Sorry, but I have one more quick question. My picture on the monitor doesn't go over the entire screen, only goes about 80-85% of the monitor. It is in the center of it, instead of taking up the whole screen.

You probably need to install video card drivers and/or than go into CCC or NCP to change the scaling.

Is this an OK motherboard for a Q9550 (No, I didn't just buy it), and will it be able to overclock decently?

Don't expect a good overclock on it since it lacks phases and mosfet heatsinks.

Not planning on buying from this site, but form what I've read that mobo is quite good for it, what do you think?

So I'm somewhat trying to start learning computer stuff, it's so complicated T_T
I'm looking at this laptop
http://www.asus.com/Notebooks/Superior_Mobility/U46SV/#specifications
and it says:
Intel® Core™ i5 2520M/2410M Processor
Intel® Core™ i3 2310M Processor

How does this work? I thought computers only had 1 processor? (and the i5 itself is duel core yes?)
as for the usage of i5 vs i7, I know that even mac book pros are putting in i7 processors, but is that somewhat overkill? Like if I'm buying a laptop for general college or average user (watching movies, taking notes, editing pictures, etc) my thought process is that the i5 going to accomplish everything anyway, and getting an i7 would only be for playing graphic intensive games. I guess what I'm trying to ask is, how much better is i7 than i5, and what circumstances would you prefer one over the other?

Edit: is the duel core considered ancient technology compared to the new quad core stuff?

These are the manufacturers specifications. It means that they sell this laptop with one of these processors (there are different models of it, you can choose the amount of RAM and you HDD as well).
Dual core CPUs are the standard for laptop CPUs, you won't need quadcore. For the stuff you described you don't even need an i5 or a dedicated graphics card imo.
If you don't want to play games etc, an i3 with integrated graphics should be enough for you.

simple question: I will be getting an i5 2500k + gtx560ti and intend on playing games @ 1920x1080 reso. What will be a good budget monitor? Is the 120Hz refresh rate worth it? I don't want to spend too much on a monitor, but at the same time I don't want my graphics to be limited by a crappy monitor.

My gf is wanting a desktop for gaming, such as sc2, skyrim ect. I think she wants to be able to play it on reasonably high graphics. She also wants something that isn't going to date terribly quickly.

So far we looking at this,
Intel Core i5-2500 3.30Ghz
ASUS P8H61-V3 H61 B3 Stepping DDR3 Motherboard
6gb 1333 RAM
1GB ATI 5670 PCI-E VGA Card, or 1GB ATI 6570 PCI-E VGA Card, or 1GB ATI 6670 PCI-E VGA Card, or 1GB ATI 6770 PCI-E VGA Card (we are unsure of which has the best value for its cost)

Trying to keep price under $1000 (this is in Australia btw, I don't think we get as much bang for our buck as they do in the US).

http://www.msy.com.au/SYSTEMS/INTEL-Pro2.pdf is the list we thinking of building up from, as the next one up in price has a few redundancies (2TB HD, 24inch screen ect that she just doesn't need).

Going with pre-built since neither of us have any clue on how to build, and I think she just wants the peace of mind of knowing that I didn't fuck anything up whilst trying to learn haha.

I'm pretty rookie when it comes to this stuff, so if anyone has any pointers at all would be much appreciated.

Cheers

just go i5 2400 and 6850 instead, that graphics card is way too poop, and also get 2x4=8gb ram

Is 8gb ram necessary? We would have no problems upgrading to 8 since ram is pretty cheap, I had just heard that that much ram is pretty redundant.
And 6850 you say? What is reason for this? (not doubting you, I'm just interested in learning more about computers so am interested for my own benefit). I guess that could work since money saved on getting 2400 could be used on that.

Thank you good sir ^^, seen you post around Tech forums a bit so help is much appreciated.

Edit: Am I going to have to upgrade the PSU for this? On the MSY table I linked I can't find anywhere to upgrade power supply..

8 gigs is by no means necessary however RAM is cheap and it is generally a good idea to obtain dual channel. The other option is 2X2gigs which makes less sense budget wise, thus 8 gigs is most commonly suggested. Again it isn't a hard rule.

The reason to get a 6850 is because an i5-anything is over weighted towards the CPU and under weighted for the GPU. Meaning that your total computers performance will not be equivalent to its dollar value. Which is pretty much what we are after to begin with.

For video gaming. X770's for AMD/ATI or (IMO) x60's for nVidia are the baseline cards one can purchase, and a x770 is no justification for an i5. If you wanted to get an x6xx card or lower you should also pick an i3 -2100 so that the build makes complete sense. I possess one such build, it runs SC2 and D3 quite well.

Ok thanks, definitely going for 8gb ram, i5 2400 and the 6850. One final question, is the motherboard I listed going to be fine for the system? I don't know how important it is, but we basically chose a base system and then upped the RAM, graphics card and choose i5 2400, so I'm just wondering if the motherboard is adequate given the rest of what we have (again I don't know anything about motherboards so if I'm talking crap just tell me).

Thanks again for the help, I wish I had done this much research before buying my own computer -.- would have picked something better than 5570 card since it is so expensive to upgrade video cards and my card seems to be holding rest of system back lol.

So I've spent a bit of time on r/buildapc (which makes my PC hardware knowledge rookie at best) and I've been looking to build my own budget computer. A question popped up in my head when I was picking the CPU I wanted which is:

Why do so many people recommend tri-core/quad-core Athlon II's for a budget computer? Don't most games only run on two cores anyway, or is that just a huge piece of outdated misinformation? I'm considering getting a Phenom II 560 but there must be reason why the higher core numbers are so popular.

Because tomshardware says its good

What you should be considering is intel G620, G840, G860, i3 2100 or i3 2120

I see no reason why an ASUS H61 would fail that system.

I'm trying to run dual monitors without doing full screen windowed mode for SC2, because when i do full screen windowed mode, my mouse still strays off to the other monitor. I am also running on a Mac.

Please help!

Thanks,
burN
