Man, I only read through book 2 and a bit of book 3 and I just have to come in here to ask a question. They cut out so much shit from this season that I loved from the books and it's actually making me a bit angry. I never read book one because I'm a lazy fuck and I heard that Season 1 was basically 100% on par with the book so I just skipped it and went right into book 2. I'm feeling like I was lied to now after watching this season?

The season itself was great I suppose, but still. I feel so cheated ;_;

Season one is like 95% true to the book, what u lost are some dreams and inner monologues, season two is like 65%ish true to the 2nd book

Edit: LOL never-mind wrong thread. Haha sorry stork at first I was like "wtf retard talking about books" and then it's like "wtf everyone retarded" and then I'm like "ohhhh wait I'm retarded".

So yeah, I don't agree I like Dany's story more than the other ones, except perhaps Jon Snow's. They're more important than the turmoil of Westoros, imo. As well as more interesting.

I'm confused. Have Robb and Catelyn even heard about Bran and Rickon's 'deaths' yet?

in the show? no since there were no ravens to carry the news, while in the books that was the main reason catelyn actually decided to set free Jamie... it makes that story a lot more stupid :/

btw is anyone else feeling a bit disappointed that jaqen keeps talking about red god when in the book it was one of many faces? he makes it seem like faceless men are basically servants of the red god

Probably to keep things simple. Jaqen did mention the red god in the books too, after all.

Another thing that confused me: Why do Robb and Not-Jeyne speak to the Seven in their marriage vows? The religion of the north is that of the old gods, isn't it? Or did I miss something here?

Not exclusively, many of the northeners worship the seven or both old and new gods, countless refferences are made to this, Robb getting married like that is nothing extra, i found it stranger that Lord Karstark appears to be worshippin the 7, and the Karstarks are from almost as North as the Wall

Really underwhelmed with the HotU scenes. and Xaro and Qarth... Well, the whole Dany plotline.

Sucks that Ghost didn't play a part in killing the Halfhand. Ygritte is adorable though. :D

Can't wait for Season 3 even though they strayed far from the books. Hopefully they can get their shit together for s3.

Help me out with something here:

I think to recall that either Joeff's Heartsbane or Jamie's Oathkeeper were newly made Valyrian steel blades. New in that the steel was available, but they did forge a new sword from it.

Does that mean that making valyrian steel is a lost art, but forging it is still possible in present Westeros?

And if that is true Xaro was probably the richest man in Quarth after all. Imagine all the swords you could make from that varyrian steel safe door!

they were both made from the Starks greatsword (Ned's blade), I'm not entirely sure how it was done but the guy that made them said that it was very difficult and had real trouble with even colouring the blades
I'd say it's far easier to reforge a sword into 2 swords than to make swords from a door, I'm not an expert on it tho :D

Basically, yes. Though, as far as I can remember, Xaros says that the door is made out of "Valyrian stone" or something like that, which does not exist in the novels. But yeah, it would be kinda funny if he could become the richest guy around by selling the door to his vault. :D

Was this from the show? I thought Heartsbane was the steel from House Tarly and Joffrey's one was Widow's wail?

And yes, both swords were made from the steel from Ice (Ned's sword). I think its because you can rework valyrian steel, but creating the metal needs to be bound with magic.

I'm curious how they plan to bring back Xaro Xhoan Doxas later when they locked him up in his vault

I'm more disappointed in Jaqen's use of proper pronouns .

Yea, you're right about Heartsbane. Another artistic liberty the writers took. I guess they liked the name Heartsbane better and will maybe strip Tarly of his Valyrian sword.

They don't need to bring Xaro back at all.

Now that you say it I think they mixed the sword names up in the show. When Joeffrey asked Sansa to kiss his sword in ep09 doesn't he say he named it Heartsbane?

Alright so now they only need to inconspiciously carry a 5 ton steel door out of quarth an be set forever!

Yeah it was way different.

I really liked the throne room with the ruined roof and the snow, etc. Something about that scene was just... well, I liked it. But the last part was just bad, they had him do mirror images or whatever you'd call it before and here he just gets burned asap, lol, felt so anticlimactic.

i don't think he died.. or at least he's still alive in the books

yes but that is not the sword made from valyrian steel
Illyn Payne still holds Ice at that moment, it is Tywin who orders 2 swords to be made from it after he comes to King's landing

Jaqen used it once in the books after he was saved by the fire but it seems they've merged the religions as used the name in situations that would not be appropriate for book Jaqen. Hopefully they change back later and had simply didn't want to introduce two religions in the same season.

While not given any formal crafting name, the Valyrian roads are likely creating out of "Valyrian stone" which explains how the roads have never marred.

In the show Joffrey named his sword Hearteater, not Heartsbane.

Also, XXD said that his vault door was made out of Valyrian Stone, not steel. Easy mistake to make because Valyrian stone doesn't exist in the books.

The writer's didn't change it. The sword Joffrey has that he makes Sansa kiss was Hearteater. It wasn't Valyrian steel. He doesn't get Widow's Wail till after the Blackwater as a gift from Tywin.
I'm going to sleep, let me get some of that carpet.

The sword Joffrey had for the battle of the blackwater, Heartsbane/Hearteater, was not one of the Valyrian swords reforged from Ice. That was Widow's Wail. Heart<variable> was just a castle steel quality sword with a fancy hilt and pommel. The one belonging to house Tarly however is Valyrian steel, but again; that is a different sword and the show just changed some names.

Valyrian stone is never named as such in the books but it does exist. That, much like their steel, their stone and masonry work was of a far greater quality than anyone else has invented is mentioned many times. The fortress of Dragonstone, the old dragon roads connecting major cities of Essos, etc. are all mentioned for their unbelievable strength and/or precise craftsmanship compared to other stone with the only possible exceptions being Storm's End and The Wall; which are powerfully spell warded/constructed. *and of course the wall is ice*

Valyrian steel cannot be smelted anymore, at least until/unless someone rediscovers it now that dragons are back as it seems implied that dragon fire is the lost key to it, but it can be reforged with a very good castle forge and a good master smith. I think it was in book 1 that those requisites were mentioned and it was called possible but rarely performed and then book 3 where it was done with Ice to make Widow's Wail and Oathkeeper.

There is a possible contradiction with regard to maesters who have studied the higher mysteries though. Either they are all also good smiths or they don't actually forge that link themselves.

forging the link is metaphorical, it means preparing and passing the exam in that field, they obviously can have a smith in Oldtown who can work Valyrian steel for the Citadel.
