Okay, before I begin this post, I'll give you a brief blurb about myself:
3700 masters terran last season Top 200 on sc2 ranks this season (NA) Played scbw non competitively (sucked) No gaming experience (sc is the only game I play, as I'm into soccer)
I'm writing this from my phone so it'll be a bit lazy, but this is for lower level players that are scared to ladder, please don't troll this thread.
The reason I'm writing this is because everyone I coach, my family members who play, and a lot of teamliquiders are scared to ladder, and I want to help!
The main reason I think your scared is because of the harshness of the community on judging people. Always remember, this is a game meant for fun and entertainment- it is not here to make you uncomfortable or scared. Whenever your losing, or scared to play, remind yourself your playing a game. Games are fun!
No one is judging you. Someone might say you suck, but who are they to tell you? For a lot of us, gaming is for gaming. Its not a profession. I know I'm not gooid enough to be a pro in the short run, and if your reading this the same probably applies to you. Don't play to become a pro at first, play to have fun. A lot of people take this game to serious, if its your job, that's good, but if your just someone on the ladder, have fun without fear of being judged.
You don't suck. I mean, if you do, its because you don't play! The more you play, the better you'll get. Plain and simple. Sure you gain knowledge and learn cool builds watching the pros, but chances are the builds you learn can't be applied at your own level because your opponents all in every game. Play the game, learn at your pace and level. Mass ladder games is a great way to learn and get better.
Your goals are wrong. Don't have a goal to be masters, gold, etc. Make your goal to improve and learn from mistakes. If you get better, you'll reach higher leagues. Just have a goal to get better! Playing people at your level in competitive games such as the ladder will bring the best out of you. Customs match you with people better or worse, which won't be the best practice environment. While laddering, you may lose at first, but watch the reoplay and identify your mistakes. Eventually you'll identify all your mistakes and you'll never make them again as long as you learn from them.
The ladder matches you with people at your own level, so don't think your not good enough to ladder, because if that was the case you wouldn't ever find a match!
If you want to get better and rid yourself of your fears, click that button and gogoogogog.
Its a game. Its fun. Go have fun! No ones watching!
Sorry this is a bit long, and I know someones going to post negative comments about me and my post, but that's fine, its the internet, just like ladder--its not important who judges you here as long as you try to leave a positive impact while enjoying yourself! I hope this helps atleast one person.
If it matters... I was placed in silver league when the game came out, and now I'm a top 200 NA player (soon to be ) ! So you can do it to, aslong as you remember, its a game and mass those ladder games! sorry for typos... Again typing from blackberry.
Goodnight everyone!
Ps if anyone wants personal advice and don't want to post on the thread in fear of being judged, you can add me @ nayebo.604 on NA, I can even offer game tips for any race but ima force you to ladder so be prepared!

Feelgood thread is feelgood
But seriously almost everyone I know who plays SC2 online ignores 1v1 ladder because it is too stressing and too punishing.
Plus being ranked Gold is considered to be an insult, you have to be at least top 5 diamond league and even then you lose face.
I too dislike 1v1. too stressful and feels like working...
|
You got to remember that your rank and your results don't reflect yourself outside of the game. Its meant to give you a measuring stick for your skill... I personally find it fun trying to get more points and rise up my division. If you lose, so what! Its points. Not money, integrity, or health

I do admit it is sometimes stupid and boringand aggrovating to play vs cheesers, but once you see every cheese once, and learn to stop it, you won't have to lose to it again
Incorporate safeties in your build to eliminate the possibilities of cheesey strats and regularly scout early game

The cure to that is just to play even more! Listen to music and you'll be even more relaxed! its like your first university exam, your nervous as hell. But by the time your in your second year, you just want to rush through your exams and enjoy starcraft when your home

NaYeBo, were you every afraid of ladder? and if you were how did you overcome it?

When you come from 1.6 community, and you know when you make atleast one mistake you'll be laughed and so on, so sometimes it's no easy for me, still i'm laddering but that "1.6 community experience" always lies with me...

As for me I had a problem playing any kind of game in bw without any friend for some unknown reason. Gonna force myself play some 1:1 laddergames later today tho since I really want that baneling portrait, it's so cute.

To be honest, when I purchased the game, I thought ladder would be like broodwar (no importance), so I jumped into my placement matches (without playing the game even once before). In the start, I wouldn't say I was scared... But I did feel pressure, as I wanted a good win/loss ratio. This ruined the game for me, as I got upset at losing.
Then I realized, so many pros in korean don't even have good ladder ratings. And the reason is because its for practice. Ladder is where you can afford to lose. Its practice. The real games are tournies and games when you want to impress your friends. Who cares if you lose 10 pts in a ladder game? Who cares if you have more losses then wins. I mostly found my self enjoying ladderwhen I began streaming. People often criticize my play, but if you remind yourself its just practice, who cares? Do people make fun of kobee bryant when he misses shots during practice?

Don't have a goal to be masters, gold, etc. Make your goal to improve and learn from mistakes.
I agree with the second part, but that doesn't rule out you cannot have a goal. My goal is to reach Diamond since beta. In retail I made it to platinum with Zerg. After a break of a couple of weeks I sucked and got demoted to Gold. Now I'm plat again and still determined to reach diamond, getting better every day.
However, the most important thing is that EACH game - win or loss - will get you one step closer to improvement. The wrong mindset - winning games - will only yield results in 50% of the games you play..
Therefore I doubt if removing losses from the record will actually help people to ladder..

i've been in masters since it came out but i hardly play which makes me feel like i won't be nearly good enough to stay in masters, so whenever i play its stressful cuz i dont want to get demoted. i always end up winning more often than i lose and climbing the ladder, but its still stressful and i can't play more than 2-3 games at once. i want to get better and everything and i think i have potential it's just easier to relax and play some WoW or LoL or HoN. Need to get pumped up to play SC2 which is usually only after watching GSL or TSL or something. oh well.

These mistakes are in games where penalties are not severe and you can easily learn from them by watching replays and eliminating the future possibilities of replicating them.
In real life you have no replays. So embrace your gaming mistakes and move on if people crucify you for losing in a video game, they're the ones who are living sad lives, not you for losing and learning and having fun!

I'm fuckin' scared bro. Hella scared.
Terrified even. ( ^_^)

Was a 3k4 zerg master on EU before reset, now just made one game, don't feel to play anymore.
I cannot agree with you... the ladder is a ladder, you still want to get the best stats possible even if you know that you should just practice, that's just being a man in a society. In SC/BW or Wc3, it was way easier: you just had to create a secret account and train on it, not caring about the stats, then stomprolling on your main. In SC2, everything is made in a way that each game you launch, except custom, are 100% competitiv, there is not way to practice with stranger, and no way to practice at all when you have no mate with good enough 1v1 level to match you.
At some point, when you know you can loose every game if you are not playing carefully (which is 3k3-3k4 master prereset for me) then you stress because you know how thin the distance between winning and loosing is each time you push the start button.

Played a lot of teammatches in sc2 and kept away from 1v1 because I somehow felt that the pressure was too high. It is kind of silly, but I couldn't get rid of it.
I watch a lot of tournaments and therefore have a little passion for 1v1, so yesterday I finally did my placement matches thinking to hell with the pressure and just did my best.
I made a lot of mistakes, but somehow managed to win them all and get placed in diamond league.
I am still a bit anxious when playing and I always think that I am getting dt or banshee rushed even when my scouting is good. Overall though I think the pressure will wear off over time when I play enough games. So to all of you people holding back I will second the ops oppinion and tell you to just start laddering.

Hey don't worry about demotion, because unlike real life, your always rewarded for your wins in this game. If you do get demoted, you'll be back in no time.
There's jobs where there's no demotion, just firing. And jobs where there's no promotion, just glass ceilings.
So in this game where demotion and promotion occur instantaneously with our triumphs and defeats, just know when your demoted you have the chance to move up. Life at the top is probably boring, you have nothing to look forward to. The struggle before the goals, is the reason achieving them feels so damn good.
