Hey people! How about we use this thread to discuss Firefox 4 and don't turn it into the 34892th Chrome vs Firefox flamewar? |
It has some pretty nifty features.
Biggest new feature is probably the tabs. They've been moved to the top like the way Chrome has them. (Can be disabled if you don't like it this way.) But having them at the top gives you a lot more screen space.
Refresh, Go, and Stop have been combined into one button for even more space.
There's the new App tab feature. App tabs are like permanent tabs, so you can have TeamLiquid.net open 24/7! :D
FF4 improves HTML5 support and CSS3 support among other things. Javascript runs significantly faster as well.
New to version 4, is hardware acceleration. This takes some strain off of the CPU and renders web pages using the GPU!
Over 1.5 million downloads in the first 2 hours!
You can get the new version here: Firefox 4

Firefox 4 uses Direct2D to render the font on Windows 7. You can adjust the font appearance by calibrating ClearType located under Control Panel > Appearances
+ Show Spoiler + Or disable hardware acceleration entirely.
Articles:
Firefox 4 blew away previous versions of the browser, with performance results between three and six times better. Firefox 4 also outdid Chrome 10, Opera 11.1 and Internet Explorer 9 in the Kraken benchmark, as GigaOM recently noted. Bottom line: It's blazingly fast. 10 Things to Drool Over in Firefox 4 - PCWorld
Do we have a winner? Firefox's Tab Groups and App Tabs are brilliant, and the browser's Swiss Army Knife reputation remains intact. If you use a lot of tabs and need lots of extensions then Firefox is the browser for you; if you're spending all day in a few web apps and your need for add-ons begins and ends with ad-blocking, then Google is your friend. hmmmm, is it worth it if you use chrome?
I don't know about a return to the fox...something inside me just longs for that raw power of the little orange fox but I can't...I can't just rush back to it

I've been using it during the beta for a while. It's much more like Chrome now so I'm really liking it. Dunno if you want to switch back from Chrome if you're already using it.
|
Does FF4 have tab stacking now? I might switch back to it for that.

Loading times are not noticeable to me. Or they are such a small difference it null to me.
IE9 just came out also. Ive heard good things but people are still sticking with chrome/firefox.
Chrome is arguable "The Best" because of its security.

Just installed it. Love the interface layout. As for add-ons, Adblock, Firebug and FireGestures are compatible. w00t.

Chrome is annoying because it consistently updates flash without your knowledge, and I use a full-screen flash hack (so i can view videos fullscreen on second monitor without them minizing when I change to other monitor) and it updating flash means I have to re-hex edit the file. But I use both FF and chrome, I dont know why, I just use both

That is no longer an issue in Firefox. You can view fullscreen on one monitor and do work on the other one if you like now. It's pretty awesome actually.
EDIT: It's actually an inbuilt feature of Flash since version 10.1 or 10.2

There is a private navigation function on the new firefox, if you use this noone will be able to see your history unless they have software for it(E.G work stuff) ofcourse this is awesome for......obvious purposes.

I think FF4 should address most concerns about speed vs chrome.

Um, I am using the beta. If I download FF4 using the link you gave me, will my beta be updated to 4 or will I have to uninstall beta and download FF4 in the process? Lol

Mine auto-updated to the Release version of FF4. You should check Help--> About Firefox to see if you have the actual version and not Beta.

I'm not definitely sure, but I believe betas are separate installs? If that's right, you would need to uninstall the beta and dl and install FF4.

Interesting, just updated.
I likes is so far.

Oh ok, well what I did was just help --> about --> update but I wasn't too sure so I uninstalled and installed firefox 4.0 lawl. Either way, this browser is awesome! I just hate the fact that when I have to open private tabs (lol) it has to close my standard tabs...why? :[ I have to use opera instead for my needs xD
