Hi guys, I just bought a laptop from a friend of a friend. So at home I have wireless network and with my old laptop i had no problems with it, i was able to connect to the internet fine. With the laptop i just bought I am able to connect to the wireless network with status:Connected and signal strength:Excelent. When i open up my browser, it says this webpage is not available...it also says. The server at www.google.com cant be found, because the DNS lookup failed. DNS is the web service that translate a website's name to its internet address. This error is most often caused by having no connection to the internet or a misconfigured network. it can also be caused by an unresponsive DNS server or a firewall preventing google chrome from accessing the network.
If anyone can help me with this, it is highly appreciated. Thank you TLers! |

| Check your wireless network settings, make sure DNS is set to auto configure under TCP/IP properties, or manually set it to Google DNS (8.8.8.8). |

| What operating system are you using? I'll go ahead and outline how to do this on Windows 7. Control Panel -> Network and Sharing Center -> Change Adapter Settings -> Right click Local Area Connecting and go to Properties -> Highlight Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) (and make sure it is check marked) and click Properties -> you should have Obtain an IP address automatically checked and Obtain DNS server address automatically checked (or use Google DNS as Rich said). For XP it's slightly different:
Control Panel -> Network and Internet Connections -> Network Connections -> Right click Local Area Connection and click properties -> Highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and then click Properties -> Make sure Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically are selected. |

| be happy you live in the US, if you lived in asia, you would be having this problem because there are no more IP addresses left there. (on IPv4) Slightly off topic, but considering our government has done literally nothing to help develop IPv6, the system to replace IPv4, I feel a responsibility to inform the general public that the interwebs are filling up fast and we need to do something about it. |

Why does everyone use Google's DNS servers? Even for static IP settings.

| Google's DNS servers are pretty fast. However, for some people (like me) regular ISP DNS is faster. There was an article somewhere about how using public DNS servers could drastically slow down your access speeds to data centers. |

| Have you tried using a different browser? Perhaps you have a proxy set up in Chrome. |

Because ISPs have a history of providing unreliable servers or returning bogus results for non-existing domains. |

Did you have to change anything or were the options already checked properly?
edit - If they were indeed checked appropriately already, try what R1CH suggested and set the DNS to Google (8.8.8.8) and let us know if that helped.Last edit: 2011-05-04 12:15:14 |

Try flushing your DNS cache:
Start -> Accessories -> Command Prompt -> type in 'ipconfig /flushdns' without the quotation marks and hit enter.
With either the Assign automatically options checked as previously done OR with the Google DNS server in place, try opening up a page again. |

Huh, didn't think of that. This will probably fix it if it is indeed DNS related. |
