they have a really hard time converting from vicky2 to hoi3, because hoi3 has something in the range of 10,000 provinces, while every other game has at most 1/4 that. With most being in the 1k ballpark

HoI3 is just too much. The game tells you nothing and basically just lets you die. So I hope EU3 is a bit more understandable

It's much more new player friendly, yes. A much better interface too.

Byzantium is easy too once you figure out how to block the ottoman army with your ships. After that a walk in the park

How do you do that? I tried to copy it, engaged Epirus, the little country up north from the southern base, and got bum raped by the catholik alliance or whatever it's called (fun part is that that country isn't even catholik).
I guess you need a pretty good navy to hold out against the ottomans, and slowly and steadily build up an army?
What do you attack first?
I bet i can maı̸̸̸̸̸̸̸̸̸̸̸̸̸̸̸̸̸̸̨̨̨̨̨̨ke you wipe your screen.

Well im often too slow to go for epirus. I start the game with full minting and build up a little fleet for 1 or 2 years. I take candar at the start tho thats not exactly the best choice. Sometimes I go for morea or something down there in greece. I try to avoid venice because their fleet rapes me. After i got enough ships to scare the ottoman fleet i build up an army of around 10 stacks get spies on ottomans and wait till they move all their men to asia, just wait till they fight timurids again. Declare war beat of serbia and bosnia and siege all of greece. If I took candar I have to hurry or my war exhaustions goes up too fast. But I think it can be done even without taking any countries at the start. Just wait for an easy opening. Epirus gets insta annexed by naples everytime I play byzantine. Just watch out for the alliances when you declare war and watch the armies ledger. Sometimes they fight a bad war elsewhere and will just white peace after a few months and you still annexed the one province things. And dont build galleys somehow a few carracks are enough to make the ottomans fear your navy. If you see any opening before that don't be afraid to declare war and hire mercenaries. You will be left with 14+ inflation most likely but that can be handled later. After you take the first 3-4 provinces the ottomans are doomed.

so I play my first game with the mameluks and so far it's looking ok.

I conquered Lybia, Saudi-Arabia and Iraq and vassaled Etopia

I am at 1440 right now and everywhere I got revolts right now because the game thought it would be fun to send 2 comets after each other destroying my stability.

What bugs me tho is that my technology advancement is basically zero because I have to take all the taxes and spend them on my army to fight down the rebels. Which blows up my inflation too

And why can you only build one province improvement at a time ......

Never start out with Africa or Middle East when you are starting out. They have the best early game units, but get fucked in the ass in terms of tech. Start as a European power such as Castille.

And why are you putting your Treasury so high? Inflation wrecks your shit and stability.

Well one, you shouldn't be playing a nation that big and relatively hard when you're first starting out. Second, you should only need ~10-15 regiments with maybe a general to handle infighting. You need to be making money per year, it does not matter if you are losing money per month. Like I said earlier, if you're starting out new play Castille.

You don't have to spend all that money on the army. They just lose.. What's it called.. Confidence or whatever, so it's not a big problem unless you're actually at war at the time.

Ok I've played this game for 3 days straight now (fuck you guys) basically 20 hours a day, and I still can't wrap my head around basically anything in the game.
Sometimes when a country is in an alliance with a country, every country in the world attacks you, whereas sometimes none gives a crap.
I play as France most of the time so it should be pretty easy.. but it's not for me lol.
Just reconquering France takes like aages, and even after 100 years I havn't taken nearly as much as the French guys did in history.
You lose 3 stability (even though you have a reason to attack) and the entire European continent thinks that that specific city state is baller as shit and comes in to help. You fight for eveeer, until at last you manage to get some half assed peace, because Austria has a bigger army than you etc etc etc.
And then you have to start over again.
I play on very easy with the easiest setting on everything.
I have a feeling there's some setting somewhere in the meny that makes you 15 times more powerful, because conquering Europe seems fucking impossible.
I bet i can maı̸̸̸̸̸̸̸̸̸̸̸̸̸̸̸̸̸̸̨̨̨̨̨̨ke you wipe your screen.

When you're going to war, it tells you who they are allied with and who has guaranteed protection with them. Pay attention to that. If you don't got a Casus Belli, you lose 2 stability + any other modifier you have. You need CB's to go to war -- ALWAYS. A lot of time if you got a legitimate CB, some of their allies won't show up on their ally list when you're in the Declare War screen. A mistake new players make is that they get a CB and declare war, but they don't click on the CB in the declare war screen so even though they got a CB they lose 2 stability because they didn't know you actually have to click on each individual CB.

And you should be peacefully annexing 90% of your Vassals around you over time while conquering Brittany and Burgandy while holding off England. The point of France is that they blow early on, but once you got Brittany + all of your Vassals peacefully annexed (except for one or two that you just conquer real fast later on when you can handle the European onslaught) you become a fucking powerhouse that no one can stop.

I have CB, it's the French reunion thing. I'm declaring war with my vassals, and they have allies (NOT guaranteed protection!) and they all fucking come! Wel not always, but yeah.
How do you peacefully annex?
I get the instability not because I lack CB, but because they're my vasalls. I can't really do much about that afaik.
Also almost every smaller country has like a TL;DR list of allies, as they're in trading unions. How do you go about that? Just mass up any army and say 'come at me bro!' or what?
You can't really get a CB against every country you wanna invade. Is there any way to provoke a CB?

Edit: oh shit... There's a button right there... wow...
Thanks lol XD
I've managed to miss that for.. I dunno how long time.. O_O

List of CB types:
http://www.paradoxian.org/eu3wiki/Casus_belli
You can try and use spies to give you a CB:
http://www.paradoxian.org/eu3wiki/Fabricate_Claims

And of course if your relationships with a nation are sour, you might get insulted, embargoed etc., which will give you a CB.

I'm rather an EU (III) newbie though, so, yehr.

Fantastic game, trying to learn HoI3 currently but goddamn, that one's quite hard. Luckily EU3 is quite easy to get into once you get past the interface.
Current games.

Netherlands 1656:

Sweden 1692:

Always get bored around that era, when you get past the reforms you generally have so much money you can really do whatever, just not as exciting. Like in the Sweden game, I could go and take England but to what purpose? Already have more than enough money and England won't put up any challenge.

Same with Netherlands, next step would be to take India (notice I took one province on the island next to it). But that will be even more of a joke as the tech groups of everything in Asia makes them terrible, I had a tiny transport fleet of 9 ships defeat 24 of theirs.

Still, definitely one of my favorite games of all time. Just not as fun once you get to the unstoppable force standpoint, really should try some mods.

Oh and for any new players who got the game during Steam sales:
