Possibly not the most popular, but I think the difficulty of it really makes the player value each accomplishment and level gained.

In Diablo, you level up to 2 when you kill maybe 5 enemies. In BG, or any strict DnD adaptation, it takes hours to level up to level 2. This encourages exploration, proper resource management, and more focus on the character than simple DPS.

That is what made BG1 so beloved; people had invested so much time and care into their character and party that when you finally FINALLY beat it, you really felt like you had had a worthwhile experience.

I agree that what you're talking about is frustrating, but I'm willing to take that as part of the game. How I long for an actual hardcore MMO based on strict DnD rules, although I don't know how 4th edition works.

The problem with DnD, from a video gaming viewpoint, and why I didn't care as much for Throne of Bhaal, was that it's based on characters staying dead once they die. A high level character has a good chance of being raised, but at low levels, forget about it. Thus, high level characters, items, and abilities are rare, wondrous, majestic things. Providing a challenge for a party of level 20 characters requires truly god-like opposition, and it's a really difficult proposition to scale from one extreme to the other like that.

This is the problem with games like WoW, that is, they become a grind for gear instead of being able to focus on true Role-Playing and continuous story, which is what make the BG series, or other DnD inspired titles like Planescape:Torment so wonderful and rare. I was extremely disappointed by Neverwinter Nights; the graphics and mechanics of the game were great, but the story was just terrible.

I for one love NWN and dont find the story bad at all. I liked the political aspect of the rivalry between Luskan and Neverwinter and some of the quests in the first act were really good in that regard. After that it more or less regressed to the typical RPG dullness of having ancient races and such but overall it was a good effort.

I agree but also disagree in a relevant way

Its about constraints. A book has less constraints on it in you r mind. A movie defines and fixes so much more than a book does. I think books are probably 'better' because you brain knows what it likes and creates things in its image ...

But yeah i think waaaay too much resource goes into eye candy.

Text based adventures are still highly absorbing ... i think that has been lost ... detailed world has become the definition of immersive. I dont think that is true though. Skyrim was very cool, but i dont think i was immersed after the first 8 hours or so.

100% agree

King of Dragon Pass, google it up. Didn't sell well, but it sure deserved to. Text based kingdom management game with a lot of roleplay and hand drawn picture per scene to just give an idea. Our own minds are always the best source of entertainment, reading well written story >>>>>>>> any graphical gimmick the "next gen pc title" ever brings out.

If I wanna see life-like graphics, I take a look outside the window...
If I want to get immersed in an adventure, I read a book.

Hmm my favourite series of all time, don't hold much hope for it being very good considering the simplification of today's games though. Shame I'm already sold!

I must agree with lol_robot here - Neverwinter Nights was a huge letdown for me; It was marketed at the time, as a continuation of Baldurs Gate (You could even load your BG-characters into Neverwinter Nights). It's problem was (for me), that it completely took out the party-element - A couple of AI-controlled Henchmen was all it was really.

I agree that Neverwinter wasn't a bad game by any means, I enjoyed playing it, after swallowing that this wasn't a continuation of the Baldurs Gate series.

The 2d engine that was Infinity Engine was maybe very primitive, but it gave such a vibrant feel to the game: Every map and area you walked around in, was hand painted and had loads and loads of detail to it. It was quite a downgrade to play Neverwinter Nights for me, even though it switched to 3d - 3d is good, but it wasn't exactly detailed like the Baldurs Gate graphics were. To me, the Neverwinter Nights graphics looked very simple and 'empty' somehow, where as Baldurs Gate was filled to the brim with little details

All this negativity

A new fucking BG is coming out guys, be excited! If you go into it negative like "IT WILL NEVER BE GOOD IT'LL JUST BE CASUALIZED" you'll never like it no matter how good it is.

But it will. It's going to be a watered down version with new publishers, mergers, and the current trends in the gaming industry. They're trying to capitalize on the name recognition.

I'll keep my eye on it though it's going to be worth a look.

Shadowy Figure- Raise Dead : Infinity Engine

For years, I clung to the memory of it. Then the memory of the memory.

And then... it returned. Better than it was before.

Pore over the tapestries and works of art hanging from our walls if you wish, Child of Bhaal... perhaps you will find a clue. But patience, ah... patience would reveal it all.

My english isn't the best, but im assuming that "Pore over the tapestries and works of art hanging from our walls if you wish, Child of Bhaal... perhaps you will find a clue" means that another hint is hidden within the background-portraits of the sites.. I'll try and mess around with the colors abit and see if i can find something )

So happy that its the good old Infinity Engine man... Hand drawn 2d areas are made out of sweet victory

Edit: I have played with every possible slider to change colors/contrasts etc. in PS for both the background and the logo.. Can't find anything

The graphics are dated by now but everything else is still excellent even by today's standards, seriously! It's the modern RPG's that compare poorly in many aspects.

I think (hope!) he meant that BG2 was created with a completely different approach to quality and attention to detail than modern games are. It's a game from a time without DLCs, without outsourced support, where companies actually created finished products and major publishers hadn't yet swallowed and suffocated countless developers and franchises. And even by those standards, it was a jewel.

Perhaps my dislike of the story is due to the voice acting and dialogue. Everything was overacted and lacked subtlety, as did the characters. Oh, grouchy guard captain who doesn't like you? (I had to look up his name: Desther is who I was thinking of) To avoid spoilers, let me just say that the way his character developed had me facepalm SO hard.
