I am contemplating a new adventure in the Starcraft II world. I love this community and I want to add to it. I am thinking about creating a live internet radio station for gamers (starcraft gamers more specifically). I will stream live music, of all types based on requests and general favorites. I will take requests via a text in number or the website.
So why would you listen? Well you don't have to worry about switching songs, clicking "I am still listening" or any of that nonsense. On top of that I would do give aways and each day of the week (or most) would have a special topic for that day for live shows with awesome special guests etc.
The best one I have thought of so far is Gamer's Got Talent Tuesdays. On these days I will take an hour or so and go through user submitted content. This can be all sorts of stuff: Music, comedy, basically any talent that can be put into audio. The user at the end of the day who is the best will be put into a monthly contest where he/she is up against 3 others. Users will submit their votes on who the best one is and the winner receives some sort of prize: TBD.
Poll: Would you listen?Yes, Definitely (136) 85% Only on days with awesome shows (18) 11% No (6) 4% 160 total votes Your vote: Would you listen? (Vote): Yes, Definitely (Vote): Only on days with awesome shows (Vote): No
The point of this submission is to see what everyone thinks of the idea of the radio before I start spending a lot of money and time developing it. I would love suggestions/feedback. Thanks for taking the time to read my post :D!

ya i would love this! maybe you could even give updates on games going on at the time like gsl, mlg, exc. in between songs?
i find myself wanting to watch the game but want to play more and that would be amazing if i can play and still know who's up in a best of 5. ^^
cant wait to start listening 24/7. : D

i would definitely listen to this if you are going to play music and have guest appearances. i listen to the radio while gaming in the first place so i think this is an awesome idea.

sure I'd listen... unless the music is bad

Like I said I am going to create something for quick/easy requests. It will truly be the gamer's radio because I will (for the most part) meet all requests.

I would totally listen to that. If it picked up enough you could have progamers share some of their playlists, have interviews and stuff like that.
|
Yeah that would be awesome :D That's the end goal but you have to think big, but start small and stable!

2 Major Factors that will decide if I listen or not.
1. Music - It doesn't have to be my favorite band but it should not be noise music either. 2. You are from US so make downloadable content that isn't only available in itunes. (I bet I can't listen it live).

Good idea, hope you can pull it off!
Wouldn't be a bad idea to get people involved in other games to participate, so you can attract a wider audience.

I would love to get other games involved, I just have to find the right people. I am too involved in starcraft to be involved in all the other games :D.

I was going to do this most definitely. The goal is to do one podcast type show a day ranging from numerous topics. I will not only make them podcasts but I will make it so you can run them on multiple media players.
Thanks for all the feedback so far!

I think something like this already exists, I was frantically searching for the link but was unable to find it.
Radio Epic or some such, but yeah excellent idea

I am sure there are plenty of DJ's that play starcraft (I know a few). You recruit some to do some sets
|
The problem is that I don't see myself as a 'gamer', I see myself as a DotA player. Before this I saw myself as a Starcraft player. I don't care about the other games, so I think that having a show that talking about all games will attract zero interest.
There ARE plenty of shows that do what you suggest with succes though, I used to follow noobtoob on youtube, they're quite big now.

I don't think he's decided exactly how he's going to do it yet, but I'm sure if there's enough people tuning in there will be potential for more dedicated channels or something like that. The TL DotA community is going to keep getting bigger once DotA 2 comes out and there is always potential of someone doing something similar just for the DotA community.

If anything, tap it as a E-Sports show, so touching light content/news from each gaming scene wouldnt be bad at all.
|
It would be great listening to a station which plays music and that discusses starcraft news like tournament results, current ladder strategies, patch notes, team recruits etc.
Seems really promising hope you'll set it up

Ok so after posting here and on reddit I have gotten loads of feedback. Basically people have been telling me that there is no chance I can be successful. I'd like to think otherwise though. Me, being me, means I have to at least give it a trial run.
The goal of this radio station is going to be a lot of content, some audio broadcasts, reruns of awesome podcast shows etc. And then music is the second priority. It seems people are really wanting more of a "talk show" type radio than music, so the people asked and they shall receive.

Sounds like a very good idea, but there already exist an internet radio, it's called "GamerFM". It's actually much of the same consept, GamerFM can be intergrated in some CS- and TF2-servers, or you just launch it trough Winamp.
However please fire up your idea! Nice with some competition. One word of advise though, and that's that you shouldn't base your entire radio on song requests. Suddenly speed metals comes along, and most people will maybe turn the stream off. GamerFM does that, mostly because their radio-casters aren't that experienced with the broadcasting consept, and the only music they play is requests, which can be very boring to listen to sometimes. Only one lucky evening will they launch a music-theme, like 80's, or top 5 motherf***ing dubstep!

Quite honestly, I would most likely only tune in to catch news, shows and things like that. I usually prefer to choose my music for myself.
Which means, however, that I would still tune in if you get this going - so I wish you good fortune in setting this up.
I expect dubstep and rap would be the most obvious and popular genres, but I'd also suggest a section for rock/metal music to round it out a little.
