MLG Anaheim: A Quick Traveler's Guide for the TeamLiquider

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Airports
  • SNA - Of the two major airports you possibly can be flying into, John Wayne Airport is the closest one to the event.
  • LAX - LAX is off the map a good 30-40 minute drive to the northwest. A larger airport, but further away.

Points of Interest
  • MLG - The Anaheim Convention Center, where MLG is being held. Anaheim Gardenwalk is across the street for some good eats/drinks. Both the Anaheim Hilton and the Red Lion Hotel are basically next door to the Convention Center.
  • DSNY - Disneyland! Also, check out Downtown Disney for shopping without the steep entry price of the amusement park.
  • UCI - University of California, Irvine. If you know someone here, give them a holler! Also noteworthy for the pub on campus, with some seriously good beer, and good vibes in general.
  • KNTS - Knott's Berry Farm - Another staple amusement park, with some fun rides. Cheaper than Disneyland too!
  • Off the map to the north

Food - A quick note - everything listed here is very reasonably priced (they are places I frequented very often as a poor college student). Korean BBQ might be the one that pushes your budget the most though. There's more food at the shopping centers listed further down, but it's often slightly more expensive than these options.
  • FD1 - Little Saigon - Viet food in abundance here, definitely check out Brodard for the amazing spring rolls (Nem Nuong). Like nothing else you've ever had before. Deep fried leek, pork sausage, lettuce, and Viet mint rolled in a rice wrapping, dipped in a sweet and sour eggdrop sauce. The crispy leek with the soft, chewy rice paper outside and the salty sausage with the sweet/sour dip.... and the mint just makes it heavenly! Making myself hungry here o.o
  • FD2 - Diamond Jamboree - This decently sized outdoor shopping center type place is home to many good restaurants. Noteworthy is BCD Tofu, a Korean style tofu soup house and 85 Degrees Bakery, an exceptional Asian style bakery.
  • FD3 - Mitsuwa Marketplace - A small Japanese supermarket, with a secret inside: the best ramen in the OC. Santouka Ramen is a small stall in the food court of the supermarket, with some delicious, savory, brothy ramen.
  • FD4 - At the intersection of Walnut and Jeffery, there are two shopping centers that face each other, both with great food. Notably, A&J Restaurant, and Taiko.
  • FD5 - In n' Out Burger - The California classic. Super cheap and super delicious.
  • MLG - Right next to the convention center and the Gardenwalk is Alerto's, for my favorite Cali/Mex guilty pleasure: Carne Asada Fries, or "super fries." Basically carne asada steak and all the typical Mexican trimmings on a bed of french fries.
  • Near FD3

The CAMP off of 73 and Baker St has a great selection of places little food places as well. It also has one of the best bars open at night, Mesa.

There's also a Vietnamese bakery/restaurant called Bánh Mì Chè Cali and its hella amazing place for good food for a cheap price. They have buy one get one free for boba milk tea, 5 bakery breads for 4 and buy 2 Bánh Mì get one free.

    15551 Brookhurst St
    Westminster, CA 92683

  • Also right by FD1

  • Korean BBQ - Anaheim location is just south of Knott's, and the other one is really close to Brodard / FD1

If anyone is in the mood for some Korean BBQ, I like Cham Soot Gol alot. There's a location in Anaheim off Beach Blvd and another one just off the 22 on Garden Grove Blvd. They probably take about 10-15m to get to from the convention center via surface streets. Delicious all you can eat BBQ for about $17/person. You get self serve ice cream too! The one in Garden Grove gets ridiculously packed at night, so I'd recommend the one in Anaheim if you plan to go with a sizable group.

Shopping
  • SH1 - The Tustin Marketplace - A HUGE shopping mall with endless amounts of goodies and food. Too much to list here.
  • SH2 - The Block at Orange - The closest mall to the event, the Block is another megalithic shopping center.
  • SH3 - The Tustin District - Yeah, there's a lot of shopping in the OC.
  • SH4 - Fashion Island - A more upscale mall.
  • SH5 - South Coast Plaza - The mall to end all malls. This place is beyond big.
  • Near MLG

You should add Anaheim Gardenwalk. It's walking distance from the venue and all hotels in the area. They have restaurants and bars. There is also Bar louie. This bar is awesome! They have happy hour from 4-7 mon-fri and it's a great happy hour at that. All draft beers are 3.25 for a 14oz along with 5$ martini's/ well drinks and half off appetizers(most of the appetizers are pretty filling and some can even fill you up complexly)
    Here is the address:

    321 West Katella Avenue
    Anaheim, CA 92802-3612
    (714) 635-7410

Bars
  • BA1 - Anaheim Bars - Phoenix Club, Danny K's, etc. Of course there's always Dave and Busters down by the Block for local stuff. BarCraft Anaheim is also taking place at a bar in this area.
  • BA2 - The Newport Crawl - The Goat Hill, Malarky's, and lots more. Seriously, just walk down the street, you WILL find bars, and there will be a crowd.

Beaches
  • BE1 - Huntington Beach - A fair warning, it will be crowded. Parking is expensive unless you want to walk, and the sand is kinda gravelly. Fire pits available for bonfires, but c'mon guys, you should be watching Starcraft at that time of the day!
  • BE2 - Newport Beach - Parking can be difficult to find in the residential areas around the beach, but the beach itself is less crowded, much chiller, and the sand is much finer and nicer on the toes.
  • BE3 - Laguna Beach - If you make the trip down here it is worth it. Lots of great waterside restaurants and shops, and a beautiful beach.
  • BE4 - Crystal Cove - Special mention to this beach. Probably the most picturesque, Crystal Cove is a State Park, so bear that in mind. Beautiful.
  • BE5 - Seal Beach - I forgot about this one! Gets crowded around the pier, but if you stay away from it, its much more manageable. Clean, nice beach.

NOTE: this is all off the top of my head; these are my personal favorite places after attending UCI for a good few years. Let me know if there's any other local spots that you love and want to tell everyone about! I will edit things in accordingly.

Firstly, thanks for putting together this map and list. Theres a lot to see in the Anaheim area and its close to LA and a bunch of other things. You WILL need a car so make sure to meet some people who can drive you around. However, I think there's plenty of things to do around the area. HOTEL PARTY, GSL watching, downtown Disney.

+1 to the Round 1 suggestion. It's a Japanese arcade chain and the only one in the U.S. I'm sure you will be impressed with the epic-ness of it. Darts anyone?

Thank you so much for this. Is there any reason you don't list Seal beach on it? Lots of ppl recommend it and closest to MLG.

Noted. Thanks for the tips guys, keep em coming! I'm no expert on the area since most of my experience is in Irvine, not Anaheim.

Really cool write up. Really great idea.

The Travel Guide could almost be a feature for every event(like a Live Report.)

Just need someone from every city to do it.

Just in case, a couple of my buddies have said that Pho Kimmy in Westminster is the best Pho in Westminster.

Still wondering if I want to go, I should really train for my century.
