Oh boy, I still remember the day when I got the armor that allowed you to go up/down underwater in X-Com Terror from the deep - I got so excited over it that I woke up my older brother who wasn't impressed enough for my taste (I was like 8 or 9 years old).
Looks great thus far - more promising than the latest ... lets call them spinoffs that the x-com series created. |

Did anyone really care about the X-Com reboot, other than to be disappointed and move on? |

I´ve pre-ordered Xenonauts and got the alpha version.
Make no mistake: This game is FAR from finished however it does really bring back the good memories from X-Com. I hope and prey the release version of the game can sort of match the old X-Com games. |

| Xenonauts.com was recently revamped to be the site to "sell the game" to audience and their new company/community site is now at http://www.goldhawkinteractive.com. It is also now possible to pre-order the game from Desura (http://www.desura.com/games/xenonauts) and you get access to the early builds of the game (big one coming soon) and when the game is released you can choose between key to Desura or Steam version of the full game. | Looks pretty sweet, albeit a tad expensive (considering that they have a "cookie cutter" to follow). The original is probably still the best game of its kind. |

| I'm thinking of pre-ordering this game. Has anyone kept up with development and played the current build? |

| I would pre-order but I'm skeptical how well it would feel as a tactical game, not even talking about true X-Com successor. Last tactical games I've played have been very disappointing, to the point I just dropped em. So... I'll wait. If it's that good, I'll definitely pay for it. X-Com is my childhood's epic-game. |

i agree, glad firaxis is being nice enough to give us a real remake, it's always nice for a developer to care about their community! |

| Oh.. that looks great. If they preserve the mechanics, then I have no problem with all the cinematic moments and most likely they can be disabled. |

| I don't know about that. Firaxis has a bigger budget but they seem to be going more for a Valkyrie Chronicles type of game. I enjoyed Valkyrie Chronicles 2 when I played it but I prefer the X-Com style more. This one is more true to the original but with an inexperienced developer on a much smaller budget. |

You're right. Haven't played VC, but since I enjoyed UFO: Aftermath/Aftershock/Afterlight, I found this version similar and loved the vibe. Honestly just by watching both vids and generally checking the sites of the games the only real difference I spotted, besides engines, was the cinematic approach to combat and possibly Geo combat since it wasn't shown for 3D counterpart.
I certainly hope both teams try to stick to the old core games, rather than follow UFO series. Yet I can't say UFO was bad, it just wasn't exactly X-Com. Too simplified but at the same time I wouldn't want needless amounts of factors either, game should stay fun while being smart, not over-do it with things which eventually annoy the player. But I guess that's very subjective.
I wish them luck because there haven't been much of anything that would make me excited, and these guys bring hope |

I dunno, I really dislike the 80s action movie-feel of the ingame shots there. Some of the point with the original XCOM was the suspense and worry the incomplete information and limited time units would give you, and the music and sound effects helped amplify that. With some generic action music, the tension dissapears, and takes with it a rather central part of the game experience.
I want tense alien hunting, not "America's Army Saves The World Again, HIGH FIVE!". |

The Valkyrie Chronicles series have classes, which makes certain soldiers way better than others in very specific areas. It's to the point where each class can only equip a specific weapon type that is good against a specific enemy.
Firaxis is removing time units from the game. At the start, soldiers can only move or act once but later on they can do multiple things. For these type of games, I'm not a fan of very different classes and abilities. Soldiers having different stats when you recruit them is one thing. Having very disparate abilities sounds more suited for a fantasy setting. |

I haven't seen much of the generic stuff (or heard, I haven't heard any of the music at all).. however, if you're referencing the flags on the backs of your soldiers I believe it's togglable, so you could either have them wear their home country's flag (neat imo) or have them all wear a certain country's flag (where they're based out of maybe?), or none at all. I think it's a neat feature that adds character to your soldiers.. I do hope they retain the atmosphere of dread from the original though, so far I'm skeptical but I hope they just haven't shown any scary stuff.. Part of the sense of dread comes from the ridiculous difficulty of the original which I also assume they'll keep.
has anyone played the game that this thread is actually about? I'm thinking about picking it up to sate my thirst for aliens if it's any good |

Rewatched the video and yeah, this time noticed that they did remove time units. I always liked them, made combat more difficult and deeper. That's one of the reasons I still love Fallout Tactics on par with other parts, if not more. Hopefully their variation of combat isn't gonna be bad.
Still I loved how they showed the base, the antfarm style really clicked with me. I'm happy there are 2 X-Com games coming and honestly there's nothing bad about them being different. Imho, they will only complement each other or you can always choose the hardcore one (seems like most people here are rather going for the 2D counterpart). |
