Thanks for the answer.

I bought the 6850 a while ago, and I noticed that my FPS in SC2 dropped dramatically. I could play 1v1s with the old GPU with a nice FPS, but after I got the 6850, it became unplayable. I formatted the computer and all, but no fix. So I just gave up on playing SC2 at all, until now, that my college break started, so I had to find a way to spend my free time.
Based on that, I thought it could be a 'bottleneck' issue.

Any idea in why it got worse after the GPU improvement?

Thanks (:

Well that's interesting, it indeed could be the PSU. What is the exact PSU model? I have a feeling it's a low-end one if it's a 500w unit that can only supply 450w, especially if it's old.

Well, it's a national brand, so you prolly won't know, but it's called C3tech PUF-4050S. I bought it last year.
All the forums say that it is enough to run the HD6850.

Thanks for the answers so far. ^_^

Edit: Oh, I don't know if this test is valid to check if I have enough power, but I just took out the DVD recorder to check if I get a FPS increase, but it stays exactly the same as before.

I think the C3tech PUF is a CWT PUF (pretty bad), though I didn't confirm anything more than that it's made by CWT. CWT has a terrible low-end design called PUF, so PUF-4050S sounds like it might be that.

I found a review that reveals the low quality of the PUF-4050S:
http://www.clubedohardware.com.br/artigos/Teste-da-Fonte-de-Alimentacao-C3Tech-PUF-4050S-de-500-W/1838/1

The author is Gabriel Torres (well respected), the one who does reviews for hardwaresecrets. Considering how it is built poorly, I would replace it even if you suspected it was working properly.

Hhmm Thanks SkyR for coming up with the PSU idea and Shikyo and Myrmidon for the info about it.
So I searched some reviews for the 6850 to see how much power it eats up. I got to some results that it can consume up to 268W running 3DMark. Is it really accurate?
If so, does it mean that I need a 12V rail pulling 23A? It feels like it is way too much. o_o

No, HD 6850 by itself is much less than that. It's the whole system with an HD 6850 in it, including the power supply, taking 268W from the wall in 3DMark, that would make sense.

It will vary a bit by model, but see power consumption figures for the HD 6850 by itself here:

Awesome links, man! Thanks a lot.

Doesn't that mean that my current PSU has enough power in its 12V rail?
Torres' review could push it to 12A (144W).

(I'm sorry for so many questions, but I really wanna know if a new PSU is necessary since it's pretty expensive )

No 12A is not going to be enough

so yeah if your PSU can only deliver 144w its the problem with the PSU, not sure which review you were looking at at first if you said it could deliver 450w hm

That looks exactly like the thermaltake pure power, which allso was a cwt puf (aka burn it with fire).

Anyway, it has two 12v rails that where "stable" at 12a, which is 288W. That should theoretically be enough.

I'd just get a new one before it blows up, and takes the rest of your system with it (which is a real possibility) or damages other components because it goes out of spec.

I'm looking into buying a new "pre-built" PC, this is custom made by a PC specialized store rather than some brand name from big electric store. And I'm curious on whether it's roughly worth the price, my friend claims it's overpriced but I would like another opinion.

Also I have no intention of building a PC by myself even if it would save a few penny, this PC is intended for mid-range gaming and is meant to last for a few years, in the sense that I could play new games on low settings in a few years. Specs are copy/pasted from a Finnish site but I tried to roughly translate them.

+ Show Spoiler +

If I coughed up a bit more money.

They don't include an OS.

Price is about 125% of components cost, by a rough estimate from memory of general European pricing (not looking at US prices compared to USD cost of course). This is about assuming you need a 1TB hard drive, which is priced a couple times higher than it normally is now, due to shortages caused by Thailand flooding. You probably should be able to find assembled computers for a little less than that.

Awesome thanks, I don't actually have use for the 1TB, half of that would be plenty for me so I suppose I'l wait for a while till the HDD prices go down to normal again and keep looking for better deals meanwhile.

Finnish pricing =/= European pricing. The second computer is a good deal if it's from Finland.

http://www.silentrig.com/product/1028/high-power-budget

However I'd still pick that ^ Seems higher quality all around, includes a CPU cooler and if you select 6950 instead of 560 Ti it's amazing value as they're same price there.

Oh also the first computer you had there is overpriced in my opinion and not nearly as good of a deal but still not terrible.

Thanks for the correction. I knew the Finnish pricing was higher than typical European pricing, but by how much? Maybe I underestimated the difference. I suspected it wasn't by enough that it would be impossible to find a better deal though.

Well let's take that 819€ build, from jimms.fi which is the second-best-known computer store in finland(the best-known is overpriced):
2500k 209€
ASUS P8Z68-V LE 145€
8gb 1600mhz 45€
GTX 560 Ti 209€
1TB HDD 129€
cheapest DVD RW 19.90€

So we're totaling 757 after everything but case and PSU, and I have a feeling that even if it's from an OEM store they would be worth more than 62€ total.

Of course it's possible to order for less from Germany or somesuch, but still there's reasons a person might want to order their computer from the country they live in. Btw I think that the mobo is overkill and wonder if it's a typo of LX, but it says LE.

Do motherboards consume a lot of power? If so, about how many watts?

The most power hungry components in a computer is the graphics card and processor. The rest of the components consume measly amounts that aren't significant in the big scheme of things.

It's not significant unless it's a Gigabyte BGA413 motherboard, no idea how they managed to fuck those up.

Thanks! A 250W psu would be plenty for a gaming rig with minimal parts then?

Assuming 95W CPU

If it's 250w on the 12v rail sure, if it's like 8A like I expect then no unless it's a fusion or 6450
