At this point he's been in solitary for longer than he was on the outside.
Any habitus that have formed, have been broken.
I'm disturbed that the prison system allows this to be done to people. Even an animal wouldn't be treated this poorly.
Hollow out a city sized compound underground, line it with 2 feet of steel, and toss every inmate in the country down. Pump in fresh air and electricity for them to have UV light to grow their own food, and let them live the way they want. Hahaha.
"Victory needs no explanation; defeat allows none."
Isn't it illegal to treat some one like that. It sounds like a story from the dark ages. Made me think of the Chess Player by Stefan Zweig.

i dont know what solitary convection exactly is but it seems pretty inhumane, the guy obviously is nuts and needs treatment, you cant just lock him up and try to forget him.
edit: the rules cant be applied 1:1 to other prisons they give a general idea of what is unacceptable, and what isnt.
Those rules are intended for prisoners of war, not hardened criminals.
edit: you admit it doesn't apply to civilian prisons, so whats your point? Those rules aren't what is generally unacceptable, they are what is unacceptable when detaining people in relation to a war, your point is in fact totally irrelevant to the discussion.

However, in an interview before he died, the publisher, Robert Laffont, admitted that the book was originally submitted to him as a novel. Laffont specialised in real-life adventures, and persuaded Charrière to release it as if it were an autobiography. "

Triple homicide is nothing to take lightly but solitary confinement for 28 years? That's pretty insane. However, I do understand that the warden had to take necessary steps to ensure that no more fatalities occured at the hands of this guy. Tough choice but something I understand. Still, I feel some pity for him having to live all alone for 28 years. I can't even fathom what that would do to one's mind.

Some of the responses in this thread are pretty disgusting. I can't believe doing something like this is even legal, this is almost to the levels of torture, for 28 years, what the fuck man.
Prisons like this would be better for the world.
Prison isnt supposed to be about purely punishment, what is wrong with people?
I can't understand anyone who thinks his treatment for so long is perfectly justified. He did kill 3 people which is horrible, but putting him on solitary with the worst conditions for over 28 years is beyond my grasp.

This seems to be a lot worse than the death penalty.... torturing someone like this for 28 years might as well be him living in hell. The laws are ridiculous. To see people defending not having the death penalty and then seeing shit like this is so hypocritical. He would've been better off dead, and it would've cost a hell of a lot less for taxpayer's. He killed these 3 people without a doubt, so why not kill this man instead of making him go through that? If you see logic in what he went through, then you are truly a delusional human being.

Sometimes i wonder, is sentencing him to suffer his all his life is really justice? I guess i understand people saying "yeah he deserved it" but still it appears we are no better than him with that kind of reactions.

He then goes on to murder a prison guard? His isolation is definitely justified.
How is it worse to kill a prison guard than another inmate? The face that the people in charge of the prison think so as well sickens me.

If it was just to keep other inmates/guards safe why wouldn't they just give him acces to books etc?

You are assuming the prison guard was an angel. For all you know the guard might have tried to rape him...
"Don't believe in you who believes in me, don't believe in me who believes in you, believe in you...who believes in yourself!"
obviously, there's no way to know if the guy's telling the truth, but if he's telling the truth about how his cellmate was trying to kill him, then at least he killed the cellmate before he was killed.
i think it's something anyone in his situation would have done if that were true. when you're about to get killed and the prison guards aren't listening to your pleas, then obviously your life is going to come first than adhering to the legal system, because what use is the legal system if you're already dead?
what i find detestable is that he killed the prison guard. from what i've read, he doesn't mention why he killed the prison guard.
murdering an innocent person is absolutely inexcusable but in the case of his cellmate who was trying to kill him for no reason (assuming), i will say that is certainly excusable. the problem, would be that there's almost no way to prove he was trying to kill you by the time you killed him. but at least you're alive....

Read A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickinson for a fictional perspective on solitary confinement and because it's a great book anyways (it's not mainly about prison but that does play a large role).
Read John Grisham's non-fictional acocunt of Ron Williamson in The Innocent Man
Come back and tell me that solitary confinement when you're being harassed by guards and who knows what else (I didn't read the pdf, but I'm against the torture anyway) for even ten years (Ron Williamson) is okay. Yes ten measly years. That book came with some pictures and when he was 50, he was in a wheelchair and looked like a 90 year old who suffered some debilitating disease such as polio. This was largely due to the mental torment he endured (as well as his alcoholism and other problems before/during prison).
It's not that the crimes this man, Silverstein, committed weren't heinous, but prison's purpose is not torture, just punishment(yes plus rehab, but little needs to be said there). Prison should not be torture for various reasons, not least of which is creating criminals out of the prison staff who are people originally intended to protect society from crime. Carrying out torture, for any reason, is not and never will be some "noble sacrifice of self" for the good of others. It is simply a means to create a downward spiral which is almost exponentially more difficult to reverse over time. I'll hold out hope that "social revolutions" can fix such problems, but I'm more hopeful that such revolutions won't be needed if people can improve without getting to a massive breaking point.
None of this is to say that I believe the man is necessarily rehabilitated. While not having read the full account, by definition it can be and probably to some extent is biased. But as I said, torture is wrong at the least because the person carrying it out will for lack of a better expression, "become evil." Then there are the obvious humanitarian concerns about the tortured.
If you're interested in a person who is genuinely rehabilitated, read about this man, Wilbert Rideau. Of course some people still doubt but whatever, I simply made up my mind in the majority after listening to his interview on NPR's Fresh Air with Terry Gross, which you can look up yourself (it's 4:30 a.m.; I need to wrap this up)
