I'm going to try streaming again today. Apologies for the issues yesterday. My internet was just randomly dropping down to almost no upload rate causing the stream to freeze or drop out completely. Hopefully I can get some issue free games in just now while it isn't "peak time" in the UK. I was streaming on Sunday night when I had the issues which is typically a busy time for internet usage but its still inexcusibly bad considering how much I pay.
TLDR: UK internet is an absolute disgrace, a rip off where we get short changed massively in terms of upload rate and the speeds lag behind some 3rd world countries.

Three TvT VODs from my streaming session on the 5th of March. I was working on bio openers such as gasless FE followed by Marine + Siege Tank or straight up bio play. I'm planning to stream again in the coming days. I haven't streamed so much recently due to internet issues + time spent watching IEM etc.
This game begins with fairly similar openings, with each player moving towards a mirrored Marine + Siege Tank composition. After making a huge blunder with scan (I scanned an empty main!) things get even worse when a drop in my main does big damage whilst my army is out of position in the middle of the map. In order to recover I take a 9 minute 3rd base which I turn into a Planetary Fortress.
I once again get caught badly out of position whilst attempting to deny my opponent's 3rd base and find my own 3rd sieged up with the majority of my opponents army parked outside. Thanks to some patience and a 3 pronged flank attack I am able to steamroll my opponents army outside my 3rd and the game continues. Having cleaned up that army I take a large force and break the rocks into my opponent's 3rd. Stimming a marine up the ramp and seeing little resistance I stim my entire army into the 3rd area and instagib his expansion.
Overestimating my advantage an ill advised 2-2 vs 3-2 engagement takes place which I lose massively, finding myself on the back foot facing a contain at the central watch tower. Contained and almost certainly begining to fall behind economically all thats left to be done is to max out once more and look for a truely epic engagement to try and salvage the game...
Sticking with my gasless FE build I face an opponent who elects to go 1 step further and does a 4 Barracks build (with expansion). The early minutes of the game are quiet, with my opponent making pure Marine whilst I pump out a lesser number of Marines whilst teching to Medivacs and Siege Tanks. Having watch tower control I see a huge Marine army heading towards me around the 8 minute mark which could be dangerous. All that I can do is pre spread my Marine at the top of my natural ramp to gain a concave advantage and allow the maximum number of Marines to shoot at my opponents marines as they funnel up the ramp. My opponent decides not to go for the attack since I now had Medivacs and Stimpack completed.
I move out on the map with my Marine + Medivac force whilst taking myself a 3rd at the 10 minute mark. I try to stim 1 Marine into my opponent's 3rd to scout ahead of my army but I accidentally stim my ENTIRE army, This turns out to be fortuitous as there is already a 3rd expansion up at the 3rd base and I promoplty melt it with my Marine force. I get cornered inside the 3rd and I'm unable to escape with my Marines, I lose convincingly to superior Marine numbers but I'm able to fly all of my Medivacs over the rocks into the 3rd and save them all.
I have an extra base but an inferior army. What ensues is a 20 minute period of constant dropping and multi pronged aggression as my opponent tries to get back into the game via brute force...
I stick to the gasless FE build I have been working on and my opponent decides to cheese BIGTIME. Firstly I have to defend a Medivac+Marine+Hellion elevator all in build. This is quickly followed by a Cloak Banshee build, all done while one basing of course. I take heavy economic damage and my opponent takes the "standard" viable (sigh) 9 minute TvT expansion. My opponent elects for a strange unit composition, it is Marine + Siege Tank but it almost looks like mech, there are as many tanks are there are Marines...
I now have Medivacs and I know I need to go and inflict damage with a drop since I am a good 20 workers behind my opponent due to SCVs lost holding the first cheese and the follow up multiple Cloak Banshee harass. Unloading my first drop (32 Marines) into his main I notice the impact all his micro "intensive" harass has had. There is an endless sea of supply-dropped Depots as far as the eye can see. I immediately stim and clean them up before loading up and saving every marine.
Back at base I start a 3rd and I've added Marauders to my composition. My plan against mech is to go pure bio and I played that style here due to my opponents massive Siege Tank count. I load up 5 Medivacs worth of Marine + Marauder whilst positioning the rest of my units at a watch tower ready to ambush counter attack attempts. I spot a newly built turret ring around my opponents main, but I know his tanks are sieged far away outside his natural, this drop has to work...

Here is a decent sized collection of VODs taken from games played over the last 3 or 4 days. There are several VODs from each matchup including a number of lengthy TvTs featuring various stylistic matchups including Bio vs Mech, Marine Tank mirrors and Marine Tank vs Bio. There a bumper edition double VOD featuring 2 TvTs in a row versus the same opponent, twice on Antiga Shipyard. I've also thrown in a VOD of a recent Photon Cycles game (/w Skype) which is a funny custom map. I've also begun to give my VODs a star rating between 1 and 5 to give you a quick indication of how good I think the game is (entertainment + level of play). I tried to pick the best of the bunch from my recent games, hopefully some of them will be an enjoyable watch!
I open with a very standard 1 Barracks gasless fast expand into a 3 Barracks build with a fast Bunker covering the entrance to my natural expansion. I scout that my Protoss opponent has also taken a fast expansion. I continue to macro up whilst completing a full wall off infront of my natural featuring several Bunkers and a couple of Supply Depots. One stupid Blink Stalker timing later and a 3 Bunker wall-off has proven to be inadequate. The wall has been broken and we traded armies with great expense to me in terms of destroyed depots, lost SCVs (Bunker repairers) and lost mining time.
My one saving grace is that during the carnage I had teched up to Reactor'd Medivacs in addtion to researching Stimpack, Combat Shield, Concussive Shells and +1 Infantry Weapons. Armed with Medivacs I venture out from my natural and spot the Protoss mass Stalker army afk'ing near my watch tower. I stim my entire army and stutter step forward directly on top of the Stalker force. My opponent is slow to react and takes heavy losses to his almost Zealot-less army.
Smelling blood I push onwards looking to win the game outright. I melt the Protoss 3rd base and win a big engagement between the 3rd and natural, whilst taking my own 3rd back at home. I pause briefly outside the Protoss natural as my Medivacs heal up my bio army. Before I get a chance to heal up fully my army is driven back by the magic of a warp in round of Chargelots. Suddenly I'm stutter stepping all the way back to my own natural expansion, losing Medivacs and bio along the way. What looked like a won game is now seemingly very dicey as waves of Zealot + Archon are crashing against my natural expansion. Ghosts are begining to pop out now and only some miraculous EMPs will be able to turn the tide in my favour once again...
Cross Position TvZ. I open with my "standard" 2 base Marauder Hellion stim timing and it does decently. I force a cancel on the Zerg 3rd expansion, kill all his natural Spine Crawlers + Queens and trade armies - whilst taking my own 3rd. The game progresses on fairly even footing and what unfolds is some classic Marine, Tank, Medivac vs Zergling, Baneling, Mutalisk.
I open with my Marauder Hellion timing which does decent damage, but possibly not enough. I am able to trade armies and destroy the Zerg natural, but crucially I was unable to kill many Drones (which would have sealed the deal). Heavy Mutalisk play and constant suicidal Baneling busts on my 3rd base leads to a semi base trade scenario (I lose my 3rd but hold my main+nat). Some decent bio control later and the Zerg army lies in a bloody heap.
I open with a middle of the road gasless FE build this game, featuring a fast 2nd Depot wall off where I partially construct the Depot then leave it, using the SCV to scout. I trap an enemy SCV in my main using this tactic whilst building my expansion outside the wall on the low ground, thus hiding it from view and scoring myself an SCV kill. While scouting I notice a 2nd SCV leaving my opponent's base and follow it to discover what proxy cheese he has in store for me. I spot a proxy Factory and I am able to force a cancel on it. With a solid lead I poke at my opponents natural and further increase my lead by sniping an SCV which was constructing a Bunker in the choke point. A scan of the main reveals the threat of Banshee and I return home, positioning my Marines ready to intercept incoming Banshees.
I take no harass damage and storm into the midgame with a 9 minute 3rd expansion and fast upgrades. I continue to macro up Marine, Tank, Medivac whilst holding onto my lead. I position the bulk of my army at my enemy's watch tower whilst having individual Marines at probable 3rd base locations for my opponent. I am waiting ready to pounce on his 3rd base as it floats in and instagib it. What follows is a lengthy Marine, Tank, Medivac mirror where I continually prevent my opponent from taking new bases, staying one step ahead throughout.
I was very pleased with my overall play this game and strive to play at this level and above in all my TvTs.
Antiga Shipyard
This is a bumper edition VOD featuring 2 TvTs in a row vs the same opponent! Both games were played on Antiga Shipyard and each game went the distance...
In this first game I open with my standard gasless FE into 3 Barracks build. Through scouting I identify the my opponent has done a CC first build and put on some flimsy pressure which achieves little. I continue to scout having spotted an SCV leaving the enemy base at a strange angle. This scouting allows me to find a hidden 3rd base on the opposite side of the map (6minutes). I am able to quickly force this base to float away and prevent it from landing and mining. Faced with this economy cheese I immediately expand to the gold bases in the center of the map and make it my focus to prevent my opponent from landing his 3rd CC (on his 3rd expansion spot).
What follows is classic Bio vs Mech with me enjoying a 3-4 base advantage and preventing the opponent from landing his 3rd CC next to minerals for a good 10 minutes plus. After maxing out with a Mech army on 2 bases and constructing a ridiculous Turret + Sensor Tower ring my opponent slowly pushes and secures his 3rd. He is only a stone's throw away from my gold bases now and things begin to look bleak after a terrible engagement outside his 3rd where I lose my entire army in an instant.
Thankfully due to my increased base count and incredible gas income I have an ace up my sleeve. I roll out my mass Viking + Battlecruiser army just in time to save my gold bases and immediately force a GG. I had also been secretly double upgrading Air Weapon + Armor which would only be noticed if my opponent had clicked a Medivac and seen the increased armor (not a common play).
In this second match my opponent plays almost identically except for some notible improvements in his play which cause more difficulty. He decides to dispense with the economy cheese and once again focuses on a fast 2-3 base max Mech army. By building a faster turret ring my drops are also shut down so I inflict no damage and fail to prevent the 3rd from being mined this time around.
I once again play Bio vs Mech and go for a massive base count with huge gas collection. I set up a flismy contain at the central watch tower which is easily crushed and much to my surprise my opponent marches forward, rolling his tanks to my natural looking to end the game. I ambush the army just outside my natural but my army is still pulverized. I have the Viking count to grab air control now, but the Battlecruisers aren't "operational" yet ^^. Some frantic Landed Viking vs Tank engagements buy me time untill my 1st 3 BCs pop out together, putting my opponent on full retreat. 3 BCs quickly become 10+ (I had 6 or 7 Starports) and with the help of my "surprise" air upgrades my BCs once again demolish any resistance, forcing a second GG.
Photon Cycles
This is a TRON like custom game played from a 3rd person perspective, following behind your vehicle. As you drive you leave a trail (with gaps in it). Any vehicle that makes contact with a trail or the side barriers will be destroyed. The winner of each round is the last surviving vehicle. We played a massive Photon Cycles game (in a large Skype call) with several WoW buddies from the Hydramist community + some stream viewers. Its worth giving this custom game a try if you haven't already!

I had some issues with the stream yesterday as a result of installing Xsplit beta 7. Basically the new version had insane CPU usage and the picture looked worse than usual (illegible text etc.). I've gone back to beta version 6 now and I'm trying out the 'Game Source' feature. Streaming now 14/3/2012 2330 GMT

Hi sorry for the lack of streaming over the past ~10 days, its was caused by a number of factors, the main one being dodgy internet due to maintenence work. The work is set to end by the 3rd of April which is when I plan to start streaming properly again. During the down time I've made several adjustments which will affect my play, mainly mechanical things such as control group usage, hotkey bindings etc. Some changes include:
Rebinding Control Group 9 and 10 (yes I was pressing 9 and 0) to 'Q' and 'W'
Rebinding the Lift + Land building key to Spacebar (L was just a random key on the right of the keyboard...)
Looking at rebinding the 'Load' and 'Plantery Fortress' keybinds for similar reasons (O and P are just more random keys on the right side)
I also need to start using the load function more on Planetary bases, I never even think to protect my SCVs from attack by loading them into the CC...
Alternate second keybind specifically for raising depots (cue comedy depot related losses)
Side mouse button bindings for camera locations ('Mouse Forward' and 'Mouse Back')
I will be trying to always use location binds to return to my base for building depots etc. rather than double tapping the CC binds or a Barracks, Factory etc. bind. This is one less keystroke, doesn't select a pointless unrelated building, and always gets the same camera position - which may not be the case late game with multiple CCs and production buildings located outside the main.
Increased scroll speed
I'm looking to minimize scrolling by using location binds, mini map clicking and double tapping unit control groups. Some scrolling will be inevitable at times and I've tried to make the speed less painfully slow but still controllable.
So basically a lot of fundimental changes with the aim of having better mechanics. playing faster and having a better foundation upon which to build. I forsee lots of silly building lifting and depot related losses but I think ultimately the change will be beneficial. The main things I need to work on mechanically I feel are minimizing screen scrolling, and efficiently navigating the camera back to my base + building required structures whilst microing a battle.
I'm also hoping to have a different approach to some of my matchups + new builds for when I next play. I was hoping the recent MLG replays would have been released by now for a bit of inspiration, but they're being awfully slow with them this time. I'm planning to try some later CC builds in TvT, possibly some 1 base all ins and to explore mech once again. I feel the 1 Barracks FE into 3 Barracks build is very exploitable, particularly on ladder. It is very squishy against 1 base tactics in my experience which I had put down to my bad play, but after recently watching Polt's IPL ToC games:
Where Jjakji beat his 1 Rax FE > 3 Rax 3 times in a row with a 1 base all in
I decided that the build has some difficulties, as does Thorzain's similar bio opener. It puts a high APM and multitasking requirement on you for dealing with Banshees, has vulnerabilities vs 1 base all-ins (particularly Siege Tank based) and doesn't really get you particularly ahead (you have some Barracks, gz).
So once again apologies for the gap in the streaming schedule and I'm aiming to get things up and running again this week!
TLDR: Internet issues (maintenence work), plan to stream again April 3rd onwards!

I don't know if any1 is familiar with UK internet, but basically its in a shite state of affairs, a bit of an embarassment compared to our neighboring countries whilst being incredibly over-priced to boot. I have 2 options available to me:
Virgin Media - "Up to" 100Mb download, 10Mb upload
'BT Infinity', a 40/4 Fiber Optic service is being rolled out across the country with there being a list showing when it arrives in your area. The list covers 'till the end of 2013 and my area isn't even on the list. So basically I have no real choice, its 90s technology copper phone line ADSL, or Virgin Media. 40/4 for Fiber Optic is also a joke btw. The reason its so slow is because they only bring the Fiber Optic cable to the 'cabinet' on street corners and then from there individual houses are connected through those same crappy old copper phone wires.
I couldn't care less about 100Mb download, I'd much prefer a more balanced connection such as 50/20 or something, but the 10Mb upload speed was important to me. The main selling point however was the "unlimited" aspect of this expensive 100Mb package. This meant I could stream (and watch streams, download Steam games etc.) without worrying about my internet suddenly being crippled due to some 'Traffic Management' "fair use" policy. I'm not the type to sit and file share 24/7, I think those people are scum and are clearly abusing the system, but I don't want to be worrying about my daily MB downloaded and so on.
FASTER INTERNET FOR ALL ZOMG
The reason I've not been streaming recently is because Virgin Media (VM) have been doing work on the internet. They have been working on doubling the speed "for free" for all users on packages below 100Mb (100Mb customers are meant to get a tiny price cut). This has been a big PR drive with an advertising campaign featuring Usain Bolt:
You would think that in order to accomodate this speed increase they might be upgrading their infrastructure, purchasing increased bandwidth from Linx etc. Nope. Basically what they've done is snuck in a nasty little 'Traffic Management' policy on the quiet alongside this speed doubling charade:
(click the thumbnail for the full picture)
What does it mean?
Basically what they've done is expanded their 'Subscriber Traffic Management' (STM) policy to also affect 50Mb and 100Mb customers, customers on their 2 most expensive packages. Basically what this does is massively slows down your internet once you reach a "fair use" threshold for upload and/or download. One of the main (advertised) selling points of these top-of-the-line packages was their freedom from STM. Now a quick glance at the chart will show you how unrealistic and restrictive the 'Fair use cap' limits are for upstream and downstream. Basically for my 100Mb package:
After downloading 10GB the download is reduced 50% (to 50Mb at best) for 5 hours
After uploading 12GB the upload is reduced 75% (to 2.5Mb at best) for 5 hours
The last game I purchased through Steam was 17Gb and took roughly 20minutes to download. People have worked out that it will take 13 minutes to download 10GB on the 100Mb package, at which point the speed will be halved for 5 hours (lol). So basically it isn't really 100Mb, its 100Mb for 13 minutes and then its 50.
***NOT 100% sure about the maths, need to take a proper look at it later ***
The upload is of more concern to me as someone who streams. My stream bitrate is ~2.5k. I'm not entirely sure what the average bitrate of my stream is (I wasn't concerned about it because I was on an 'unlimited' package F**K). I calculated that if my average bitrate was 3000, that I would get 500 minutes of streaming before hitting the 12GB cap. I think 3000 is quite conservative for a 720p stream with 2.5k bitrate, its far more likely to be nearer 4000 taking into account SC2, Skype etc. giving closer to 5hours of streaming time. After reaching the cap my upload will be cut to 2.5Mb at best. This isn't really adequate bandwidth for running a 720p stream whilst playing SC2 and being on Skype. 1080p is of course completely out the window as well.
This was an unannounced change that they basically shuffled through the back door whilst distracting us with the 'double speed' marketing. I didn't even get a letter/email/phonecall explaining it, I found out by trawling through the VM forums.
My stream, my contract with VM, my alternatives?
As far as streaming goes I'm going to have to just try streaming one day and monitor my upstream, look at my average stream bitrate and find out how long it takes me to hit the "fair use" cap. I estimated a couple of hours is what I'll get before having to worry about the cap, but I'm not sure yet. Either I have to hope that my average bandwidth usage is lower than 2.5Mbps so I can continue streaming after the cap kicks in, or that my usage is actually lower than expected such that I get many hours of stream time without hitting the cap. A third option is trying to stream at stupid hours (like when I wake up in the morning *yawn*). I guess the next step is to try streaming and see how long I last before hitting the cap, and then seeing if its playable while capped...
I recently signed an 18 month contract with VM. There may be some wiggle room to get out of it at the moment but the problem is, what are my alternatives? As stated earlier just ADSL with terrible upload where 720p streaming isn't even possible in the first place. So no real alternatives. This is one of the main problems with UK internet, the lack of competition. There is basically 2 providers; BT and Virgin Media. Lots of companies lease the BT line and sell their own packages but its still basically BT, just with worse customer service because you're going through a middle man rather than dealing with BT directly.
On the continent
I speak to people from Sweden etc. and they just roll around laughing at these stories about UK internet. The idea of a 10:1 Download:Upload rate is alien to them, as is this 'Traffic Management'. Most of them have been on a 100/100 package since something insane like 2005. 100/10 is the 'UKs Fastest Broadband' and it costs me £39.50 a month...
How is the internet in your country? What is the fastest package?
How many ISPs are there, is there competition? I have basically no alternative to VM.
How expensive is your internet package?
Do you have usage limits? Are they fair?
Upload being 1/10th of the Download rate, have you ever heard of that nonesense?
Apologies if I got my bits and bytes mixed up at any point during that The "first world problems" meme also sprang to mind but I don't like being scammed and I thought it was pretty shady the way they gave with one hand and took with the otther, a common VM practice.
Stream status: UK ISPs are money grabbing scumbags, I'm going to try streaming and see how long I last before hitting my "fair use" cap (its not fair, not by a long shot). I'll let you know when I turn it on!
