| Blizzard now can't do anything about it. They only have themselves to blame for not hiring IceFrog already in 2007. By that time it was very obvious that DotA has grown huge. |

Spectators?
According to Q&A on dota2.com there will be heavy infrastructure for spectators, so that's probably not it: Show nested quote +Q: Can you spectate an already ongoing DotA 2 game? (by Valo) A: A lot of the game will be built around spectating and shoutcasting support. You will be able to join most ongoing games (unless the players marked it as private) and just watch them. You can join a game your friend is in, see what your favorite clan is doing, or simply pick a skill level and a hero you like and it will find you one to watch. We also have a system in place that automatically distributes the load to multiple servers so that the game itself won’t be affected by users joining to spectate. Our distribution network will allow us to support any number of users that want to watch, by dynamically assigning more servers to the task. There will also be special tags and search options to help you find live or old shoutcasted games. Shoutcasters will be able to operate as directors, so anyone watching will have his camera looking at the same things the shoutcaster is viewing. There is also an optional anti-cheat mechanism built in so that the game you are spectating can be time delayed by any amount of time to reduce potential abuse.
"Will be" doesn't mean that there already is though. Easy to implement a simple spectator feature while the bigger system is being made. |

| I really don't see the point of making Dota2. I mean, HoN is there with everything better than Dota, so why would they make Dota 2. Judging by the limited screens and footage of this game it looks like LoL 1.5 so far, which is quite bad in itself. When I first learned about it I really hope they would make it into an awesome game, but the more stuff is released the less hyped I am. Would be nice if this game turned out great, but I guess I'll remain with HoN. |

They could because every single image and model in warcraft 3 are created by Blizzard and thus the property of Blizzard.
Dota exists almost entirely on models allready present in the game, property of Blizzard.
If i make an awesome game using legos i can't just suddenly start selling legos as part of my game.Last edit: 2011-08-16 19:02:45 |

DOTA 2 is made by Icefrog, which is far enough of a reason to try it out. |

Except HoN isn't Dota. Neither is LoL. If you think HoN is better than Dota gameplay-wise you might just not have been into Dota anyway. For a large part though, Dota1 gameplay is exactly what we want. |

When I got introduced to Dota by a friend of mine I got into HoN beta shortly after. And honestly, I see basically no difference between the games except for better graphics and ui, plus more convenient online setup (seeing as it's a whole game made out of War3 map and you don't need 3rd party stuff like Garena). |

You were introduced to DotA and then played HoN explains everything. You didn't really get to experience DotA enough to notice the differences. The only reason I switched to HoN was because of the "upgrades" such as leaver protection, reconnection etc. Gameplay wise DotA has always been far superior.
By the way, I hope you don't mind I borrowed your comment for my signature. |

It seems DotA 2 isn't using orc, elves, taurens etc. Those are part of Blizzard's world. There's no reason they can't make a flying redheaded sorceress or a blinking antimage with razor blades.
If they don't call Tauren Chieftain Tauren Chieftain in Dota 2 then they have already gone around copyright. |

HON is a great game, S2 is a crappy company. I'll play wherever the people are and my friends are, which at this points means DOTA 2 unless DOTA 2 is a complete piece of shit |

I second the "this game has a learning curve like a klein bottle" thought, and hope that somewhere here we could actually make a good DotA community. TL is by far the best community I've come across that's a decent size, so maybe it can work here. I wouldn't hold my breath, however, something about the DotA genre turns people into rampaging mouth breathing rage machines.
That said, I will be more than happy to help ANYONE when they start out - I've played dota for a significantly larger proportion of my life than I'm comfortable to admit, and whilst I'm horribly out of practice competitive wise (curse you uni for taking dota time away), competitive types aren't going to need help.
Might I suggest a list of steam names for those who wish to coach and/or be coached - I think there's a coaching system that will be in place? I'll put my name forward as a start - my steam's lozarian anyway, it wouldn't take much to put two and two together. |
