yay Kings!
Thanks for the updates btw Kralic, I feel that your efforts are going unsung. Maybe you should post your new headers as a new post in the thread because I don't think many of us really check the first page of this thread (at least I don't but my shitty tablet forces me to sometimes). |

Thats generally how an OT game ends in the playoffs. Someone takes a gamble, like pinching, loses, and the other team scores. |

Boring hockey.
I hope the KHL succeeds and creates a brand of play that is far more entertaining than the NHL forcing these dinosaurs who know fuck all about hockey to move to the bigger ice.
Daly and Bettman can't even skate.
If a real hockey man like Conne Smythe were in charge of the NHL the international ice surface size would already be grand-fathered into new arenas just as teh 200X85 was grand-fathered in back in the 90s.
If the Russian economy improves they'll be able to spend more on hockey players. Go Russian Economy Go!
Junior hockey, women's hockey and international hockey are all better than this crap.Last edit: 2012-06-01 21:44:43 |

You know what you sacrifice for a bigger rink? Seats. And there are 2 or 3 places that don't have any empty seats. |

well from 1970 to 2000 the average NHL rink size increased. i'm proposing that this trend continue.
The original Boston Garden had a smaller ice surface than the current "TD Boston Garden". And yet, the "TD Boston Garden" has a higher seating capacity.
In general for a sporting event, the larger the surface of play. The more fans can attend the event.
Potential capacity attendance goes in this order. Euro Football > American Football > Baseball > Hockey > Basketball.
Sure, UFC managed to cram 55,000 people into a domed stadium ONE TIME. But, most fans were watching the monitors above the ring and not the fighting in the ring. I've watched "Wrestlemania" in giant 50,000+ venues twice with excellent seats. For a laugh a went to the worst seats to see what it was like.. It was horrible.

| I think that for some people, just being there and a part of the event is the main thing and they don't care that much about their actual view. I've been to a few Grey Cups and it was more about partying all weekend then the seats I was sitting in. |

What I feel like is lost in the lobby for a larger ice surface is that Hockey on a larger ice surface is boring.
The game turns into death of a thousand passes with much more resolute puck control. Leads to defensive teams collapsing and offensive teams just holding the puck on the perimeter because that is where there is space/open ice.
Contrary to popular belief, larger ice surfaces actually have less offense as well as less physical play.... and just less 'plays' being made in general, because unless you institute a basketball style shot clock it is much smarter to just hold the puck in the enemy zone and wait for them to make a mistake than to try to score goals because just having offensive zone time means the other team can't score.
The smaller ice is much more entertaining, much more plays being made under pressure, more physicality, more reason to take offensive chances. |
| | But there's no sense crying over every mistake. You just keep on trying till you run out of cake |

the key to more offense is decreasing the goalie size to net size ratio back to what it was in 1980 when there was much more scoring. just by "standing there" a 2012 goalie is difficult to score on.
All those 6-5 USSR v. Canada games were far more entertaining than current NHL playoff hockey.Last edit: 2012-06-01 22:33:19 |

from 1970 to 2000 the ice surfaces increased in size along with the players. as the players continue to increase in size the pressure will be on to increase the ice surface.
they can only "slice and dice" up the surface with so many rhombuses and trapezoids and "smaller neutral zones" for so long.
increased incidence of concussion from "incidental contact" will also pressure the larger ice surface proposals

What you want isn't realistic, players haven't gotten bigger what they wear has. Bigger Ice? This isn't soccer where its 90 mins of passing. Stop complaining and enjoy the sport. To ever say hockey is boring is a joke.

Roy > Brodeur. Bernie Parent > Brodeur.
the 86 and 93 Canadiens were the 2 worst Stanley Cup champions of the post expansion era. the 11 overtime wins in 1993 was all Patrick Roy.

your facts are incorrect.
every 5 year period from 1945 to 2012 NHL players have increased in size. and the ice surfaces in the arenas on average have gotten larger over this same time period.
why did the owners makes 5,000 rule changes after the 2004 bore-fest NHL playoffs where Tampa and Calgary had ZERO lead changes ?
why? because the games were boring.
they can only slice and dice the ice surface in so many ways.. removing red lines adding trapezoids is only a band aid solution, but indicative of the fact that the NHL knows the game is ZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...........
all the Canada v. Russia games on the big international ice surface are the most entertaining hockey in the game's history and the NHL owners know it.
the nets are going to have to get bigger as well.

Martin Brodeur is probably one of the top 20 goalies of all time, but not the best goalie of all time.
Roy and Parent led average teams to Cup wins. Notice what their teams did after they left. Parent due to a freak eye injury and Roy via trade.
Brodeur was never the MVP of the playoffs, he was a very good player on great teams. |

So apparently the ratings took a nosedive for the finals compared to previously. Bettman should have put the fix in favour of Vancouver for once
Also lol@all the hoopla around where Luongo is going. Toronto, really? 5th overall pick or gtfo. |
