Okay fakesteve made me do a writeup, i was goin to stick it up on the front page but the interview should last a few more days i think! Anyway here it is.
Like any good Australian, the motto "if it aint wrasslin' crocodiles it aint worth doing" has served me well, but it seems there are a number of crocodile wrestling wannabes out there who need some inspiration, thus fakesteve the bastard is making me in his wisdom has decided to blackmail me into doing a writeup about my MSL adventure. (you dont rreeally want to see more "absolute sexiness" photos do you? Trust me, theres less clothing in the other ones, so you were warned!
okay half that stuff was from the conversation with steve so forgive me
Very long and boring, sorry folks.
Part 1:
It was about 3 weeks ago when the preliminaries for the MSL began. ( http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=22672 )Where first round i took on sin doki (was plus team zerg) where i played almost as well as i possibly could and came away with a 2:0 victory, then the 2nd round was vs silent_control. First game i messed up with a few vultures sneaking into my main to cause mayhem and a single mine blowing up all of my probes (reminiscent of the game vs goodfriend T_T) The 2nd game was domination by the terran (i played a little bad) but fortunately he probably considered it a easy win and didn't scout much causing him not to see my 2nd multi (not in the normal position) allowing me to buy enough time to get carriers and hold on. That led to the third and final deciding match to make it into the third televised round. The map was raid assault and i was most confident on this map especially vs his style. 14 mins later he typed in GG and i had set a date to once again make it to the final round of a preliminary. I had made it to this position a number of times but always failed at the final hurdle, would that happen again or would i finally take the step that has eluded me for so long?
Thus a few days past and my date was set, the 7th of February i would take on the soul teams protoss user soo[s.sir] who had advanced out of a group which has also contained luna[alive] and the former zerg wcg champion ogogo. I had practiced a lot, and decided that i hated luna, and disliked into the darkness and i liked raid assault. (mainly because the first 2 are more straight up maps then the last and that is an area i am weakest at compared to the other pros) Fortunately as my practice progressed i had a fairly solid build for ITD. Which left only luna, which i practiced on for about 60% of my practice games, but to no avail. Time passed quickly and it was soon match day.
Siva(z) (who had the first match of the day vs qoo)max (kor team) arrived at the MBC gameworld studio. We had some photos taken, got our make up on (i of course didn't need much being the wonderful stallion i am) and the rest of the time was spent making jokes about bashing up qoo)max (who by the end of it was looking a little scared) Siva and max went off somewhere and i was sitting relaxing, not having a game for another hour or so since i was the 2nd match. Then in came the camera man and told me to go out, i thinking it was some more photos went along and half way to the stage the man turned and asked me where my keyboard was. Not knowing wtf was going on i told him i was 2nd game, he responded with "no, change".... FUCK. i walk back into the room grab my gear and head out to the stage where i set up. Soo follows a while later and we wait for it all to start. Sitting there waiting for 10 mins for it to start is quite nerve racking, you have a hundred people staring at you, you have nothing to do to take your mind of things most koreans just practice their cloning non stop until it starts. I have always preferred to just look around and see whats going on and enjoy myself a bit more (better then looking at the monitor thinking about the game ahead) Anyway th eonly reason i mentioned that is because the korean interviews afterwards asked me why i looked around a lot. The crowd was a nice size, all seats taken, a fair few standing around watching, though, i noticed something strange, it seems the mighty soos reputation of being a progamer (and thus good with his hands) has made him a bit of a ladies man, for over on his side there were a disproportinate number of females sitting in support of him, my side was much more ordinary... damn it... that lucky bastard!
gogogogogogo 5....4.....Soo's many fan girls all screamed out "park jong soo fighting" 3....2....1 korean guy muttered "peter fighting" (i felt mildly embarassed),,,,1..... , it began.
Game 1: Luna, Peter @ 5, Soo @ 8.
He went 3 gate goons, i went 2 gate reaver, he had the advantage of holding my low ground and expanded and went for obs (i hate korean style do or die builds aoig;hdfgsdf i much prefer safer builds that defend vs everything) My reavers arrived and he was forced to retreat, i had 600 minerals(savign up for a nexus) and so expanded, and expanded again at the same time at the 12 mineral only. I then went to buy enough time to macro to defend any push he would do. Its going to be hard to explain the reaver attack but i dropped it everywhere at his natural (i think i dropped it down maybe 6 times?) and it got a number of kills, i then decided i had done enough and had enough production to equal or be more then his, so did a final reaver assault on his main. Dropped the reaver, selected a especially lucious probe and kaboom, a few more died, selected another one and.. and.. nothing?? wtf? FUCK reaver bug, its not shooting, the goons were closing in, the shuttle didn't have enough health to run, oh well i have done enough with it i guess. As the goons fired i clicked on the reaver and saw a very sad sight. Scarabs... ZERO. Oh damn, i was microing my shuttle so much earlier i hadn't had time to build scarabs for my reaver. Damn i'm stupid. Oh well i'm still ahead.
He then goes to counter, i have a reaver with a battery next to it, 3 groups of units all defending a larger area covering a medium sized choke, its all looking good. He moved in and holds his men outside, drops his 2 reavers. Unfortunately my reaver was out of range, unfortunately the pylon, battery, nexus formed a block (which was to protect it) but a block that stopped it from moving out to engage the enemy which was just outside of its range. Unfortunately my men were in range of his. It turned from a supposedly good position to a death trap and his reavers ripped apart my men as though they had the scarab upgrade (i checked the replay they didn't, though i was almost positive they must have) I dont really know what happened i was ahead just his men were so well placed and bunched together anything attackign died to goons or the 2 reavers so fast.
My expansion fell, he soon scouted the top exp and that fell too. I had enough to expand still, he didn't have so many probes, it might still work for me, but in the end he had too many and made me cancel my exp, i had no more minerals, no income, no units. GG
I sat there pissed, shaking my head, 1 guy with a camera came up and took a single photo of both of us then disappeared as fast as he arrived, some of the crowd left (commentators talk for 10 minutes between the games so they disappear for a short while between games) the others milled around, soo's fan girls all whispered excitedly, maybe my side did too i didn't look, i just sat there annoyed and gloomy.

Part 2:
It was getting closer to the start of the next match, the buzz of anticipation was rising up amongst those gathered to watch the white man suffer an agonizing death. I sat there staring at the monitor taping angrily at my keyboard wishing it were my opponents head. Unusually for me i wasn't looking around, just contemplating the job ahead, i knew luna was my worst map, i knew i was ahead (i had spent some time watcing the replay, i wasn't going to but my opponent loaded it up straight away (the little weasel) so i decided there was a benefit to doing so, and no disadvantages so i followed suit soon after, which just fueled my anger more seeing me lose the advantage) so i knew if i was winnign on my worst map then i couldn't lose on the next 2. I knew what i had to do now all i had to do was do it (wow say that 10 times fast).
5....4.....3......Soo's fan girls screams rival a stampeding horde of elephants "park jong soo fighting"...2..... (1 guy mutters (a little louder this time)"peter fighting" (i still felt embarassed, at least at OGN i had a lot of supporters!) 1.....(time to focus)..0..... game 2 began.
Game 2: IntoTheDarkness2(ITD), Peter @ 7, Soo @1
I go 2 gate robo, he goes 2 gate nexus? i think. My build was just ultra safe, unfortunately i end up behind on minerals as their multi is always up faster so i need my mid game plan to work flawlessly to reverse the position.
I get my multi up a bit after him, and we both start massing, my obs scout his base everythign is fine, he has a gate or two more then me, nothing different from practice. I have 4-5 gates and start my citadel and archives down in the corner just in case he doesn't scout, an invisible blur moves towards it and i chase down his pesky ob. Soon afterwards my mid game plan is ready. 2 shuttles speed off along the bottom of the map and up the side towards his base. An observer has scouted the way and a canon or so and a few goons is defending, i should be fine. Click unload shuttle 1 on the very edge of the map, control shuttle 2 as it approaches. First shuttle unloads 2 reavers, the 2nd unloads 3 zealots as it does a fly by, straight over to his ramp where it drops a dt which goes on hold position. No fast respond by units on low ground other then zeals CHECK! reavers and zeals killing his main CHECK! all thats left is to kill his nexus and i'm well and truly ahead. Unfortunately (i think) 2 goons in his base lived and with the zealot support managed to chase me away before the nexus died. I continue with a fwe more harassing drops. Then while his army is in his base i send my 2 and a half groups up to counter his mineral only multi that just came online.
Oh shit... no speed zeals.. stupid fool. Reconsider? Nah slow move attack gogo! I proceed to take my mineral only multi. Unfortunately my units arrive JUST as he has withdrawn all of his forces to the exact point i'm attacking if i had been 5 secs faster i would have been in a good position, nonetheless my shuttle (finished from annoying his main again) flys back to provide support and drops the 2 reavers. My men charge fowards and melt beneath a billion perfectly placed storms, my reavers explode without unleashing their fury and within 5 seconds my entire army is destroyed and he has 3 groups of men charging after my last 5 (still slow) zealots and on his way to counter me and finish the game.
Speed kicks in and my zeals take off for home, i've had 2 production rounds of units, forunately the first one was of templars, so they were now juiced up and ready for revenge. He arrived and grouped his men while i did the same. By the time his units were in position to attack i once again had 2 and a half groups of men ready. This time the reverse occured, it was his untis that faced the fury of the templars. After a breif skirmish, i had lost a group, he had lost 2 and was running his last away, and with that my speed zeals surged foward and trapped about 8 goons against the terrain and they all died to a storm.
I had survived the most critical point in the game but it was either even or i was mildly ahead. A short time later my late game plan was coming into action. Even in the middle of the game, in the middle of concentration, i hear the mutter of "ARBITERS!".
... At that point i mentally thought, "stfu i sure hope he didn't hear that"
But yes i was going arbiters, (in practice it was so annoying getting bogged down on this map when you both have huge groups of units and noone is willing to commit his forces. Thus arbiters were the perfect choice to move my men around as well as changing the nature of the game and putting him ont he back foot.)
My first arbiter pops out and i head up the map to see if i can catch him without observers and kill off some good units. I see a Dark Archon which moves foward and i think SHIT he heard it! But no, it only had feedback and was designed for templar hunting (damn smart idea i wish i had thought of that as mass temps is used a lot on this map) and it quickly steals my arbiters mana away. I retreat and wait a while longer.
A few battles ensue, (i miss out a few recalls and his dts raping my mineral only at one point, as well as me attacking and killing his hidden left side gas multi but i forget exactly when everything took place) and my arbiters (plural) are fully charged again 1 heads off to his main and warps in a group of units. Knowing his army will overrun mine with ease i take half a group of zeals and a temp to block the ramp to buy time and the arbiter sitting above them to make him wait for his obs as well. There was no way he was going to waste so many units hastily going pu the ramp and it was enough for me to level the majority of his base before his temps and other units had arrived to counter me. With that i run the men at the ramp to rejoin my other group and immediately recall them to the top elft of the map where i level his mineral only. He brings his army across to meet mine (which had met up with the rest from the bottom) and his pesky DA steals one of my glorious arbiters.
Things were looking good, he had less multis, no main thus lower production capacity, all i have to do is hold and win. I had the better fighting position the only bad thing was unlike him i hadn't built up an army of observers, to see under the arbiters cloaking. I was forced to retreat.
He brings his army in, he is just outside of my mineral unnatural, i am sticking close to the canons while my obs (which obviously had ensnare on them they were moving so slow) were enroute to join my forces, buying time i bring my arbiter out a little and a couple of templars. I can't see his exact units but i know where blurs are on the screen and i start spamming storms wherever i can. He pulls back a little and my obs have arrived, knowing my storms had hurt him and his army was ready to engage mine, i send my arbiter up to recall his main again. Only a small portion warp (i couldn't afford to move too many away) And he sensing defeat charges in, i actualy thought he had more units then he did in the end, but 10 seconds of fighting later and he had no units left and he types out. GG
I sat there happy, at least i wont be going home 2:0 today! The crowd was cheering, the buzz of excitement surrounded everyone, obviously the MBC staff knew that too as 2 guys with cameras and 1 with a tv camera sprint out of the back rooms and immediately start snapping a lot of pictures of both of us. Ignoring this and now into the swing of the ways of the weasel i load up the replay and start analyzing it. Nothing much from it everything for once had gone almost exactly according to plan.
This time as we waited for the next game to begin i looked around and smiled to the people on my side and generally turned back into my normal self.
(on a note about the guy who said "arbiter" at the start when i first sat down, the sound was low (i really like the OGN style where its incredibly loud it hurts as its another way of clicking yourself into full game mode) and you aren't meant to touch the sound at all but it just wasn't good enough for me so i actually turned it up a few notches but i guess just not enough. I doubt the opponent could have heard it as i only barely did, maybe he said it loud or something and it was a lull in the game sounds, as i didn't hear anything else from the entire 3 games.)

just relax and think! you can do it  relax is the key, cuz if ur too tense, you cant think and match is very intensive

Part 3:
My favourite map was ahead, the map i had raped silent control on, the map i had practiced the least on, the map i was most sure of winning, i had recently changed my build from a more risky fancy one, to a more straight foward gamestyle. But as for the match, things were following the normal order of things, the count down began.
gogogogogogo 5....4.....Soo's horde of fan girls scream out "park jong soo fighting" like possessed maniacs ... 3...(was that a small tremor i heard in their voices? no it must have been my imagination)....2.... (1 maybe 2? korean guys scream out "PETER FIGHTING!!!" (i had mixed emotions, it was still embarassingly small compared to what i'm used to but at least it was improving right??? right???)...1..... , it began.
Game 3: Raid Assault, Peter @ 6, Soo @ 12.
I really do apologize but i really dont remember half the stuff that happened in this game as there were so many little attacks... hopefully the vods will get out eventually and someone else can do an update or something. Anyway because of that part 3 will be worse the the other 2. (notice i picked those words carefully!)
Normal start, the little rat off gassed me and forced me to 2 gate, fortunately by the time i scouted him he ws doing the same build so i could steal his gas, and ended up having my gas mining up and running before he did. Not much happened at the start. We both massed, both went obs, i went 3 gate to quick mineral only multi, while he went for reavers instead, all i had to do was hold the inevitable push and i would be ahead.
With a group and a half of units and reaver/s in his shuttle he pushed forwards towards my base. I was forced off the high ground advantage but not before they had done their job but i was still behind as i had enough men to gaurd the high ground to either my base or to my expansion but not to both. So i took the quick decision to run my retreating goons away from my main onto the ledge that leads to my mining natural. While anything that i made would gaurd the ramp and hopefully be enough defence for there. He moves down and sits below my ramp and fortunately didn't rush straight up (as i only had 2 goons up there) It was at this point that i realized my third gateway hadn't built, so i had 2 gates 2 goons in both and 1500 minerals. Its hard to explain my feelings at that moment as i had played so well up until then i was so sure i was going to lose the third match because i just hadn't spent my money like i should. I then build a reaver, place another 4 gateways and discover 3 goons gaurding my mineral line i quickly bring over to the ramp to give me enough assistance to buy more time. I buy some more time with fake attacking from behind everytime Soo went to move up the front but after a while Soo made his move, dropped his reaver at the front and ran his goons up, my goons at the top held for a moment but were forced back. He now had high ground advantage stopping my bottom units coming up and enough units to stop me from attacking. Fortunately i had enough there that he couldn't defend the ramp and do lots of damage on my base at the same time. And having bought enough time to get a production round out managed to build enough that i did a full out attack on his forces and killed them.
At this point in time it was looking good, i had had an exp up for a long time now, his was only just finished, (though starting a 2nd) I spent the next few minutes just defending up and massing and doing a failed reaver drop. We both massed and macrod but i was ahead and i was a master of gayness, on a map that gave me a 50% bonus to all gay attacks. Thus for the next 10 minutes the game consisted of running masses of speed units around the back of the map into his back expansion, while dropping reavers and other units in his main, while taking my natural and the bottom left corner multi. He held the first few attacks with only a loss of units on both sides, but a drop in his main forced him so send a full group of units to defend, and a fraction later 10 zeals and 2 goons hit his mineral only, raising it to the ground before he could respond. He took the only decision he could and countered with everything he had, it took him a while and he lost a lot moving up the middle high ground ramp and gave me enough time bring my men gaurding bottom the bottom left base, and another production cycle to come to my natural and slow his push
While this happened my rampaging zeals had all died and left only a few goons that managed to take down his last nexus. He pushed further but i was now too far ahead, another minute passed and it was over. GG
After being 1:0 down, after almost throwing away the third match i had successfully made it into the next MSL. Fuck i was happy.
After packing up my equipment, i got up and smiled and nodded to my group of supporters (i think i saw the guy who was my only cheersquad member, i was planning on tracking him down and thanking him but i ended up having to do lots of stuff afterwards) then being chased by the photographers i walked off towards the back rooms. Surprisingly the back room was empty, but not for long, as daniel my manager came in and.. congratulated me for winning and his surprise for beign such good games. Then 3 interviews, a tonne of photographs, and a list of thigns i now had lined up for me to do all came my way. It wasn't for over half an hour that i had it all finished and my manager, brian and myself went into the restaurant ajoining the studio (which wsan't there last time) and sat down for some fancy food. Only bad news was March is "ocean league" or something giving all progamers a break where no tv games are played, so my 6th MSL Minor league appearance isn't for a while.
Anyway i was damn happy the place where my gaming career first got its break, now became the place i would first appear in a league, nothing could be sweeter. |

| fly all of tl.net down for your next game. you'll have bigger cheering section than all of them combined. they sound like very nice games too, where could the vods be released if they are? |
