I just did a duathlon practice thing today that a my local triathlon club hosts every week. When the water gets warm it turns into a triathlon practice.
It was supposed to be a 1.7 mile run, 9-12 mile bike, 3.1 mile run. I have never done anything other than just biking or running separately up until earlier.
So I take off on the run just following the guy in the lead pacing myself for a comfortably fast 1.7 mile run. He runs past it (there were no markers anyway) and just goes to the 5k turnaround point. I figured I'd just follow him so I ended up running with him the whole way back. So my first third of the event was definitely faster and more taxing than I had planned.
Then I did the shorter 9 mile bike course but saw a guy I ran in high school with running and I slowed down and talked with him for a few minutes. I wasn't even sure I was going to do the last run part at all because I wanted to ease into this triathlon deal. But I cruised back on the bike and felt like I could go for a little run. My legs felt extremely awkward when I started running after I hopped off my bike. I thought maybe I'd just run a mile out and a mile back but a mile out is only another half mile to the 5k turnaround so I just went for it.
I timed myself for the total time I was running and biking but stopped my watch during the transitions which I took my time at. I took probably 3 minutes or so before I got on my bike and about 2 minutes before I took off for the last run. It took me 78 minutes without transitions for a 5k run, 9 mile bike, 5k run and around 83 minutes with transitions.
Next week I'm going to keep my watch running and just get splits for each event as well as both transitions.
Am I alone on TL with a triathlon quest?
Yea, I definitely notice this on the occasional instance when I combine biking and running. The first mile or so always feels awkward and I feel very tight. I also notice when I bike I can't really get my HR up to high, by the time I am even at 160 or so my legs are starting to get on fire and I think my legs would just crash on me if I tried to get anywhere near like a tempo type HR of 180-190. I guess the legs/musculature just isn't strong enough or efficient enough to handle the intensity my aerobic system can? Not really sure if I'll ever do a triathlon though as I enjoy running about 10x more than I do biking. I like getting out and biking once a week/every other week for a few hours, but I can't see myself (right now anyway) cutting out any running to make room for more biking/swimming.
Haha, i dont like cutting my running routines for other stuff either. I think for easy days i might run just a little less, like instead of a 5 mile easy run, i'd do 3. In addition, i'll add some swimming/biking routines to that particular day. Personally i think it's a worthwhile trade.
Edit: due to the fact that i cannot access a pool at the momment, and still sorta saving up for a bike. I've been on a pretty strict lifting schedule as well as running.
I run ~6 times a week and lift 5 times a week. I only lift upper body with something like Day 1. Chest/abs Day2. Back Day3. Shoulders/Obliques Day4. Arms. I just cycle those 4 days countinously through out the week. I can't really do any leg lifting cuz it interferes too much with my running workouts. But i might find time to try to incorporate it. However, my leg look big enough as it is lol....
So far this routine has been working pretty well for me, i haven't really noticed declines in my running performance, i'm still getting faster with workouts even with this lifting routine. Last edit: 2012-05-20 01:23:52 |

Squatting heavy weights will help so much for biking. I feel like if that's the only lower body thing you do it would be worthwhile. Squatting shouldn't hurt easy running too much especially when your body gets more used to it. Or just lift after you run.

well, I just finished my first swim and run and I am still saving money for a good bike...
Originally I am a Swimmer and I m still in my swimming team but instead of practicing every day i just go swimming 3-4times a week for about 1,5 to 2 hours. The other days I run alot switiching betwenn long distance runs (20km) or some short distance stuff (5km-12km).
So I will proabably get my bike around my birthday on August second but then the Thriathlon season will be almost over in Germany so I will start next year and just start to partice and exercise.

I just finished my second duathlon trial.
1st 5k in 20:41 1st transition: 1:57 Biked the longer 12 mile course because I went the wrong way in 47:02 2nd transition: 1:09 2nd 5k in 20:24
Total time was 1:31:15
Overall I'm happy. I don't know how I ran my second 5k faster than the first. My legs felt so dead after the first 5k and bike. Actually come to think of it I might have turned around too early in the 2nd 5k. I really wish there were course markers.

Pumping this thread,
Ironman Branson is coming up (http://ironmanbranson.com/) Been training for it, attached clip on aerobars to my road bike which is a cannondale caad8 7sora, I also had to change saddles because the orignal saddle was not comfortable on my groin.
This isn't my bike but the model is, and it just has a different saddle, and clip on aerobars. I think i configured it pretty well, I moved the saddle forwards to put more weight on the front wheel, and when i look at my reflection by buildigns when riding my back is fairly straight.

I haven't had much training in swimming, but i've been in the gym 5 days a week usually, lifting and incorporating my swim muscles (lats) in my workouts. I don't have an easy access to the pool...
Hopefully I can get out of the water and still have enough breath for the rest of the race!

Just found this thread. I'll be looking to get in some tri's next summer. I live in a part of the world where it hits -30 deg C quite regularly in the winters, which, needles to say, impedes my running. I figure I'll take to the local pool on the cold days to get my swimming up to par. I already run and bike to work so I figure I'm good there, at least as far as completing an event goes. Currently riding a cyclocross bike (Kona Jake the Snake). Gotta get some aero bars on there though. What's the most comfortable saddle you've come across? I find that no matter what I do/try, my diddlies end up sore.
Love the idea of a triathlon as it should show you exactly what aspect of your body/health you need work on. |
