Wikipedia:
Phantasy Star Online 2 is an upcoming game in the Phantasy Star series, published by Sega and due for release for Microsoft Windows in 2011.
Here is a TL thread the original:
+ Show Spoiler + For the uninitiated, Phantasy Star Online is a game that originally came out for the Sega Dreamcast in 2000. It's a Hack and Slash (action) RPG with a real time combat system using a timing scheme to execute simple combos. Much like the other game of the genre that came out in this period (Diablo II and its expansion), long-term gameplay is loot-driven and the zone is semi-randomized (different spawning locations, different portal locations). The art that drives this game is a very unique futuristic look that has always held a place in my heart.
There 12 classes split into 3 groups - Hunters, Rangers, and Forces. Hunters have powerful melee, Rangers have long range, and Forces wield useful and devastating techniques. Each class is a different combination of gender, race, and group. There are 3 different races: Newmans, which are the most adept at using techniques. Humans, which have a good balance of physical power and technique usage. Casts, which are androids that lack the ability to use techniques but have the highest damage potential and can employ traps to provide support and control.
I've been looking forward to this game for the better part of a decade. After trying out Phantasy Star Universe and being underwhelmed (to say the least) I had almost lost hope until it was finally announced at TGS 2010, to just about everyone who is still left in the communities' surprise.

For what it's worth, here's my take on PSO2. It looks like a high definition port of the original. For those of you who never had the pleasure of playing the original, that's a good thing.
It's amazing how addicting a game with only four dungeons (each with only two or three levels in them) can be. PSO is a grindfest. You level your character from 1-200, and most people who reached 200 put in 2000+ hours to get there. IIRC level 182 if the halfway mark as far as EXP gained goes, meaning if you reach level 182... you're only halfway to 200.
There were no voiceovers in the original, no traditional cutscenes, and with little to no real plot to speak of, the only incentive to keep going were these:
+ Show Spoiler +
Little red boxes. I'm not going to lie, killing an enemy you know dropped a certain rare item and seeing a red box where it's corpse used to lay was one of the greatest thrills of my adolescent life. Just writing about it now makes me feel all nostalgic, thinking about staying up all night during the summers grinding through the Ruins with a friend or two.
Anyways, that's all I could find on the game so far. I encourage anyone who played PSO to post their memories of the game, positive or negative, and for anyone who never played to ask questions about it, I will try to answer as best I can! |

PSO for the Dreamcast was great fun. We had broadband internet, so it took some explaining as to why I was tying up the phone line. Ah so long ago. I could definitely see playing this on the condition there isn't a monthly fee.

| I played PSO on the xbox for a long time until it eventually got to repetitive. I will definitely try it out but just because of the fact that I played PSO. |

PSO: Blue Burst (PC version) was $14.99/mo I believe. I assume the same will be true for PSO2. I hope this won't stop you from at least playing it at launch =( |

| I loved playing PSO Ep 1&2 for my GameCube, but I didn't even find the game until the official multiplayer had been dead for a while. I hope that I'll be able to get into this one! |

Haha yeah, I signed up for a free Netzero account back then to play. I actually bought the Dreamcast broadband adapter when that was released too. I remember having to download a Japanese iso from the Internet just to configure the thing because Sega didn't bother packaging a cd with the ones they sold in America (they didn't sell very many, that's for sure).
I really liked a lot of aspects of PSU, but Sega mismanaged that game into the ground. Despite having orders of magnitude more content than PSO ever did, Sega locked it all on release and slowly doled out new missions every month. Problem was that no one stuck around long enough because they got bored of the limited content. They also didn't do anything to stop cheaters, which sucked. From my experience with that game, I'm not optimistic at all about PSO2. Sega can make the best game ever, but it's still going to fail miserably if they won't support it properly. |

| Oh man I played the shit out of PSO with my friends years ago, and I really liked the DS game that came out sort of recently. I really enjoy the combat system that these games have, and I can't wait for this to come out. |

So this game will be released this year?
That's awesome, wonder if there will be a beta. |

I'm a bit skeptical about PSO2. Sonic Team hasn't really been impressive in a long time, and PSU was really disappointing.
PSO had a lot of magic to it because it was one of the first big online games, and you could tell the developers put a lot of love into it. But something tells me the next installment just won't have that. |

| If the leveling/drop system is similar to the original, I might try it out. Color me crazy, but I do love a good grind. ^^ |

There was a closed alpha and a Japanese-only beta scheduled for the beginning to summer of 2011. I haven't heard if it's still going on or if it will be opened to NA players. If the articles on PSO-World are to be believed it will be released sometime this year. |

| Reading the PSO-world forums right now it sounds like closed alpha is actually about to start. Hopefully I can post more screenshots and gameplay videos in the coming weeks. |

My friend owns this game for gamecube. We still play it to this day whenever we all get together for "Nintendo Night" Which used to be just standard weekend out of school charades. It's matured into drink beer and play nintendo once every six months lol.
We almost always play challenge mode though, We have no time to grind, just enough to beat a couple levels and then play some other game. I'm pretty sure to this day we still havent gotten more than halfway through the challenge mode although I honestly have no idea how long it is.
With that said, I will be buying this game! please keep the thread updated so I can know when it will be released.Last edit: 2011-07-03 23:45:40 |

Thanks for posting a link to my thread for the original =)
I'm super excited for PSO2. I've been playing so much PSO lately, but I'm really craving an update. I think that since PSO2 will be a pc exclusive, we'll see much better support like the kind Japan sees in the pc version of PSU. |
