New Baldur's Gate

It's an isometric, party based RPG based on the AD and D ruleset. Starts with an orphan in a cloister and ends with....

Well. Significantly more than that. You can import your character from the first one to the second and then to the expansion. Some of your items carry over and, in fact, some of them can combine into something awesome, an easter egg accessible only to people who played one character through all three. Combined, there's easily 200 hours of gameplay for a single playthrough. The reason they're well thought of is, other than the limitations of the Infinity Engine and the D and D ruleset, there's almost nothing that's not completely perfect.

Baldur's Gate 1, 2 and ToB, plus Planescape: Torment, are probably the four best western-style RPGs ever made.

I would put one or both of FO1/2 above BG1 and ToB. ToB in and of itself didn't add THAT much to the BG2 experience.

I would also put Arcanum up there, but lots of people would disagree with me.

EDIT: I would also say that I would never consider playing Arcanum without the fan patch that fixes a ton of the bugs. But I think that's fair given that I also would never play BG1 without one of the mods that ports it to the BG2 iteration of the Infinity Engine.

Arcanum's interface killed it for me.

I agree that BG2 and P: T are not really on the same level as BG1 and TOB. After those two things are up in the air.

The whole thing is a seamless story. BG1 captures the D and D experience better than any game ever made, IMO. ToB is what an expansion should be. So really that list is BG 1, BG2SoA and ToB together, and PST as the three best.

I hate to be the guy who crashes this party, after 16 pages of Baldur's Gate love (Oh god I wants a new one so bad) But sadly Atari's "big" announcement is a development contest for indie developers... $100,000 for the best Pong iOS game by an indie developer and a contract with Atari. Check it out https://twitter.com/#!/search/%23PongDevChallenge So yeah, no Baldur's Gate (atm).

Edit: This doesnt mean Baldur's Gate wont be out... Just not the annoucement implied by the OP... There's this teaser on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=wpPU-MtBqrA ... So we shall see.

Yup that announcement probably has nothing to do with Baldur's Gate. Trent Oster on the other hand is sneaky and he has admitted that they are up to something and that it's "a big one" When people try to get information from him about why the website is registered in his name he's very mysterious. As I've said before, check out his recent tweets and his blog.

Man, I'll laugh so hard if it's just an iPad version... BioWare are trolling so hard if so since they are leading people to believe it's a new BG with mysterious tweets etc, they must realize NO ONE will be happy to hear about an iPad BG XD

I would buy it if that was the case - But I still feel like it would be a huge dissappointment...

I really really hope its a PC-game; The fact that they are 'reviving' the Infinity Engine really adds to the exitement for me.. That platform has been used for so many great games

Well, BIOWARE, hasn't made any tweets AFAIK. Trent isn't with Bioware anymore

But yeah I agree it would pretty much be trolling. I also think it would be a hugely bad move because it's already possible to play it on the iPad as someone pointed out and hyping an iPad version this much seems very silly.

Beamdogs have made a quite a few hd remakes etc have they not?

OK I'm confused. Let's assume that this really happens and BG3 does come out. Obviously since its 2012, the graphics are gonna be much better. But thesedays, CRPGs tend to be 1st person / slightly 1st person view like Dragon age or Skyrim, meaning no more hawk-eye view like the BG series themselves.

Would it work?

I actually appreciated the hawk-eye view, but I don't think I would mind a view like Dragonage either.
