( I have posted this many places, argh!) (Yes I did use search, I have tried above and beyond than what has been suggested in previous threads)
As the title states, I am currently having issues with windows vista not being able to recognise my Skyrim CD. This issue of not reading game CD's and Movies (Older game CD's seem to be read fine) existed with an older CD-ROM drive; and now persists with one I've just bought.
To test, PC reads BF2 Disc, and Oblivion, but not skyrim! Old CD"s are fine.
System Specs: DVD Drive: Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-219L ATA Driver Version: 6.0.6002.18005
OS: Windows Vista Home Premium
CPU: AMD Phenom II X2 550
RAM: 2GB (:S)
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260
Information: Drivers are up to date (According to windows) When I insert the CD, nothing happens. Upon clicking the DVD drive in My Computer, WINDOWS EXPLORER hangs. Completely. I am prompted to close the program, restart etc.
Now, after some messing around - when I click on the CD in My Computer, Windows tells me I need to "Format the disk in Drive D: before you can use it". Obviously I can't format it as it's write protected...why is it prompting me with this? I just want to run it.
Considering that this issue is present with 2 seperate CDROm Drives, I suspect it is a settings issue or driver issue in Windows Vista.
I've uninstalled and re installed the drivers, unplugged the drive physically and plugged it back in.
I have deleted upper and lower filters in the registry for the drive. (One of which contained information about InCD, a program related to Nero(?) for burning discs etc. Could this be a related issue? PC Techs installed this on my PC whilst doing some work some time ago)
I have ran the popular microsoft fixit tool.

Well first off, ewwww at Vista. You should definitely upgrade that sometime soon lol.
To your question, you should try running the disc on a different system to confirm that it isn't an issue with the disc. Sounds to me like it has a scratch or is jacked up somehow that nothing can read it properly. |

Done and done sir. The disc reads fine on another PC. I get prompted to install it and it shows up in the D: drive in My Computer.

| i cannot solve the problem, however you really dont need the disc to play. if you have a reliant internet collection you can get the game to download in 8 hours or less. i assume you have an internet connection to be posting here, and to activate skyrim at steamworks. however if you cannot download or you are running a data size plan, i dunno what you can do. |

Seeing hes in Australia downloading it is probably not an option. If it is working in other PCs you can try sticking another optical drive in your PC to install the game then launch it though steam or you could burn yourself a clone disk with another PC and try that.

I have used many workarounds before to install games, including this one. I problem is that I've bought a NEW drive, and expect to be able to use it.

Go into the device manager and disable the DVD-ROM and re-enabe it. |

you might want check the dvd region code.
go to device manager... control panel>system>hardware>device manager.
right click your dvd rom drive and click properties. somewhere in there you should have a region tab (if i remember correctly) set the region to US which should be a 1(may want to confirm the correct region code) and of course that is if you use US dvd's..
see if that helps. |

The disc wouldn't work without altering the region code. So I changed it to Australia's region code, and it still doesn't work. Upon trying to change it to the US region code as you suggest, I get an error message stating "Unable to update region setting. The drive reports that it requires media of the destination region (region 1) so please insert appropriate media and try again."
This tells me that the media (disc in question) does not require US region to run.

While this doesn't solve your issue at hand, it will let you install the game.......
If the other machine you tested it on is on the same network. put the disk in the other machine, and share out the dvd drive for the network.
Go to your machine and navigate to the other machine and run the installer through that. I've done it on some older machines i have that dont have dvd players. |

Why not go to a nearby computer store and pick up a cheap DVD drive?
Mine was only like $18 and ive been using it for 5 years. |

Use another computer and use something like ImgBurn to create a .iso file of your install media - this is an image of the disc file and is almost an exact replica of the CD, cept in a handy file.
You can then mount this file into something like DaemonTools and install like normal. It's also legal to do this, as you're creating a backup of media you already own. |

| go to device manager and uninstall the device [DO NOT CHECK UNINSTALL DRIVERS] then rightclick scan for hardware changes to reinstall device this is resolve most driver issues |

i usually dont advertise piracy but what about trying to install it on a different pc, burn the folders to a dvd, copy them to your pc and crack it.
im not 100% sure this would work because youre gonna miss the registry entries etc but its worth a try. |

That having been said, i can't help but wonder if, based on your OP, the computer youre trying to use only has a CD-ROM drive, but Skyrim is an installation DVD, in which case youll never be able to run a dvd. | Can't you copy the disk to a usb drive (since it works on a different computer)? That's what I usually does when I install things on my parents computer that doesn't have a harddrive. |
