What is Fashion?
Simultaneously art, personal expression, and a mixed media that encompasses the overall aesthetic of the human body, fashion can be interpreted in multiple ways. For many, it is simply “how to impress” – filled with a multitude of rules to be followed and a statement to be made. For the more initiated, it is the ultimate form of social identity; you judge what you see, so one controls what others are able to see. Yet still, for some, fashion is an art to be mastered.
I feel this thread leans in the direction of the first interpretation the most. Most of those that post simply need advice on how to dress themselves to be more “grown up,” or “professional.” We are here to help. Don’t be scared – how you present yourself is important to success in today’s society, and fashion is more than just clothes. Every part of your visual, and sometimes beyond, goes into how you are perceived. From your clothing to your hair, from personal hygiene to the way you walk, and sometimes even how you smell (or for the lucky, taste) can go into your presentation.
I only ask that you post basic information about yourself – height, weight, measurements (instead of body type!), basic lifestyle (student, working, etc), and the area you live in. This is to ensure you get the best advice tailored to you! There’s no point in being recommended a down coat if you live in Southern California and ask for a “jacket for the cold.” For those in the latter two groups, we welcome you. I hope everyone can be within the second group – aware of one’s perceived social identity and caring for how they represent themselves. For the select few who go beyond a personal tie in and look into the world of runways and designers, we love you just as well.

+ Show Spoiler +This thread closing because of people making fun of each other's opinion on what's fashionable and what's not... because cultures are different and some people have clashing societal perspectives on fashion. And some people think it's stupid.
I'm totally open to hearing different people's ideas, as long as we can all remain open-minded ^^ |

| Really the extent of my "fashion" sense is nice leather dress boots with jeans and a button up shirt. Throw in a blazer if it's not molten hot outside (I live in Florida) and you can show up looking good for just about anything. |

| The second peacoat, the Kenneth Cole from macy's, look pretty good. It looks like it runs a tad short and I perfer slightly shorter peacoats but that just depends on your taste, body shape, etc. While some of j crew's items are nice, spending over $200 for a peacoat is way too much. I bought my last peacoat for less than $90 at uniqlo three years ago and it is still in excellent shape. |

| I actually just bought the Kenneth Coal Reaction in charcoal because I needed a more professional winter coat for work. I like it so far, but it's really my first winter coat that isn't a ski jacket or leather jacket (just graduated in may), so take that for what it's worth. |

| Anyone have tips on color schemes? I'm getting kind of tired of blue, black, white and different shades of. Accenting an outfit with a different color seems to be fairly easy, but actually coming up with an outfit that utilizes colors besides these has been a problem for me. I personally think those dark colors are actually rather fitting. |

| Speaking of fitting clothes, try a dark colored girls shirt sometime. It may seem really gay, but most people will not notice it. |

Definitely start with neutral colors like the ones you mentioned -- they're more versatile until you expand your wardrobe to a large enough size. Once you start experimenting with different colors, a general rule of thumb I've been told is you can wear one piece of ridiculous clothing in an outfit (whether it's something like a brightly-colored tie or pair of socks or the jacket that's so ugly it's good-looking). I can't really give advice on specific color schemes, though -- just look for stuff that catches your eye, try it out, get a friend with a good eye to critique for you. I'm still trying to build up my own wardrobe, so I've stuck to mostly greyscale, brown and blue with a hint of purple/lavender as my "accent" color. |

If anyone can identify that cool sweater flash is wearing in the tossgirl interview.. that'd be sweet.. hah.. although, I think I prefer 1/4 zip sweaters, that one is still pretty sweet.

| Different fashions work differently for different races and people with different builds. Seems quite hard unless you tell us your build and race I guess. Last edit: 2012-01-27 17:33:37 |

| Recently picked up a nice red coat (not trenchcoat). Its a bit on the darker side but as a change from your usual black, navi and greys its quite nice. Pair it with a nice light colored scarf to stand out a bit more. |

what is this ? Take what you like and what you feel most comfortable in. If we all choose to follow a specific pattern of thinking ( fashion is included in culture-way of thinking ) we don't evolve. If you want to be perceived in a good manner by shallow people with no principles that's .... pfff.

If you don't care about fashion them just don't post. There are plenty of people who do as can be seen by all the replies to JWDs blog. Let us enjoy talking about fashion and appearance and go do whatever you like. |
