap Cherry Brown, but the OTAKU is just too cool. I'm hoping I don't run into any issues where having NON-printed keys will actually slow me down lol. Anyone with the OTAKU Filco experience can chime into any potential problems haha

Brian from EliteKeyboards has this to say about Filcos versus Leopolds. Very detailed review from the man himself.
As for printed versus non-printed issue: I'm a touch typist myself and don't have any issues with regular typing. But when it comes to looking for symbols, I have to look down at my keyboard. And when playing SC2, there are occasions where I also look down at my keyboard to make sure my hands are on the right keys as they're positioned differently than when I am typing.
It's just a mental thing for me to have the prints on there, but YMMV.
If they had black on black keycaps available for purchase like the ones on the HHKB topre boards or the Ducky 1087 boards, I'd be all over that in a heartbeat.

I own the leopold with brown switches and I never regret it buying this keyboard.. The reason why I went for the leopold and not for the filco is I liek the shape of the board, the led lighting under the keycap of capslock and scroll lock and the no logo print on the keyboard and sixty review on geekhack convinced me too to get the leopold. However I would be equally satisfied if I bought a filco if the leopold did not exist btw I have korean layout keyboard and it is awesome :D

Does Leopold has white tenkeyless, blue switch ?

I'm unsure, but it looks as though EliteKeyboards will only carry Black Tenkeyless Brown, Blue, and Brown "OTAKU" keycaps initially at the end of this month. I suggest contacting their support team for a quick answer.

Except for the fact that it's ridiculously overpriced? o_O

On March 08 2011 08:45 hitman133 wrote: Does Leopold has white tenkeyless, blue switch ? White as in the color of the keyboard? No. Currently, there are black tenkeyless blue and brown switches and an 'otaku' version of the brown which just means that the keys are blank. They will eventually have fullsize keyboards and they are also considering cherry red keys which are linear like blacks, but have a actuation force less than a brown.

lol that guy was trolling and was advertising. thats why it was closed.
depends where you live. if youre in the US. go to amazon. if europe i would say keyboardco. before amazon stocked filcos (from keyboardco) most people bought it from pchome but you would either need to be able to read chinese or use the geekhack guide to order from there. I think pchome still has the $10 shipping to anywhere in the world.
