After finding myself playing endless stream of ZvZs today I thought I'd check the stats on sc2ranks to see if there has indeed been an increase in Zerg players:
http://www.sc2ranks.com/stats/league/all/1/all
Protoss remains the most played race but Zerg is now comfortably second right down to gold. Maybe Terran players are moving away from Zerg now the supposed Terran dominance has ended and Toss is the race pulling in the tournament wins. Or maybe now people have a much better grasp of the game it's easier to play Zerg. The new maps could also be a feature as the larger maps seem less Terran freindly and much better for the macro Zerg.
Have you recently switched to Zerg and if so, why?
|
Yes is switched to Zerg with the start of Season too...but the Main Reason was that i hatet PvP and i had rly no fun playing it. And Terran was a bit meh to me.
|
Terran is harder to use on the actual map pool imo. And people are doing better at holding any early abusive start all terrans use to do and win with. ( hellions, banshee, bio push, etc.. )
|
I played Protoss at release but stopped having fun with it. I took many months off then started playing Zerg a couple of weeks ago. I just find it more fun; there's more stuff to do and wins are a lot more satisfying, though I can't say if I'm doing any better or worse with Zerg than Protoss.
|
Most people who play very casually played Terran. Most people who play very casually have stopped playing.
Zerg has always been very popular amongst players who play fairly competitively (above Plat), except maybe in Korea (probably because the really aggressive playstyles are so anti-zerg and pro-Terran).
The new maps are really bad for Terran, too.
|
I had 7 Zvz's in a row yesterday....won 5 of em lost to a 6 pool QQ.
|
It's funny to see this and to think that terran players still hold a reputation for being cheesy and "less skilled" from the early days of SC2.
With all the patch, map and metagame changes terran is definitely not any easier than the other 2 races.
|
Terran is underrepresented in the high leagues now... o_O
Terran is still the second most played race, but is in 3rd place for Masters and Diamond... all the way down to silver
Clearly Blizzard screwed up the bunker build time -_-

I honestly just think people are improving drastically. Zerg is a race that is formidable when played well, and awful if you don't have a very good understanding of the game.

Exactly. Meanwhile, Protoss is a race that is formidable if you follow a cookie-cutter build order, so they don't really have to get better at the game as a whole to advance, whereas you can't play Zerg without actually knowing what you're doing. Long-term benefits over short term "hey this colossus unit is winning me a lot of games, let's do that every game!"

I started as Protoss in the Beta, mimiced Huk and 4gated my way in to Diamond and Nr.1 at my league. Got bored with Protoss and started playing Terran. Got bored again and started playing Zerg. Played Zerg until November when I switched to Protoss again. Played for another few weeks and then I quit. It's the same for me in every game, I get bored too quickly with whatever choice I make.
Since November I've been watching all the GSL games and day9 every now and then. But now I recently started playing SC2 again and I chose Zerg.
I still feel like it's the hardest race where every game is a constant uphill battle. With the other races I could just mimic a build and if I executed it well I would would win. (4gate, 3gate expand into 6gate etc etc). With Zerg I have to think more, scout more and make a lot more decisions. I also feel like there are many more areas around Zerg play that has not been explored due to the dynamic nature of the race. I mean it's only recently that we've seen pro Zergs get really agressive.
So yeah, I guess I'm not a recent switcher, but I can understand why people switch.

Sweet. Terran once again the least played race. Missed the old days of BW.
|
I think the statistical uptrend in zerg comes from 2 things:
Firstly, zerg demands more from the player, and people are getting better. It's not as big a deal that you can be brutally punished for making mistakes if you simply don't make those mistakes, and with the map sizes increased so much, those mistakes cost you games less often.
Second, I think the very fact that zerg "sucked" made people play it, because if you can win with zerg, you're awesome, if you lose, it wasn't your fault.

I played Terran for maybe 20-25 games before I got really bored of it. Especially closer to the release, it was just too easy to play as them, and Zerg seemed a lot more difficult/was the race I played for years in Brood War, so I switched to Zerg. My problem with ZvZ is that everybody is so fucking bad that it turns into either mass ling/baneling, or 7pools with allin spine crawlers. At least in BW zvz relied heavily on mechanics...in SC2, banelings completely ruin it.

Lol imbalance whine. You could have done so much better for your first post.
As a Zerg player who Random's half the time, Terran is by far the hardest race for me to play. Especially in TvZ. That matchup is a nightmare for me, but it's probably because I hate tank play.

I have been a zerg player from the start, however a friend of mine started as a terran player and just recently switched to zerg. He switched to zerg because he just got sick of certain match ups as a terran, TvT is incredibly complex and difficult as well as tire some to play at a high level. So my friend decided to give zerg a try and has been playing with them ever since, the mobility of zerg is the part I especially love, counter attacking and mutalisk harassment is always a lot of fun to execute.

Lol if the increase in Zerg players has come from players switching from the other races. Then it wont last.
They'll get frustrated and switch back.
Edit: Oh yeah i wouldn't trust anything Sc2ranks says for about a month. Ever since the recent season swap, all the ladders have been dramatically changed.

It's the new maps, Terran are forced to play macro oriented games...

there is a difference between imbalance and something that is just really easy to use. I'm not playing in the GSL, I can't comment on balance, but I can comment on how absurdly easy some strategies are to pull off.
Do you really think it's as hard to get a protoss deathball as it is to beat it?
|
These days about 60% of my games are vs protoss, 30% against zerg and then only 10% against Terran. ZvT is my easiest matchup, it's a shame there aren't more terrans I enjoy it the most with ling/bane/muta/ultra progression, and I like winning ZvZ is kinda fun with more focus on micro at early game FE bane vs bane and mid/late macro roach/infestor play. Kinda but sometimes slightly mystic with the early roach pushes.
ZvP is still so so hard...but getting better since I have to play protoss 6/10 times a day.
