That was a really really great first "you know nothing". Not sure I like the way Jon's storyline is changing but Ygritte is definitely great so far.
Pyat Pree's magic hax were too overblown for my taste, but meh that storyline was boring in the books so anything to spice it up a bit.
Other than that, another entertaining episode though I think they could have ramped up the doubt/suspense re: bran/rickon. I think most viewers twigged the fake out already. |

Maybe if they didn't mention the 2 orphans from winterfell earlier in the episode.. -I get that Dany's parts are boring as fuck in books 2-4 (and 5 imo, but many like that) so they wanted to spice shit up, but they are wasting sooo much fucking screen time on introducing yet another pointless power struggle instead of showing the ones that are actually meaningful and being ignored/underdeveloped. Just like with the Winterfell scene, the show lost all its subtlety and intrigue (which the first season was able to convey very well from the books) and thats one of the things that made the books so great. They could have saved 30 minutes and just had her go to the House of the Undying seeking support like she did from all the other places in Qarth. It feels more like a fanfic than an adaptation.
I don't really mind alterations that they made with TV Jon, Ygritte is a good actress and is really good at tempting him, where in the book he caved in on his oath to fast for my tastes. I'm pretty sure they want to flesh out his path to Mance and his relationship with Ygritte more so we get more Jon on TV. I think the way they will salvage that Qhorin and desertion will go something like: They captured Qhorin, Jon gets in a cell with him, he makes Jon kill him so he can prove him self as a turncloak, so not so different form the books, except we get more of Ygritte relationship.
I found the way GRR handled Jamie's redemption to easy, sure he has done some foul things, but compared to others in the series he is kind of a sweetheart that just wants to protect his family, where they know how likeable Nikolai is so they are trying to make us despise him more before we need to start loving him. It is all in my opinion a setup fro AFfC where we get that contrast between him and Cersei , they are trying to show him as ruthless as possible and her as caring so they can turn it up and get a better reaction.
It was implied that warlocks had some kind of powers, and I don't mind making Pyat a badass , if only to show us that magic is still there and that Malisandre is not the only one that can use it. This new subplot of Xaro and Pyat taking control of Qarth makes for way better television than Dany just going to House of Undying for the sake of going there and just leaving after that without any kind of meaningful resolution. Also the council of the 13 was superbly done and I loved the scene a lot.
Arya and Tywin relationship is amazing to me, I didn't care for the lord she was serving in the books at all, and I don't really think Tywin is out of character, if she didn't have the power of Jaquen behind her she would be absolutley harmless and he could know who she was and still act the way he is acting around her, since he thinks he is in absolute control of her, she cannot escape, she can't really send any messages and can't harm him in any way. He struck me as a calculated man who enjoys playing with people, and that's just what he is doing (I think that's why he did what he did with Tyrion's whore , both of them).
The Bran/Rickon thing was far too obvious? Well no shit, I don't know about you, but I didn't buy it for a second in the books, and I don't buy it here, they did it this way so TV watchers can feel good when they get it right the next episode, and I find that awesome. |

Reading the non-spoiler thread, someone proposed Cat might maim Jaime.
Since Vargo Hoat is not casted, and Alton Frey already dead so wont participate in Jaime's real escape, could it be they make Cat take Jaime's arm?
I mean i know it's not the time yet, but it wont make sense to free him now, since Cat does not know about Bran and Rickon's fake deaths, and has no reason to free Jaime a few hours after his attempted escape and the Karstarks asking for his head.
What are they gonna do? Make it a lame cliffhanger, where Cat just threatens him after all? |

Whyyyy do they keep fucking with my fav chars....first Stannis and now Jamie -_-. I don't care about changes to storyline...like all the Quarth crap going on. What annoys me is when they make people do stuff completely out of character. The best things about the books are the characters...why change them? Makes me a sad panda  |

At the end of the day, when Jamie starts redeeming himself a little, nobody is going to give a shit about him killing his cousin. He's done a lot worse than that and openly admits it. He is pretty evil though, questioning old honourable Neds honour, striking the nerve that would hit Catelyn the hardest. I love the things he says to Brienne too.
The Cersei scene I found a lot stranger. In the book you hate Joff but you hate Cersei a lot more (I did anyway). She's created this monster and has no capacity to control him yet she coddles and protects him, not truly seeing what he is. The show seems like it is dumping all the evil on Joffery. Why can't we hate them both? |

| I enjoyed this episode immensely. I appreciate the changes. Honestly if you tried to adapt the characters exactly as they were from the books the TV show might be pretty boring. Remember GRRM essentially signs off on most of these changes and in several interviews has recommended them to fit the TV style. |

Love the changes with Daenerys, i wasn't interested at all in her in the books, the only fun thing was the house of the undying. Now we get more madness from them and less boringness.
Jon's change i would be okay with if it wasn't for the plothole with Qhorin =/
Rick and Bran not dead was too obvious i think, also no Reek, no Meera and Jojen - don't like it that much. Also Theon seems more evil and mad as in the books.

I'm most worried about the changes they are making to Jon Snow's story. Maybe they will have him escape the wildlings and meet back up with Qhorin and then go back over on his orders. Then there is the business with Robb falling for the sassy foreign field medic who is secretly a princess (did I hear that right int he show?). That one takes me out of the story a bit because it seems to be really out of place in the GoT world. I feel like there are a number of situations in the show like this where they are changing things and characters just to change them when the original story would have worked out well. Jamie is a kinslayer now? Tywin the friendly grandpa type?
On the other hand there is Dany and I'm glad they are changing some pieces of her story around. She was incredibly dull for me to read through in the books so why not spice up her story line a bit. She does seem more whiny and petulant in the show than I remember but maybe that's because the book is showing things through her perspective and the TV show is just showing how she is acting.
The business with orphan boys being burned in place of Bran and Rickon was made too obvious I think. |

I am reading "A Dance with Dragons" right now, and it's getting reaaaly tiring how many story lines Mr. Martin opens, and how few he closes. Currently stuck at some chapter about "The Lost Lord". I just don't have the willpower to keep on reading

A lot of people say this, but it really isn't true according to interviews where he has been asked about it. GRRM doesn't even see many of the episodes until they are completed. He has offered himself as a resource, but it is Dan and David who have the final say on what goes even if George hates the change. Now he hasn't said that he hates any of the changes, but don't assume that he agrees with them either. | I do like the changes they made in this episode. For example the 2 burned miller boys theon presented in winterfell was okay, in the books it was just two very very decayed and ugly heads, I don't think they could have shown that on the show. |
