Let me correct my statement a little bit after watching their videos.

The game LOOKS like Diablo 2 (angle of camera, user interface, SOCKETED ITEMS, etc.), but the skills system is similar to Final Fantasy 7. You can insert skill gems into items' sockets (but this process is reversible, I believe). Furthermore, there are "support gems" which makes the "skill gems" skill stronger, such as casting more fireballs, etc. similar to FF7's All Materia. Furthermore, these gems levels up.

So yea, it's a fusion of FF7 and D2.

Oh. That sounds awesome. Didn't know.

Diablo 1 and 2 allowed for Fx hotkeys (F1-F8 if I remember correctly). Personally I'll be completely happy if Alt button functionality is retained (maybe not showing item names but just highlighting them). It's invaluable in 3D environments, to the point where they've even included it in Heroes of Might & Magic V.

You can SWITCH skills with F1-F8 (or remapping those keys to something else),
but that does not EXECUTE the skills, which is what's more useful.

One thing I wish different about the controls in this game, would be to Mimic the unique control style of a game called Nox (1999 Diablo clone many people considered better than D2). The movement was based off holding RMB to move the direction the mouse was pointing. This is a more interactive, realistic, and reflex-based method of movement than standard point-and-click movement, which I consider to be way over-used and pretty lame.

You should read more before you post a thread like this. Diablo 3 doesn't have purchasable power, they said they only sell things that won't give unfair advantages.

Items give ingame advantages. If you can pay for them without doing anything ingame to pay for or find them, then you have an unfair advantage.

@NotSorry, it's the graphics of the UI, not the size and positioning, that's a problem. The graphics are most definitely not very good, and the devs acknowledge that and will update the graphics accordingly.

Well, I can't say much about D3 without playing it myself, but this game looks very promising to me. And wouldn't it be awesome if both games turned out be amazing? Well, my social life would disappear completely, but it would still be awesome :D

Oh man looks so sweet. Graphics are intense!!

Also, as has been said, you shouldn't diss a game before you have even played it. How something will eventually play out can only really be known a solid amount of time after release and everyone becomes acquainted and economy stabilizes. Even if you disagree with features, one can then just say "it's not looking too good, let's see how it plays out."

Yeah, most skills required mouse aiming anyway.

Imagine trying to use bone spear with your 'a' key... The only skills that only having hotkeys switch out spells that added a delay to the time you could cast em were point blank AoE spells like Frost Nova, or Barb shouts.

Even with only switching them, it wasn't really hard to reliably use several skills at once. Hell, take dueling with a Paladin for example: You had to balance using Charge, Blessed Hammers, Teleport, and effectively switching your aura between Concentration and Vigor, as well as back to an aura after using Teleport as it only bound to your RMB.

In a Hack'N'Slash style game managing more skills than that is kind of silly as it is.
But there's no sense crying over every mistake. You just keep on trying till you run out of cake

I will try to play both beta and decide than. But only from pre release notes it sound way way better than d3. They call buying items that make you more powerful unethical.^^

Well, I don't know how the multiplayer community is at the moment, probably pretty damn small, and some those who play now would really really good, or using aimbots.
Personally I enjoyed the game for it's multiplayer.
Many people said they loved the single player, but it was not something I found to be particularly great. It's your call... I don't know if you'd be like me and be impartial or ambivalent to the SP, or be like someone else and really love the SP. It's not dark at all like Diablo, but IMO that doesn't affect how good a game is at all. It's really light-hearted with a small bit comedy, even.

I disagree. I suppose you've never played a game where you use the mouse to aim, and keyboard to activate abilities. It's not any different pressing a keyboard key than clicking a mouse button.

First of all, I'd say it does seem hard to manage multiple skills at a time to the best effect. Secondly, my whole point isn't that it's hard, but that it's not a good or customizable GUI system, and hence not the easiest way to have things implemented. Diablo 2 does two things which make it more of a hassle: 1. it only switches skills 2. it doesn't let you re-bind the hotkeys to something more convenient. Like someone said, you have to use 3rd party program to get a decent layout.

I couldn't disagree more. I hate games that don't take a bit of skill and reflex and thought to play.
Any modern game you look at now (and many old ones with the exception of diablo) seem to use hotkeys to activate skills. Diablo 3 has what? like 8 skills or something (like guild wars), all activated with the keyboard. If you don't use the keyboard to activate your skills, and/or don't use skills in succession for combos, people will call you a noob.

I watched both the trailers and frankly it looks like they just copy pasted D2 and changed the graphics a bit. In my opinion I am glad D3 doesn't look like this.

What is wrong with that? I think it's pretty good that there is a D2 clone that allow me to relive the D2 experience.
Interesting, isn't it?

I'd say using skills in D2 is almost the same as using skills in say SC2. Pressing 'F' for fungal, then pressing the mouse button to choose where to place a skill is identical to pressing 'A' for the Blessed Hammers skill then clicking your mouse button to cast it.

As you said, it is pretty well identical.

I actually think in a game like D2 that their system is superior to any other possible way. Think about playing any diablo 2 class (or any class in any game similar) early in the game, and even later in the game no one skill is going to kill any monster. What is easier, pressing 'a' once to toggle your mouse hotkey then clicking six times to cast bonespear six times, or pressing 'a' then aim clicking repeated six times?

Even if you are kiting during all of this I think that it is easier the Diablo 2 way... but that might just be because of how many hours I put into that game.

Ummm, no you can re-bind the hotkeys to something more effective quite easily...
+ Show Spoiler +
And if you mean changing which skill is on which key, then you just click the skill button and hover your mouse over a skill and press whichever skill hotkey you want. Ezpz.

I used some third party programs in my days in D2 (namely chicken, as an HCer if TPPKers were going to use it, you needed it too) but never anything to change hotkeys. The game itself was well equipt to do it on its own.

Diablo 3 has 6 active skills, and three passive increases you can use at any given time. That is about the same as your average Hammerdin uses at any given time during gameplay. Hell, I already listed them all... Hammers, Charge, Concentration, Vigor, Teleport, and Redemption is easily manageable with some practice really. And that is comabt skills only... completely ignoring using Heart of the Oak, Battle Orders, Battle Command, Shout, and Blessed shield to buff yourself before action starts.
