Who's being a dick? I've already told you what you need. More knowledge of what you're getting and what it can do for you, and how to do it. A good BIOS. Reliable brands. Even at the Intel Retail Edge price, it's only better price/performance than an i5 rig if you know what it's going to help with and need it to help with those things.

I never refused to admit anything. If you want to drag that whole conversation public, I'll be happy to copy/paste it in here. Otherwise, you'd do best to leave it to vague references like I did. I won't take kindly to assertations that it went differently than it did.

What benefit do you think you're going to get, for what purposes, from X79, and how do you intend to get them? If you're building on that platform, based on your extensive knowledge and superior Geek Squad training, you certainly shouldn't need advice from some under-informed dick, right?

I said you are a dick because of the way you conduct yourself. Our entire PM log is you ranging from different levels of assholery. I'm here asking a question because I don't know the answer and am not pretending I do. If you can't give help without being a condescending prick about things then why bother?

We tap danced around and came to an agreement that the 200$ thing wasn't that bad yet you threw in some stipulation about if they knew there was an issue. You know there is an issue when your shit doesn't work. If it is slow or doesn't turn on you know there is an issue. Any idiot can figure that out its not hard. I didn't care to continue arguing over a negligable point.

I know some geeksquad people are dumb, and I never once said that I know everything, hence why I am here asking a question I wasn't quite sure how to google. You proceed to say that I shouldn't be building the PC because I am not going to get the fullest out of it. I already knew I wasn't, but when the price is less than an i5-2500k for me why the fuck would I downgrade? On top of that it is more future proof than an i5-2500k. How else can I gain knowledge except by asking questions to those who know more than I do?

Then in your next post you basically call me an idiot because I didn't know Asus created Asrock 15 years ago. It's funny, last time I checked a board working better was defined by how it performed, not who made it. My Asus was defective, my Asrock was not. It even OC'd my Phenom II to 4ghz on air when the Asus couldn't be stable past 3.8 or 3.9. So yes, Asrock was better in this case.

Oh and to the other guy, I should of explained a bit better. I was referring specifically to bestbuy computer repair costs not being as bad as most people think. There prices on video cards still kind of sucks, even with the discount.

^Okay, three pages is far enough to take a discussion/argument/whatever. This is the simple questions thread and obviously this was not or is no longer a simple question.

Rebirth, ask in the Computer Build resource thread (where you probably should have asked this to begin with) if you want other opinions.

And JH, be nice :/

The conversation, spoilered for length. Don't fucking misrepresent me to call me an asshole, you self righteous prick, I can be an asshole without help.

+ Show Spoiler +

If I was going to call you an idiot, I'd damn well call you an idiot.

And at what point did I fail to give you advice? I gave you advice in my FIRST response, which you still seem to have not acknowledged. I told you that if they don't advertise that clock, unless the BIOS was designed by an incompetent, you should just have to manually set the clocks.

When you pay that much more for RAM and motherboard, even buying budget shit, by the way, it doesn't end up costing less. All I asked was whether you'd actually USE the thing, because let's face it, if I get half off on a Ferarri, when I never go above the speed limit, I've still spent more money than I needed to.

Edit: @Toast, I am being nice. Really. I must have edited out at least 70% of what I thought about saying before posting.

That's even worse -_- Best Buy service prices are absolutely horrendous unless they cut everything in half or more.

For example, how much does Best Buy charge to convert old media into digital copies (on a HDD or some other). Isn't it like $40 each file or something like that? Wal Mart charges $2 each file.

$200 to back up your HDD?

There should be a row of pins, usually next to the SATA ports on the motherboard. Check the manual if you can't find them.

You'd feel sillier if you'd done something like disassemble your GPUs for cleaning and re-pasting and forgetting to plug in the PCIE connectors to them, or the SLI bridge afterwards, and were me. I've done both.

Okay well an update to my computer building endeavors. After 5 hours of troubleshooting I got my computer to boot up. Everything works but the monitor and CPU fan. The monitor doesn't seem to be recognized and the CPU fan is not moving for some reason. Any thoughts? I hope I didn't already damage my CPU

Is the CPU cooler attached to the right pins on the motherboard? Is the monitor attached to the motherboard, or the GPU? Did you connect the PCIE cables to the GPU? Did you get POST beeps?

Yes I think the CPU Stock Cooler is attached correctly. It made some clicks after I pressed it into the mother board. My monitor is attatched to the motherboard, the GPU didn't seem to have any ports for some reason. Yes I did attach my PCI-E cables to the GPU. And yes I got one short beep after turning on my computer.

Edit:
Okay well this is weird. After trying it once more, the CPU fan now works. Though the monitor still shows no display. However, the CPU fan is make a really loud noise. I think it's hitting my wire for the CPU fan, though I'm not completely sure. The wire is like already stuck to the CPU fan so I can't adjust it really.

Sounds like the wire is in the fan, yeah, try loosening it in the clips, it should slide. Be firm but gentle. Your GPU should have ports, and if it's plugged in, the integrated graphics should be disabled, which is why your monitor isn't getting shit. How do you figure your GPU doesn't have ports? Did you remember to take off the back panel covers?

Yeah I double checked and manually spun the CPU fan, it hits one of my wires ever so slightly. I'll re-adjust that in the morning since my eyes are starting to shut on me. Yes I took out those things in the back so my GPU's ports are shown in the back of my case.

This is my monitor I'm trying to use:
http://www.amazon.com/Acer-X183H-18-5-Inch-LCD-Monitor/dp/B001ER6CCI?tag=tealiq-20

This is the GPU I just bought:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150561&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-Video%20Cards-_-XFX-_-14150561&AID=10440897&PID=3938566&SID=

The monitor has a blue plug (sorry don't know the technical name), while the GPU has ports that are not only larger than what my monitor uses, but also it's not really the right shape.

I'd expect your GPU came with a VGA-DVI adapter that would let you connect the display to the GPU. If not, you can buy one cheap.

You mean DVI to VGA.

There's a pretty big difference, VGA to DVI adapters are pretty expensive and I don't want him getting confused.

Anyway, the Amazon tech specs don't specify, but I suspect the monitor supports DVI but just doesn't have a cable. Would make a lot more sense to invest in one as you will get clearer crisper images among other benefits.

I want to upgrade my monitor, but my budget is tight as is at the moment. So I pretty much have to settle down with my current monitor now.

So would something like this work?

Oh jeez I read Toast's post wrong after the adapter part. Good sign I should go to sleep now. Okay that sounds a lot more simpler. Thanks for the help everyone, hopefully my monitor will work and I can get my computer up and going tomorrow =)

I hate to bump a thread especially if I was the last one to post, but I ran into another problem. I got everything working, and attempted to install Windows 7 Home Premium onto my computer. It installed and when I attempted to enter in my product key, it said it was invalid. I realized that the OS I had bought off craigslist was actually an upgrade for Windows Vista or XP. So basically my question is..is it possible for me to just download Windows XP and burn it on CD discs to install and try upgrading from that? As far as I'm aware I don't think any retail stores near me sell Windows XP or Vista anymore.

Edit:
I noticed my broken computer had it's product key on the side of the case. So I'm going to download Windows XP Home Edition (as that was what the product key was for), and try upgrading from that.

Occasionally when I turn my computer on the top case fan gets stuck on something and makes obnoxious noises. This happens maybe once a week or two (built my computer ~6 months ago) and I've never been able to find anything wrong with it when I open it up to see what it is hitting and afterwards it mysteriously stops making obnoxious noises. Is it something I should be worried about or is there something simple that I'm missing that is causing the issue.

My function keys dont work the way they used to, in-game my f10 key just centers my screen around whatever i have selected instead of going to the menu like it's supposed to, in the hotkeys section it still says that f10 = menu and when i try to put in an alternative and set it as f10, it says that i just set it as ctrl+shift+R, i think that it is also not working out of game because my f5 button doesn't refresh pages any more, i'm not completely sure what my key board is, it just says Dynex on the front

Thanks♥
