| Man, I had high hopes for this movie, and I got severely disappointed, found it extremely boring. Like, surprisingly boring. At least the trailer for The Dark Knight Rises was amazing. |

It also bugs me that Vickers is portrayed to be the villan, when in fact she is the only person thinking logically in the whole film. the reason she opened the doors was so she could save her team. The infected bloke wasn't hostile, so she opened the doors to communicate with her team, and since they refused to cooperate she killed the infected bloke. As many people have said, the freaking zombie scene after that was retarded and unnecessary, all that needed to be done was show that the infection could spread, rather than it made a dead guy super strong and murderous...
Another thing I see people getting wrong is about why the engineers look different to humans despite having the same DNA. We are all taller and look different to how people looked 1000 years ago, and as the engineers massivly predate the humans it is logical that they will have changed in appearance to how we look. I kind of got that we were essentially like the android to them, except they perfected the creation process whilst we hadn't, hence the whole feelings business.
All in all I thought the visuals were spectacular, and the film started off really well. But the characters' motivations were all over the place (touching an unknown alien after finding a giant pile of dead bodies? seriously?), and how it felt stupidly rushed towards the end kinda ruined the whole film. Also why the fuck didn't the lead woman tell Vickers that there was a fucking alien in her room? Did she not think that was important at any point?
Anyway, I have a lot more things I could say about this film, but was only intending to comment on the whole android thing haha, kinda got out of hand.
EDIT: also, it seems like the only reason she said she was infertile was to get around talk of contraception. The film would literally not be changed if when she was told she was pregnant she said "I can't be, I was careful" or some shit like that, rather than saying she couldn't have children so that the younger audience aren't confused.
+ Show Spoiler +I could see this as very plausible as well- in fact it makes a ton of sense  and women care a lot about being able to have children and the guy said that "anyone can create life". One of the weaker devices of the film (seemed like it was trying to get a response out of the viewer) but still sucks for her. And it plays into irony later when you find out she CAN carry life- just not the one she intended. |

The reason I disliked Prometheus is that its story was muddled and confused, the characters continuously made horrendously dumb decisions and did things out of character, and I just generally found it to be a bit pants. I made quite a lengthy post earlier about some of the niggles, but the niggles were so widespread that it just overcomes the movie, for me.

That a lot of Hollywood blockbusters are dumb they have a simple plot that leads from one action set piece to another with fairly simple characters that you can either root for or dislike. Prometheus though is a mess the film looks good at the start but as soon as they hit the moon the film starts to fall apart. The film does not know who the bad guy is and because of that It fails to really get going and the plot is overly complicated because of this. The big reveals aren't surprising and the second half of the film feels rushed. These all lead to the story being full of holes.
Prometheus' plot isn't exactly complex either. It's certainly no more complex than for instance any MiB movie. Geographically, it's a very simple movie to follow. You're either in the Alien structure, the Prometheus or somewhere in between. The plot is basically: people go to alien planet, discover alien stuff. Some people have ulterior motives and are not above exploiting other people to achieve their goals. Then monsters kill stuff. It's a monster movie. The threat is meant to come from the outside. Prometheus does that just fine. Monsters kill shit, just like in every other movie of its genre. And I like that it's somewhat ambiguous who the internal threat is (though not really) It never "fell apart" for me. I was captivated from the get-go, and it retained its hold so well that I'm going to see it again tomorrow. Sure, I was groaning at what some of the characters were saying, but it's not an Ibsen play.. it's a monster sci fi movie. Adjust your expectations.
And I certainly had enough to latch on to - I was rooting for the female lead, and I was intrigued/rooting for David.

Scott said at comic-con that he wanted to do a sequel
he's doing Blade Runner first! Hopefully Damon Lindelof is kept away from that one .. Scott is working with one of the original script writers as far as I understand from imdb. But Scott is already 75 years old.. I just hope he has enough left him to keep going for a while. Prometheus was done in about 2 years, so he is certainly still very productive
It doesn't really matter considering Philip K Dick has been dead for years... Maybe you are hoping Peter Jackson will make a sequel to Lord of the Rings too?
While BR was based on one of Dick's books, BR isn't really a movie version of dAdoES... so Dick being dead will have little impact on the movie... |

| sick movie. I don't know what all the criticism is about, I thought it did very well creating a realistic and very human view of the events depicted. It was deep without being up it's ass about it, and had great acting, visuals, and a lot of great story hooks. Will be looking forward to the sequel for sure. |

I think your overly simplifying the plot. You claim the film is a monster movie but what exactly is the monster is it the mutant worm or the mutant geologist both of which are killed of fairly rapidly, or is the monster the Engineer which makes a 10 minute appearance at the end. All of these monsters are only minor parts of the film and the main portion of the film is made up of David being suspicious and poisoning the male archaeologist.
Your claim that this is a monster movie is in my opinion wrong when their is no monster in the film lasting longer than one (admittedly visually quite impressive) scene except the Engineer at the end. The whole film seems to lead up to him being the bad guy but the film has dragged on for so long by that point that he has very little time to be the monster in the film and the whole middle of the film leading up to him being woken up drags on for to long and is overly complicated and while the film may not be a direct prequel to Alien it still uses a lot of the same details as the original Alien films ( A female lead, only one survivor and a bad android).
A lot of the film feels unnecessary and is simply their to either fill time of kill people off. The basic premise of the film that the Engineers are bad and wanted to destroy earth could have been told in a much simpler and more elegant way without the whole Wayland is on the ship and David has ulterior motives subplot and the black goo seeding of earth nonsense. Had that happened the films could have still reached the same point of everyone being dead except Elizabeth and David and have them setting off to get more answers
+ Show Spoiler +The monsters are loosely defined, there are several of them, and the build up to them is slow - that doesn't mean it's not a monster movie at its core. And there's certainly more than one "monster" scene. There's the army snapping scene, the body-horror abortion scene which is extensive. Even the awakened engineer becomes a monster of sorts by the end. And monster movies aren't defined by the ratio of build-up-to-monster-scenes. There are monster movies where the monster isn't in very many scenes at all - like the original Alien for instance

yes, because Do Androids.. and Blade Runner aren't divergent at all, right? Blade Runner is so loosely based on Dick's story that Blade Runner has basically become this separate thing that's only tangentially related to the source material. To be honest, I don't even see the point of your post, other than that you see it as another opportunity to be snarky

The crew in Alien find a different ship (remember, there were many, many ships) with the space jockey already in position to fly out, how the queen got there could have been from the space jockey himself or the queen that's at the end of the movie, I wouldn't say that it's a direct sequel as the things that happen in this aren't seen in alien, but it answers many questions, and is ultimately still a prequel |

he's doing Blade Runner first! Hopefully Damon Lindelof is kept away from that one .. Scott is working with one of the original script writers as far as I understand from imdb. But Scott is already 75 years old.. I just hope he has enough left him to keep going for a while. Prometheus was done in about 2 years, so he is certainly still very productive
I think your overly simplifying the plot. You claim the film is a monster movie but what exactly is the monster is it the mutant worm or the mutant geologist both of which are killed of fairly rapidly, or is the monster the Engineer which makes a 10 minute appearance at the end. All of these monsters are only minor parts of the film and the main portion of the film is made up of David being suspicious and poisoning the male archaeologist.
Your claim that this is a monster movie is in my opinion wrong when their is no monster in the film lasting longer than one (admittedly visually quite impressive) scene except the Engineer at the end. The whole film seems to lead up to him being the bad guy but the film has dragged on for so long by that point that he has very little time to be the monster in the film and the whole middle of the film leading up to him being woken up drags on for to long and is overly complicated and while the film may not be a direct prequel to Alien it still uses a lot of the same details as the original Alien films ( A female lead, only one survivor and a bad android).
A lot of the film feels unnecessary and is simply their to either fill time of kill people off. The basic premise of the film that the Engineers are bad and wanted to destroy earth could have been told in a much simpler and more elegant way without the whole Wayland is on the ship and David has ulterior motives subplot and the black goo seeding of earth nonsense. Had that happened the films could have still reached the same point of everyone being dead except Elizabeth and David and have them setting off to get more answers
The monsters are loosely defined, there are several of them, and the build up to them is slow - that doesn't mean it's not a monster movie at its core
+ Show Spoiler + I'm not saying it is not a monster movie I am saying it is a bad one the whole movie is building up to a confrontation with the Engineer that is over almost as soon as it has begun basically meaning the movie is little more than a build up to a sequel. Don't get me wrong I'm not saying there weren't good parts to the movie, the acting was very good except Michael Fassbender who was exceptional and the film was visually very good as well but the actors were let down with a poor plot and script and that meant the visual effects lacked punch.
As has been said a lot in this thread the film is not a direct prequel to the Alien films but is a Standalone film set in that universe and that is where a lot of the issues come from because the film is trying to create its own place whilst having to use existing and well known material and this would be hard enough without throwing in a load more filler such as zombie man and seemingly trying to Keep some of the same plot points from the same set of films it is trying to separate itself from mainly the only survivor being the female lead and the Android having ulterior motives. The film comes across as a mess and would have benefited form it being Kept more simple as that would have allowed it to differentiate itself from the original franchise more while still allowing it to fit into the same universe. |

It is. The crew in Alien find a different ship (remember, there were many, many ships) with the space jockey already in position to fly out, how the queen got there could have been from the space jockey himself or the queen that's at the end of the movie, I wouldn't say that it's a direct sequel as the things that happen in this aren't seen in alien, but it answers many questions, and is ultimately still a prequel

Ridley Scott and co. already stated that the Engineer inside the derelict ship on LV-426 is a different one. Notice how much bigger he was compared to the one we saw in Prometheus. They stated that the Engineer we saw in Prometheus was a youngling compared to an adult form Engineer. At this point, the evolution of the xenomorph is still a mystery because of that prototype xenomorph at the end |

| This movie was fucking crazy. I don't know why everyone is being such a critic, but I went high as shit and was completely absorbed for the whole thing and the movie pretty much blew my mind. It's really pretty scary to think about the possibility of extremely unfriendly extraterrestrials that we are no match for. |

No, there is a difference. What does the chair have to do with anything? They're from the same race and operating the same ship. Look at this comparison. You can distinctly tell that the two Engineers have different sizes. They already confirmed that the Engineer in Prometheus is a youngling. They already stated that when Engineers grow older, they look different too.

So, apperently Damon Lindelof deliberately left plot holes in the film for the sake of sequelization, which I guess is a good business model, but really just left me feeling lacking at the end of Prometheus. I didn't understand the motivations or reactions of the engineers and almost nothing was explained, such as the origin of the specimens they were carrying, what significance they had to the engineers, why the engineers were planning to use them on humanity, etc. There was very little substance to the whole thing, and while it looked great and I thought it was enjoyable, it just didn't have the impact I was hoping for from Ridley's return to the Alien franchise.
Granted, the first Alien didn't outright tell us where the alien is from or the backstory of the spacejockies carrying it, but it wasn't realiant on it, nor focused on it. It was a self-contained story and focused on specific emotional atmospheres of terror, claustophobia, and struggle with the unknown. Prometheus wasn't that, its focus and themes are clearly rooted in creation, exploration, mythos, and discovery, yet it doesn't actually reveal anything, leaving the truth for a sequel. I just hope Lindelof doesn't pull another Lost here and create too many threads and questions that he can't end up answering any of them in a meaningful way when and if they do proceed with another film. |

Where/when did they confirm it? (I've not been following the movie build up), but tbh that chair might not be identical but close enough to just be a updated version, given that the original movie was made so long ago (in a similar way that the tech on the Prometheus was better than anything in Alien simply becasue it was an old movie).
Also, if they are similar/identical genetically to humans, it would make sense some are bigger than others and that younger Engineers look diffrentally to older one's, that said, we have already seen several diffrent engineers (via hollagrams) and they all looked pretty similar...
edit: also, arn't the ships suppose to basically be living creatures? Pretty sure in the making of the orignal movie Giger and Scott talked about the Space Jockey's ship as being a living creature that had died, which is where part of the insperation/idea for the walls being made of bones etc, so the chair/jockey and ship in the original Alien is simply a decayed dead version of what we are shown in Premethius, where the ship, sleaded away underground is still very much alive and hence why it looks diffrent, while still very similar...Last edit: 2012-06-09 10:17:04 |
