If you go for a cheap mechanical you will regret it.

Cheap as in price? I think there are green alps switches for 60 dollars. That's as low as it gets. Why not spend the extra 20-30 dollars on something 'decent' which will last a long time and also have a better resale price.

Mostly on the keycaps. PBT Keycaps are basically rougher feels and more durable than the FC200

I shouldn't say that FC 700 is waaaay better than FC200 but most feature on FC700 are improved from the FC200

Ofc, they got all 4 switches for FC700

clicky = blue

heukchuk = black

jeokchuk = red

non clicky = brown

geekhack linkies for reviews

edit some info based on the menu from what you've seen >_< sorry

Keycaps are replaceable and I need this keyboard relatively urgently so I think that I'll be going with the FC 200 (I don't think that I will notice too much of a difference because it'll be my first mechanical keyboard, kinda like SATA 2 vs SATA 3 SSDs after using mechanical drives all your life). Thanks for your help though!

Hey guys,

I'm new to mechanical keyboards, so I'm looking for some suggestions - I'm a college student who works a lot through the night (well, it might be gaming more often than I'd like to admit ) and has a roommate, so I'd need a keyboard that's relatively quiet, and would prefer one that's backlit (blue? :D). Also, again being a college student, I'd have to stay towards the lower end of the price range, something around $100, give or take. Besides that, I'm open to suggestions.

Thanks!

Cheap price mech kb?? Why not try noppoo, PLUM/ PLU or even keycool (direct clone of FC200). Though you need to have import it from taobao site.

taobao site is pretty cheap for Malaysian, so I do not know the price for western delivery + imports.

@moltenlead

just trying to give certain examples. I guess FC200 gonna be the first one

Backlit is expensive, so if you want to save money then drop that.
If you need backlit look for a Ducky Shine, should be around $150 and comes in all switch types and a huge amount of backlighting colours.

If you can live without backlighting and don't need a numpad then have a look for a CM storm quickfire rapid that should fit your price range.

Sound wise get anything other than blue switches and you should be fine, if you still have sound problems then look into some o-rings.

Can anyone compare the sound of a blue switch mech keyboard to like a basic 10$ rubber dome keyboard? I went with a blue CM Storm quickfire rapid because it was 20$ cheaper than the brown keyboard. I don't hate noise or anything, I'm just curious how loud it would be. Is it like a rubber dome keyboard? Or louder/softer/different?

there is no switch louder than cherry blues. Rubberdomes are about as quiet as my reds w/o landing pads.

That seems to be fine, it feels as loud as me typing on my keyboard which I believe is a rubber dome (some 9$ dell crap) and loud typing doesn't usually bother me. Hopefully I don't drive my brother crazy, haha.

You better have a room that are far from peoples though. Well if you are always bottoming out the sound will be more prominent.

Well...

Buckling Springs are significantly louder than MX Blues.

So the answers are "you'll regret it" and "get one with a layout you don't want from Malaysia". Awesome, excellent help, A++.

Well given that it's free help they're offering, you could probably be less sarcastic. The knowledge that you would regret it is something that has dissuaded plenty of people on TL before. If you're still determined to buy one cheaply, just tell them you're aware of the risk but you still want to buy something cheap. That's a much better response to what you got than sarcasm.

At least they had the decency to reply. Some of which were actually helpful to a certain extent. Honestly I had the same first thoughts when I was looking into mechanical keyboards for the first time. "Oh I'll just find something for $50." Not only did I realize that there are very few that are around that price range, but also how you need to be willing to spend some more money if you want some decent mechanical keyboards. You'll realize that dishing out that extra money is worth it. Not only will the quality be better, but there will be a lot more options available to you. I would recommend going AT LEAST $80 minimum for a mechanical keyboard. Around that price you can get some keyboards such as Ducky, Rosewill, and Cooler Master.

Is the only difference between blues and browns the noise, or does the noise/way the noise activates somehow affect how the keyboard feels?

There is a difference in noise as well as the feeling. Brown switches are actually lighter than blues and with tactile feedback, but without the click, it feels like brown switch is somewhat in between blues and browns.

Just RMAed my SS 6gv2 that had as funky spacebar for a Qpad MK-50 red, can't wait for red switches. The blacks are a tad bit too heavy for comfort.

what's a good choice for a pure typist? i rarely play games anymore, and i can't decide which switch to pick. i hear some people saying they prefer mx blue over mx brown for typing, and others saying the opposite. i also should note that i have a roommate who has a room right next to me. will this be a problem if i get the mx blue? (the occasional infrequent bursts of noise is the worst, and i don't want him to experience that all year lol)

blues probably wouldn't be the switch for you. You should think about getting browns or reds. I personally prefer reds to any other key for typing, its light, quiet, and with landing pads and some other mods its almost completely silent.

For a pure typist I recommend going for blues, maybe browns. or if you have the money get Topre real force (i heard its very good for typing). if you get a good cherry mx blue keyboard, there wouldnt be any occasional infrequent bursts of noise. the sounds are consistent unless u bash ur keyboard with different strength levels. the noise may be loud, but since your roommate has a room of his/her own the noise should not disturb him/her at all unless there is no noise

Even if you really want a blue, buy o-ring , it helps dampened the sound a bit. Less bottoming when typing also lessen the sounds. Touch typing is the way to go for blue switch.

Topre are much more expensive, expect the price to go over 300 dollars or less.

Elitekeyboard linkies on topre price.

You can try Ducky entry level keyboard that has alps switch on it.
