As uncovered recently in a supposedly leaked email, there is evidence to suggest the higgs boson (God particle) may have been uncovered with use of the large hadron collider.
A leaked internal memo from four scientists at the Large Hadron Collider, the enormous particle accelerator that spans the border of Switzerland and France, said an experiment there may have finally recorded the existence of the long sought-after Higgs boson. Scientists believe that the hypothetical particle — the last one still undiscovered in the standard model of physics — plays a very special role in the universe, by imbuing all other particles with mass, making reality as we know it possible. Source
I find this such a fascinating idea, and am really interested in how it could tie together a unified theory of everything. This is such an exciting time for physics, which has been moving slowly in recent times due to holes in our conventional models.
What are TL's thoughts on this? |

| Sounds like mere rumors at this point. If it's true, it's a huge discovery. :} |

As stated above, it hasn't been officially confirmed. We should wait until we get some more substantial confirmation from the scientists themselves.
However, if it is true, Yay!Last edit: 2011-04-25 21:13:48 |

I call BS. My friend working at CERN doesn't seem to think so, and he works on the data analysis end of things. I don't think that enough collisions have occurred yet to generate sufficient statistics to say anything about such high energy particles being generated.
Personally, I hope they don't find the Higgs as it would be indicative of much deeper issues in particle physics. It would certainly be the death knell of the standard model, and I think few would miss it. Also, "God particle" is the worst name ever. |

Doesn't mean it's not useful. You don't have to understand all the science to benefit from it. Keep an open mind at leastLast edit: 2011-04-25 21:20:07 |

didn't mean to come off as so negative about it, I'm sure it's a good thing but it's really hard to get enthusiastic about these things cause they are incredibly abstract. |

False.
My wife works for one of the LHC experiments and if there would've been evidence to suggest the Higgs boson had been found, I would have heard about it.
Additionally, finding the Higgs boson isn't a matter of producing it and then saying "aha, there it is!". The particle will decay in a way that is slightly different from all the other possible processes that can occur and only the decay products are measurable. However, since the amount of colissions is so high and the chance to produce a Higgs boson is so low (if it exists), it will take a long time before there is enough statistical certainty to claim a discovery.
Think of it as rolling a weighted die. If you just roll 3 times, you can't say whether the die is pure and the results were just a matter of luck or whether it's weighted. You need to roll many more times to get a decent level of certainty. And in the case of the search for Higgs, the equivalent die is weighted in such a minor way that it only produces a very small deviation from what you'd expect.
It's not going to be found for at least a year. And after that it will take even longer before suspicions of a discovery can be backed up with enough statistics to actually proclaim the discovery. |

if that's true then...cool! finally!
but tbh i still don't believe they have the evidence they need to definitely be sure that they uncovered it |

What are you talking about? Particle physics are definitely not fully described by the Standard Modell. There are already known holes in this theory. There are also further models that have been discussed that extend the Standard Model. Theories don't "die", even if they are extended. They only get limitations. The best example are Newton's Laws. They still work very well for most daily calculations, just not at high velocities ( and and extreme gravitational forces ). |

It's a biased sample though. People with an interest in particle physics are more inclined to open the thread and reply (especially since the claim in the TS is false). |

Elaborate on how this is relevant to the topic please?

Well the poem is about how people discuss at length/talk about tediously about an elephant which no one has seen, so thre u go |

The poem is about how often in theological (religious) arguments, the whole discourse is over something that neither side has seen or can prove exists.
Theoretical physics is pretty much all about said 'Elephant'. |

Are you seriously trying to equate physics to theology? |

Ah so it's about god?
.. ..
Afaik the higgs boson is called the god particle for this reason, it's assumed to exist because we/physicians have deemed it essential for the universe to exist as is. |
