Guys, I think it would be good to find a way to concentrate our constructive criticism, so it´s easier for the memrise-guys to get feedback.
I would suggest two ways: 1. Poll. What feature should be next? What is the most annoying thing on the website? Did memrise help you so far? yadayada. 2. Write suggestions in the thread. After a certain day in the future, which I will tell one or two weeks before, I will collect them all and a) insert them into an extrapoll or b) just collect them.
<-----What do you guys think about this? Is it good/bad? You have other suggestions?
With this post I want to point at a website that allowes a gamelike, very fun approach to learn new languages.
"Dude, this is a forum dedicated to gaming and advertisement is not allowed, ya know?"
+ Show Spoiler + Right. Regarding the advertisement, I am not related in a way to the website that allows me to get an advantage in the case more users join. I just use it.
Regarding game forum: You could see this website as a game, with the usefull side-effect of learning many new vocabularies. It´s just really fun^^
So, let´s start:
I found some really usefull tool that helps me learning languages and makes a lot of fun. Since this site is really like a game, with points, ladderboard and so on, I want to share this site with all you other gamers. Main reason if of course the fun and competition (hence why are you here on Teamliquid), but also learning vocabularies is a very usefull thing. Learning these guys faster and easier could be usefull for our younger members still visiting the school. Or all the other people learning languages.
When you start with the language the first time, you will get 7 seeds to plant. These are vocabularies that you have to learn in the following quiz (multiple choice, english-foreign, foreign-english, type the right answer in english, type the right answer in foreign and so on. It´s all mixed up, adjusting to your performance). Great. Now the seeds are planted in your greenhouse and a timer is running down. When it reaches zero, you can harvest your plants (quiz. harder this time), then they will be in the garden. From there on you have to give them water from time to time (quiz), otherwise they will die.
The actuall great and appealing thing: You get points all the time you type a right answer! +20 for a correct multiple choice, +50 for typing the right answer without other options. There is a ladderboard. Combine this, and learning new words will become addicting.
Also you can create memes for each word. They will give you - surprise - more points. Other users can see them. If they think it´s a helpfull meme and like it, you will get more points. Additionally you will remember the word much better.
You will end up with spending ~1 hour per day learning vocabularies in a very fast way and having fun while your rank increases further and further.
The link: www.memrise.com
Background: The side was founded by a US Grandmaster in memorizing and a neurological scientist who did study in Oxford. Intelligent algorithmus, experience and stuff. The whole thing is free.
So, for all the guys out there who want to learn a language for whatever purpose, see you soon! Let´s all put [TL] in front of our names so the TOP 100 will be flooded soon^^

http://thenextweb.com/apps/2011/06/20/want-to-learn-a-new-language-memrise-will-draw-you-a-picture/
Edit1: This site is "only" for learning vocabularies. Which is the hardest work, in my opinion
Edit2: We can´t use: [TL] as Tag. Let´s use TL- instead;) thx Kaiwa! Edit2.1: Guys, we are many and this is great. You can spare me work if you put your to-be-added nicks in this format, so I just need to copy-paste TL-<nick> (<languages>) (languages optional)
Edit3: Maybe I was a littlebit vague about this. The Quiz-section is not just multiple choice, it´s also type-the-right-answer-from-your-brain, and everytime in both directions (languagewise) The test is structured to be surprising. Also, if you perform well, the testformat changes and it gets harder, while giving more points.
Edit4: Greg Detre, the co-fonder and scientific head of memrise attended in the thread - Feel free to ask questions about memory, learning and memrise (starting at page 4)
Edit5: Added the link
Edit6: Spotlighted! I am amazed TL, gj =)
Add memes! Not only they give points and help you remember, they are also a great way to demonstrate the gamers awesome creativity!
List of TL-users already using memrise (and rocking the leaderboard lol). If you want to be added, just write in the thread, optionaly with your the languages you learn^^ (Since it´s getting bigger and bigger, I spoilered it) If you wrote in the thread and not are in the list, write me a pm pls.

How can I type korean with my keyboard? + Show Spoiler +answered by 7mk: "if you havent found out yet just go to your windows regional and language settings,-> keyboard and languages -> add korean along with microsoft-IME, make sure you have the language switch thingy fixated on task bar (or make it a shortcut in the options) then switch to korean microsoft IME, then in the task list a way to switch between english and hangul will appear."
I didn´t put the TL- tag in my name when I created my account. Now I want. + Show Spoiler +Unlike other game-producing companies you have the ability to change your name more than once for free For doing this, go to "Dashboard" and then "account settings"
When I do Chinese, it gives me pinyin-pronounciation. I just want to learn the meaning first. What to do? + Show Spoiler +Answered by TheUltimate
"I'm using a temporary workaround for the first problem. You can force your harvested plants to be based on meaning tests by doing the following: - Click on the "Harvest Plants" button (or whatever it is called) - Once the URL appears in the URL bar, append the following without quotes: "&reading_pronunciation=reading" and press enter
That tells the system to only give you reading tests, not pronunciation tests, during harvesting." Last edit: 2012-02-13 01:28:15 |

| Interesting concept, I like the idea of learning a language as a memory puzzle. But does it teach grammar or just vocabulary? |

Pretty cool stuff! Thanks for sharing, going to try this for a while.
감사합니다! ^^ (This is assuming that you use it for Korean )
Edit: You can't use brackets so [TL] in your name doesn't work. TL-Kaiwa worked fine for me ;-)Last edit: 2011-11-05 23:52:04 |

| I'm curious to know if it just teaches vocabulary or grammar and concepts too. I guess even if it is just vocab it could still be useful as long as I remember most of my basic German grammar :o |

Wow this is great. Thanks so much for posting this. I've been doing pimsleurs korean for an hour and a half every day for the past month. This is great for the visual aspect pimsleur can't give me. I tried Rosetta stone but didn't like it. Its fantastic that its in browser too, I can do this at work and at school. |

It's not really that hard. Takes a few hours and you can type fast enough for the tests. |

Thanks a lot man, feeling very happy to have found this, especially with my holidays coming up soon :D
Since people are asking, my suggestions for grammar : Michel Thomas methods (sucks for Mandarin and japanese but better than nothing) for vocab/speaking : Pimsleur
Doing both of them, grammar then speaking/vocab plus this new memrise site will be very very good. I finished the 2 courses for French, Spanish and German and people I meet through language exchange online cannot belive that I've mastered so much after learning for such a short time. However it takes interest and discipline though to do it constantly to have results though.
Michel Thomas is cheaper while Pimsleur is very expensive and long (in a good way) course. You'll know how to get them though *wink* *wink*Last edit: 2011-11-06 01:52:10 |

A direct link in the thread is considered advertising, which isn't allowed on TL, but the articles about the site linked in the thread have links to the site in them. |

Great, i just started the french vocabulary and already found missing accents. I dont want to risk learning wrong vocabulary got to stick to harddisk flashcards :<
I like the concept though. If you like to learn math, science, financial stuff, etc almost the same way, maybe you'd like to visit www.khanacadamy.org !

Be warned, multiple-choice tests are not effective way to memorize stuff. I'm studying Japanese vocabulary for a half-year now and first ~3 monthes I was using Rosetta stone which is also based on multi-choice tests. After finishing 3rd level, I've started using anki (amazing tool by the way) and I couldn't remember shit from rosetta stone. Author of anki also says that he won't implement such tests in his program, because of their inefficiency.
So, my suggestion is if you use this website, try to remember answers before you look at available options, and if you can't, treat it as a failure. |

| Wow I really appreciate the fact that you shared this. I was using a website to study Korean and the "game" also has an entry from that website so I can practice the things that I study. It's great because I think the best way to learn is to just practice and make exercises. |
