As some of you know (or not), Stanford launched couple of free classes this autumn.
It all started with ai-class, which recieved huge interest (over 140k people registered), then ml-class.org and db-class.org were added.
I'm participating in all 3 (to be fair, actively in only ai-class. Just don't have the time to do all the homework in time for other two, but I watch lectures). I'd say these classes are as succesful as online free education can get. Especially as a guy like me who is self-taught programmer I can really appreciate the effort they're putting into it. And I learned a lot thanks to these classes.
Anyway, this is all something you sadly missed and aim of this topic wasn't really about it.
What it is about is that Stanford (and some other unies) looked at the success of it and decided to up the stakes for next year.
They opened 16 classes for 2012. Some examples: Anatomy Game Theory Computer Security Cryptography Machine Learning
You can view all available classes at the footer of any page above.
So there you have it, you basically get 30-40 hours/wk worth of classes online and for free. How cool is that?!
P.S. No, you don't get any university credits for it.Last edit: 2011-11-30 05:39:45 |

| WOW, that's amazing. Can anyone sign up? I think this would look pretty cool on a resume, and I'm sure it would be a great experience. |

| Hmm...this looks really awesome. I think I'm going to try and sign up for Game Theory and Cryptography. It sounds like a really interesting idea. |

Signed up for Computer Security. I'll only be taking three courses at my Cal State college so this might fill up some time for me and it looks like fun!
Thanks for sharing! |

| Does anyone know if this counts for credits or if it's only for knowledge? |

only knowledge. But that's what really counts, no?
That said, I know that for ai-class there was official exam times organized in several cities, so you could theoretically get a certificate for some.Last edit: 2011-11-30 05:37:50 |

Yeah sure. I was just wondering because if it counted for credits, then I wouldn't take a full load on top of this. |

You could read any of the FAQ's that say...
10. Will I get university credit for taking this course? No.

In the US, that pretty piece of paper with a school's name on it means more than the actual knowledge associated with it. |

Sad but true... That wasn't where I was going with my questions though. |

Hey guys, game theory is an AWESOME area. If you can learn it, you'll love it. I learned a bit in my university and i consider myself as lucky for that.

| my only problem with it is that i don't get credits for it, so unless my university is willing to let me take tests or something to pass the classes without havign to retake them it would be a waste of my time adn especially my money(because id have to pay to retake the class that i already know.), though i guess learning is never a waste of time. Not just the US. The 'pretty piece of paper' gets you in the door, otherwise people have no idea what your qualifications are. That's life. |
