Fix to Xsplit FPS/performance drop when streaming.

Use Dxtory to capture, Xsplit to encode.

Spent days trying to find a fix, finally resorted to this. Bought Dxtory, figured even if i don't stream much, i'd much rather spend a few £££ to finally see the back end of this issue that's been driving me mad since last week. You can give the Dxtory trial a go first, it cost me roughly £27.00 to buy, about $45.

No FPS drop with Dxtory, and as good as quality as i can hope for on 1mb upload (don't even think there's much if any difference between using Dxtory/Xsplit to capture). Streams look pretty good and i can't even tell im streaming.

Note: You cannot stream your desktop with Dxtory, only DirectX/OpenGL applications. However, you can use Xsplits 'scenes' and in-built screen region to easily switch to desktop streaming if need be.

Specs:
i7 950 @ 3.60Ghz
ATi 6950 2048Mb
6GB Ram
120GB SSD
1TB HD
10Mb Download
1Mb Upload

Xsplit:
Quality: 10
Bitrate: 900kbps
Audio: 64kbps
Resolution: 1088x612/960x540
Frame Rate: 30fps

Yeah, bug with the software and certain PC's/hardware. Not with Dxtory though.

All methods that use GDI screen capture (xsplit/vhscrcap/scfh) will cause some lag regardless of PC specs.

Nothing compared to Xsplits capturing, at least with my hardware and lots of others. Seems to be some kind of clash in the programming somewhere along the line. Dxtory however has none of that, im streaming with 80-90 FPS, can't even tell im streaming, which is more than i can say for all the other capture software + FME + Xsplit combinations. Even SCFH DS caused performance issues. But Dxtory + FME seems to be the sweet spot for me.

Pretty good for a 1Mb upload IMO.

Another thing, if you want to stream your desktop you can just as easily do that as well as capturing in-game with Dxtory. Simply open another 'scene' in Xsplit and use the Xsplit screen region to capture desktop activities. It's only in-game Xsplit's screen region kills hardware. So you have the best of both worlds.

Another satisfied Dxtory user . Now you can see that Dxtory is clearly superior to other screen capture programs.

So basically you're using Xsplits Scene sources to get Dxtory's video output? I thought about that but didn't find the feature till you mentioned it :D. I've been looking for a FME alternative because I'm not satisfied with what VP6 can offer with limited bandwidth.

Yeah, credit to you for making me aware of this program! Xsplit + Dxtory works way better than FME, at least FME 3.2 that is. Let me know how you get on.

Here are my results on my testing.

I chose to use a FPS game to determine the quality because it is simply the best way to benchmark it. I roughly replicated my actions in both videos to make it comparable.

Dxtory + Xsplit (x264):
http://www.justin.tv/bingobeaver/b/285199895

As you can see it still suffers from what I mentioned in some threads before, which means that if bandwidth is the bottleneck in your x264/h264 stream, you'll most likely see a quality drop instead of dropping frames.

As a bonus I don't have to use VAC (Virtual Audio Cable) to create my own stereo mixer anymore (USB headsets and stereo mix doesn't work well together).

I can, however, conclude from my past testings that it is far superior than FME's h264 (x264 or h264, call it whatever you like)

Dxtory + FME 2.5 (VP6)
http://www.justin.tv/bingobeaver/b/285200050

Here you can see the quality staying at the same level throughout the video (more or less ) BUT with dropped frames (choppyness)... although I believe FME isn't performing at its 100%.

This same principle goes for both cases: The higher the bitrate is, the better the quality you get. They just handle the framrate/quality in another way.

Also please remember that this is for FPS games where there's a lot of motion unlike RTS games because I barely get any frame drops or major quality loss in RTS games, but this is just to demonstrate what the difference is.

So in conclusion. Xsplit is an excellent broadcast program if you don't use its own screen capture program but it lacks a better codec to achieve good quality.. or maybe it's just my bandwidth :D. FME 2.5 can really good as well but it requires a really good computer along with a big upload in order to stream in full HD HQ assuming you're using VP6 since h264 is awful for FME.

Good analysis Steverman. Also, i can't tell much difference between your two tests. Is it possible these streaming sites hold us back on bit-rate/quality until we pay a subscription?

Pay attention to the huge pixelation in the first video when there's a lot of motion. Full screen helps a lot if you didn't already do that :D.

So, is there a guide somewhere for how to set up Dxtory with Xsplit? Or is it fairly self-explanatory?

Download and install Dxtory. Open it, the tabs are pretty self explanatory. Simply adjust your input size/FPS to your desired setting. Once that's all setup in Dxtory, minimize, open Xsplit, click 'File > Add Camera > Dxtory (1/2/3/4 - whichever you have setup). Now Dxtory will capture your in game footage. Once in-game, press F12 and Dxtory will begin capturing. Also, make sure to set Dxtory to 'Direct Show Output'.

Thank ya very much :D I'll have to give this a try. Xsplit by itself streams for me fine so far on stuff like Portal 2, but I've been having a lot of lag/chop issues when running Crysis 2 (game runs fine, stream looks terrible in multiple settings and bitrates)
