If you weigh 70kg on 180cm, you're skinny as fuck. If you still have some belly fat, it's because you have very little muscle. Personally, I would suggest you read the general training thread and see if doing something like startign strength is possible for you. With bodyfat as low as yours, you'll probably see a change in your physique very quickly if you follow a proper training program and bulk up a tiny bit. |

combined, but they usually come in 60/40-ish ratio. It's not a problem. |

No one has been responding because we're sick of telling people to read the stickies. Everything you need to know you can find and validate within minutes of actually reading this forum.
- The General Training Recommendations Thread will tell you everything you need to know about beginner routines and expectations
- The General Nutrition Recommendations Thread is full of information on diet that can help you get started on planning your own diet. Make note that diet does not mean a restriction of calories/macro but what and how much you eat.
- The TL Health and Fitness Initiative 2012 Thread is constantly being updated with posts by people on many different routines (although the fast majority are on strength routines) at every level of experience which provides immediate validation of the information obtained from the previous threads linked.

Question about recovery:
I've started playing a lot more basketball recently; is there any significant difference between recovering from weight training as opposed to intense basketball practice? I.e. is there anything other than sufficient sleep and food that would allow me to recover more optimally from basketball? I'm comfortable with the feeling of muscle damage/repair that happens with heavy lifting, but my joints take much more of a pounding with basketball, and I'm worried about long-term consequences. |

My brother told me that since I started to work out that I should take protein powders/shakes, however, I don't think I should since I'm only 13.
Should I? Or should I not?
And if so, what brands should I get? Right now I'm looking at 100% Why Gold Standard right now. (http://www.optimumnutrition.com/products/100-whey-gold-standard-p-201.html)
If more information is needed, just ask.
Thanks in advance. |

Couldn't find anything in google scholar about negative effects of whey protein, nothing about hindering development, so I'm not sure why you're concerned because you're 13 other than you have a healthy amount of skepticism I didn't spend too long looking though. If you're really concerned about the protein powders just drink a gallon of whole milk every day instead and get huge that way ^^ |

How tall are you and what do you weigh at the moment? I can't remember exactly what I weighed when I was 13, but I assume it was a good 20% less than my adult weight. Depending on what you weigh, you should be able to reach your protein goals fairly easily with just normal meals and maybe some extra milk a day.
A quick search turned up two reasonable results:
http://www.livestrong.com/article/279521-does-whey-protein-stunt-teen-growth/ http://www.livestrong.com/article/519654-is-whey-protein-good-for-teenagers/
The two links respectively say:
Whey protein's quick-digesting, low-calorie, easy-to-mix properties make it an excellent addition to a teen's diet.
Whey protein is good for teens because of its complete amino acid profile, providing the building blocks for optimal growth. Whey protein is also good for teens because it contains branched-chain amino acids, which are special because they are absorbed directly by muscle tissue instead of requiring metabolism by the liver before muscle uptake. These amino acids allow teens to more easily pack on muscle mass during growth.
I love my whey, and from what I can tell there's probably nothing wrong with whey for you. However, you only really need a supplement if your daily meals aren't enough (e.g. they need to be supplemented), and I'd guess that at your age the meals are probably fine. |

Dont worry i was pretty much the exact same at your age. Lost a bunch of fat on the wrestling team but once i hit puberty around 16 i went from fat to tall and athletic :D
I'd just recommend a clean diet and start squatting as soon as you can. I started at your age and wish i had been more consistent throughout high school Dont worry too much about protein and supplements and shit. Although the protein you have is one i like so stick with that if you want to. |
