I like playing POTM. What's wrong with POTM? You can leap into the trees or up cliffs; your stun is more satisfying to pull off and you get to build agi carry items instead of force staff.
Not to mention save your teammate on the other side of the map using your ult.

yeah, and a little over half of pros use it, the exception is the heavy skillshot characters, like the ones that you have to aim very carefully because it's a small aoe.

Incorrect. Smart casting means that you e.g. have your mouse over the target, press the hotkey for Urn and the charge goes off to whoever you had the mouse floating above. If the action would be "press hotkey, click to where you want it" it replaces it with "press hotkey - action goes where your mouse currently is".
On someone like SF it e.g. doesn't have an affect since his razes aren't targetted. On e.g. Urn or a WR shackle/arrow it saves you a click.

Pretty sure you can smartcast aoe spells without a target in LoL.
