Hey there, was lookin for a whisky thread after reading some of the beer appreciation thread and to my shock the last one was from 2004!
while i like most of the other liquors ( yay for rum& red bull! ) i really love whisky. am i alone or what?
so what is your favorite? scottish ones, us, irish or maybe something fancy? prefer the light sweet ones or peaty smoke flavor bombs?
lets talk about whisky !
what i currently have at home: + Show Spoiler +terrible quick phone pic: ![[image loading]](http://img26.imageshack.us/img26/7263/40184947.jpg) - lagavulin 12y - wild turkey rare breed - ardbeg blasda - laphroaig 10y - slyrs (bavarian single malt, visited the distillery 3months ago :D ) - blantons special reserve - blantons straight from the barrel - caol ila 27y (in the small custom bottle, will be refilled soon :>, ) and ofc - glen 12y not in picture: makers mark and various cheap or standart stuff like jack, johnny or even worse things i only use to mix (ginger ale+bourbon = niccce)

| I love a good whiskey. Unfortunately, the most expensive I can generally afford is like Red Label. T_T |

| I have some jameson that someone left in my house from a while back. I'm not a connoisseur by any standards, but it goes down nice and easy. For a man too cheap to by things to mix or chase, a liquor you can sip is a treat. |

Myself I like peaty scotch the best, but drinking Laphroaig and Lagavulin so often I opted to go for Caol Ila this time, which is interesting since to me it tastes like a blend between an Islay and a Speyside malt. I've also got some Glenlivet Nadurra (it's 16 y.o. cask strength non-chill-filtered, one of the new varieties they've been putting out) and Glenrothes. Weirdly the Glenrothes doesn't have an age on it, but it is quite good and I hardly believe it's only eight years old or something; I wonder what the deal is?
I've got Famous Grouse for anyone who wants blended whisky (I use it for mixing too though I think Johnnie Walker Black might be better for mixing since it is less "sweet" and a bit "spicy" with that Talisker flavor, but it's a tad expensive for mixing anyway). I don't drink bourbon as much but my favorites so far are Elijah Craig and Basil Hayden; I tried Buffalo Trace because a friend recommended it and I quite like it. Oh and some Jim Bean Black for mixing--it's good enough for a decent Manhattan, a really good value imo. What is it the deal with so many bourbon names starting with a "B", anyway?
Gotta have some rye too for Sazeracs or a rye Manhattan--seems like getting a fancy rye is a bit of a waste since I never drink it neat (unless I'm drinking Old Overholt to get drunk) so I like Wild Turkey.
I've got a few other liquors too, but whisky is my favorite.

Knob Creek? It's a nice bourbon--tastes almost like sweet fruit to me. Perhaps a bit fancy for a whiskey sour, but it would taste great. If you use it for a Manhattan, use a bit less vermouth than normal, since it's already a bit sweet (also always use bitters!!!) |

I love single malt. Current favorites are Lagavulin16, Oban14, Glenlivet. I once got my hands on a bottle of Smokehead. Really something if you like the taste of bonfire in your throat =)

Canadian all the way! Canadian whiskey* tends to be very smooth. I quite like Crown Royal.
*I never remember which way it's "supposed" to be spelled for which countries and it's not worth looking up |

Been drinking Bourbon and Ginger Ale lately... seem to like that the best of the stuff I've tried XD
When I'm out I might get Jack and Coke though. |

It's "whisky" for Scotch and "whiskey" for everything else, though Maker's Mark (a bourbon) and George Dickel (a Tennessee Whiskey) both use the spelling "whisky" on their labels. |

What do you mean by use bitters? And it was more so a gift, and its my first real whiskey that i've gotten. As for Whiskey sours, i've always been a fan of them since my family makes them sometimes. (granted i have no idea what they use)
ATM i have some sweet and sour mix that i hope is what i need to make a whiskey sour. lol |

If you're going to get cheaper vodka, I'd say get Sobieski. Very good. |

I only use vodka for mixing (and much less often than gin at that), and I find Svedka is the perfect combination of "tastes all right" and affordable. Good vodka is supposed to be basically flavorless anyway, so I don't see any point in buying anything more expensive (but cheap vodka can be quite nasty). If I drank vodka martinis perhaps it would make a difference, but I'm going to go on the record and say that even James Bond should be ashamed of drinking vodka martinis. Vesper martinis are quite good though--I've got a bottle of Lillet in the fridge. I'm amazed they never did any sort of promotional tie-in with the new Bond movies. A tip for making a Vesper: try adding a bit of bitters, since Lillet today has less quinine than Kina Lillet did when Ian Fleming wrote Casino Royale. I prefer orange bitters, and they help with the color too, since irl a Vesper is only faintly yellow (as seen in Quantum of Solace) and clearly in Casino Royale they added yellow food color. |

costco has a new bourbon, aged 7 years with a 103 proof.
any idea what it is?
i say this because other costco alcohols (vodka, tequila) are amazingly priced repackages of other brands. |
