First of all, I am not sure if that is true. Second, why expensive New York? Third, MLG only has to pay for the trip because teams don`t pay that much money to fly their players to New York if there is a) no live audience and b) only very few viewers via livestreams. Teams want as much exposure as they can get to make their sponsors happy. This isn`t the case for this event and that`s the only and very simple reason MLG has to spend that much money.
Why, Because they stadium they are building isn't done yet. MLG Adam confirmed on SOTG today that cities are in a bidding war to have MLG build there studio/stadium in there area. No live audience, because it's being hosted in there office, Also this is ONLY A TEST.
So they are testing to see if PPV is viable even though the circumstances atm are pretty bad. I'm pretty sure that more people would be interested if there was a crowd and run as a large event instead of a 32 player tournament in a office. |

new yorks where their offices are, the venue theyre constructing isnt ready yet. this saves renting out a place to host the event. they have to pay the trips out for this type of event because korean teams dont have much money, they cant afford to send many players to the us frequently. again, as sundance said, this is something they have to try. they cant just stick a price tag on the old free stuff. so theyre seeing if the community is happy to pay to see a lot of top koreans competing in an international event, with all the other trappings. if you're not, dont buy it and they wont do it. |

it's not a test, it is just dumb. they called it a "test" after they had to admit that their stadium isn't rdy yet and their PPV gets shit stormed. it's just an excuse for poorly handling the situation.
if they wanted to make a "TEST" they would have announced it as a TEST. i don't understand people that take the words of a CEO or any marketing manager without a question...

because that's what they do. sundance stated that esports isnt profitable, thats pretty generally true.
no, it is not. MLG is not profitable (enough), they are the ONLY ONES whining and begging for charity. i don't see any other tourneys asking for money aside GSL. and MLG has no reason to compare itself to GSL, they lack very much content to do so. esports boomed last year on the back of people putting out free content to build their brands and investors dumping money in on the potential of the industry.
wrong. esports boomed the last 13 years because of people putting out free content. this IS esports. if there wouldn't be passionate people putting their time into esports it wouldn't exist. both those groups now need to start seeing some return or its stupid to continue to put time and money into esports. advertisement and sponsorship provides a lot of money, but clearly not enough as thats what we've been going on for the last year and these companies are not showing a profit.
not enough for MLG... MLG is not esports. and to take hellspawns comparison: just like esports didn't die with CPL it won't with MLG. if the industry is going to grow and sustain itself people need to accept the idea that they have to pay for the products that are being put out there. lol, no. why should we? there will always be free streams, advertisement money can support that. advertisement money cannot support flying 32 players to new york and putting on a show with high production values and the biggest casters and players.
this "show" has no value. there is not a single reason to hold this event offline and then don't let any fans or even journalists in. and it's true that advertisement won't be enough to support it. that's why you have SPONSORS or couple it with an event that's already taking place, like ComiCon, GamesCom, PAX, etc... or you let teams pay because they want to attend your prestigeous tourney to represent their own sponsors (this has been working for years now...). this only shows MLG has no clue about business at all. nowhere has mlg begged people to give them charity. theyve said that if you want to see a high quality tournament you're gonna have to pay for it, or they will not be capable of running it. if people arent willing to pay for that it means that esports isnt ready to be a big thing yet and everyone will have to be satisfied with smaller tournaments and streams.
if you inform people two weeks prior to the tournament that it will be PPV, you have a very bad business plan. and begging is exactly the right word for this. thats not to say mlg made this transition perfectly, at all. but people saying theyre asking for charity and the people who get all self righteous and annoying about having to pay for stuff should go fuck themselves.
in short: MLG fucked up. perhaps the people that demand that much should stfu too? Otherwise it may end like the MYM DreamTeam. On February 22 2012 20:53 Aunvilgod wrote: Uah Liquid should stop covering MLG and then this nightmare is over.
i agree on this. MLG Winter should only be covered when the VODs are released.
they arent asking for charity... theyre saying if you want a high quality product then you're gonna have to pay for it. if you dont, you're happy seeing a handful of koreans and one stream, then dont pay for it and it wont be there. thats not whining and begging, thats stating the reality of the situation. just because no one else is even giving you the option doesnt make mlg the bad guys. the rest of your post is just you being obstinate so theres not much point in addressing it point by point. the show has value if people feel that it is worth paying for. if they dont we'll stick with lower quality content that can be supported by sponsorship alone. but that model hasnt been working for years. its been limping along for years. theres a reason these companies arent profiting and a ton of them have died.
well i agree with you, it is stating the reality. but it is only MLGs own reality and not esports as a whole!!! the show would have the value if people paid, but if you don't plan on having a crowd and journalists on site why make an offline event at all? this is just bad business on MLGs part. same with the announcement of PPV. if it would have been their intention to run this toruney sponsored by the community (AKA PPV), they should have said so in the announcement of Winter Arena. apparantly they didn't for whatever reasons and delayed the PPV announcement to be 2 weeks before the event. that's an insane business fail by MLG. IF they had this tourney planned out they should have thought about the financing beforehand and not just now realise that they are missing the money to run the tourney. and IMHO esports hasn't been limping. it was the other way around. there was an insane amount of tourneys last year and even the revival of some old ones. i'd go as far and say the tournament market is pretty much oversaturated at the moment.
it is the reality of esports as a whole. you other tournaments are rolling in money? is that why it takes esl 6 months to pay prize money if we're lucky? gsl's only free content to non koreans is a low quality stream at bad times. if sponsorship based esports is so succesful why do we have to pay for their vods? this isnt really new and it probably is necessary for what most people want from esports. they just fucked up the publicity aspect of it.
as for why not online, online tournaments suck. latency makes cross server results meaningless, there isnt a completely sure way to know that no ones hacking, scheduling is a nightmare, and it lacks the excitement of a live tournament. even if there isnt a crowd cheering having cameras on the players and an actual presentation is far better than faceless replay broadcasts.

He gave a very compelling argument, unlike yourself.
MLG is not esports. Furthermore, if companies are not profiting and dieing off as you say, why is the SC2 scene so packed full of great tournaments.
Sorry , but you seem very biased for obvious reasons, I guess it is in your interest for MLG to have more money isnt it. ie. another MLG ass kisser (due to self-centred reasons).
After all, isnt the point of esports to get bigger and bigger, that means accessability, something EVERY OTHER TOURNAMENT understands. MLG are trying to do something that is plain moronic.Last edit: 2012-02-22 21:58:50 |

It's actually sad/ironic to see so many people insulting themselves in this thread by looking at a title and drawing conclusions. The article actually has some well made points whether you agree with them or not. He went a bit too far in some assumptions but please stop with the fake outrage. It's so incredibly sad to see people get outraged over another persons opinion.
It's also kind of tragic to see predominately americans supporting MLG through thick and thin and swedes supporting 100% of what Hellspawn says.
And for anyone calling hellspawn "some idiot" or whatever. You need to educate yourself on what that guy has done for esports with Dreamhack. He's actually more like the Sundance of sweden (except with more experience) and not some random raging columnist.Last edit: 2012-02-22 21:59:44 |

You should approach esport as any other sport. Soccer, Tennis, Football, Basketball, whatever. Now imagine what would happen if Arsenal London would CLOSE THEIR ARENA AND WANT MONEY FROM THE FANS TO WATCH IT. The money they would gain from the people watching the game would in no way cover the cost of rebuilding the burned, crushed arena.
american football and baseball at least charge for attendance, i wasnt aware that was unusual. and according to the internet tickets to watch the next arsenal game start at 179 pounds?

they arent asking for charity... theyre saying if you want a high quality product then you're gonna have to pay for it. if you dont, you're happy seeing a handful of koreans and one stream, then dont pay for it and it wont be there. thats not whining and begging, thats stating the reality of the situation. just because no one else is even giving you the option doesnt make mlg the bad guys. the rest of your post is just you being obstinate so theres not much point in addressing it point by point. the show has value if people feel that it is worth paying for. if they dont we'll stick with lower quality content that can be supported by sponsorship alone. but that model hasnt been working for years. its been limping along for years. theres a reason these companies arent profiting and a ton of them have died.
MLG are trying to do something that is plain moronic.
VoDs are available after a week, so there goes your argument. |

no, it is not.

No live audience, because it's being hosted in there office, Also this is ONLY A TEST.
it's not a test, it is just dumb. they called it a "test" after they had to admit that their stadium isn't rdy yet and their PPV gets shit stormed. it's just an excuse for poorly handling the situation. if they wanted to make a "TEST" they would have announced it as a TEST. i don't understand people that take the words of a CEO or any marketing manager without a question...

That's a mistery to me since Arsenal is doing shit lately. I see what you mean but they don't charge for watching at your TV do they? That I think the biggest problem is for most people. Not only do we have to watch at horrible times if we want to watch it live (unavoidable for europeans like myself) but we have to pay for the content even though we're home at out computer.
On the other hand live content in sc2 isn't really that different from broadcasted content.
Maybe MLG needs this to survive and in that case they probably don't have a choice. But when people accuse viewers of "watching expensive content for free" I get kind of impatient. Trying to guilt customers into buying an unproven product with the argument that you have been given stuff you shouldn't have is really a low blow and borderline idiotic.
I don't claim that MLG has stated any of that but rather the supporters that want to try and undermine viewers like myself. I actually bought Steelseries products to support EG and Steelseries for what they do. Am I supposed to feel guilty for having watched free content when it's presentet to me? |

the rest of your post is just you being obstinate so theres not much point in addressing it point by point. the show has value if people feel that it is worth paying for. if they dont we'll stick with lower quality content that can be supported by sponsorship alone. but that model hasnt been working for years. its been limping along for years. theres a reason these companies arent profiting and a ton of them have died.
You should know that MLG charges for attendance to their events... Was it 40 or 50$ dont remember. |

| Honestly, if the press things that they were givin the finger by neither allowing them to be at the live venue nor encouraging them with free passes, then I wish they would have the backbone to just drop any coverage regarding this event. |
