His impact on the game is enormous, so when people say all he does is make flashy moves, well those flashy moves win his team the fights, ganks, lanes, and match. If he hops on a windrunner and nails huge dual shackles that can lock down two of five heroes for 4 seconds, yeah its flashy, but it makes an impact. When he hooks 25 people in a match, its flashy, but it gets them wins.
For myself, I was never a fan of Pudge. Although many would probably disagree, I think both Pudge and Vs are quite similar and I'd rather have Vs over Pudge.

The two aren't even close in role
I was thinking more along their mechanics. Swap/hook, both having a stun ability. Pudge uses hook to attempt to gank and initiate, the same for the Vs. Both are used to catch runners, and both are used to save allies. Pudge is more defensive but both have a CC ability (ones range stun the other is pudges ult which is like a melee stun). I do not see them being very different.

pudge is one of the very few true solo ganker while venge is a support ganker? venge's purpose is assisting team by making the enemy vulnerable while pudge seeks to deal the damage to kill the enemy himself.. Venge is impossible to mess up with while pudge is high risk high reward..
